Things that are good at Sam Smith’s pubs - architecture

Things that are not good at Sam Smith’s pubs - beer, food

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Thursday, 9 May 2019 10:50 (six months ago) link

Unexpected nostalgia-suffused benefit of this venue: Ed complaining about Sam Smiths, even from halfway round the world. Sad you couldn't fit in an old socks reference, Ed.

I’m here early

El Tomboto, Thursday, 9 May 2019 17:04 (six months ago) link

Me too! I am sitting at the dual level table in view of the door. Am earing a green jumper and grey jeans.

Grandpont Genie, Thursday, 9 May 2019 17:07 (six months ago) link

Grandpont Genie, Thursday, 9 May 2019 17:09 (six months ago) link

Read that as 'eating' - worse ways to stand out at a FAP, I suppose.

Andrew Farrell, Thursday, 9 May 2019 17:46 (six months ago) link

We’re at the front by the door, for those joining

El Tomboto, Thursday, 9 May 2019 17:50 (six months ago) link

So great to see everyone again! Fueled in my case by Sam Smiths Extra Stout -- which is excellent, and any antipodean opinions on the topic are henceforth declared redundant -- a lot of ground was covered, including self-publishing, printing sets, neighbours, freelancing, typesetting, typefaces, journals, journalism, prog rock, Factory Records, podcasts, weddings, Bill Heine his shark and his cinemas, gullible housemates, Boston, Washington, Hackney, the military, the Tower of London, fishmongers, absent friends, internet factions, past FAPs, ILX history, football clubs and their ownership, cider (with or without sherry)...and...pause for breath, they were just the things I remember / heard.

Is there a name for the table on a table thing in the Blue Posts? You know, the little round table that's on a round table? Tiered table, if you will.

But anyway, where was Lou15 Jagg3r?

Grandpont Genie, Friday, 10 May 2019 12:53 (six months ago) link

delighted to say they are called TIERED POSEUR TABLES

mark s, Friday, 10 May 2019 13:07 (six months ago) link

and it was v nice to see all the tiered poseurs and and talk abt all these things :)

mark s, Friday, 10 May 2019 13:15 (six months ago) link

We also decided Portillo was good ;-)

xyzzzz__, Friday, 10 May 2019 13:19 (six months ago) link

and Danny Baker was bad!

Grandpont Genie, Friday, 10 May 2019 13:21 (six months ago) link

tbf "we" decided neither of those things

the first was unexpectedly announced as the CURRENT TANKIE LINE and the second was the mass judgment of twitter, raw but true

mark s, Friday, 10 May 2019 13:24 (six months ago) link

What is this "tankie" you speak of I don't understand

xyzzzz__, Friday, 10 May 2019 14:05 (six months ago) link

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 22 June 2019 07:32 (four months ago) link

Pretty certain the first Friday is the 16th, not either of the previous two when I'm across the Atlantic.

Andrew Farrell, Saturday, 22 June 2019 12:47 (four months ago) link

August is a bit of a mission, why don’t yall come to Cambridge

shhh / let peaceful like things (wins), Saturday, 22 June 2019 12:57 (four months ago) link

godfellaz (darraghmac), Saturday, 22 June 2019 15:39 (four months ago) link

Hull's lovely any time of year, just sayin

Rory end to the lowenbrow (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 22 June 2019 15:40 (four months ago) link

i preferred Cambridge when it used to produce lots of commie spies in the 20's/30's. its alumni have been a right load of punts since then :P

calzino, Saturday, 22 June 2019 15:44 (four months ago) link

I’m not an alumnus of anywhere, just a lazy East Anglian

shhh / let peaceful like things (wins), Saturday, 22 June 2019 16:16 (four months ago) link

It wasn't a swipe at thee!

calzino, Saturday, 22 June 2019 16:22 (four months ago) link

Didn’t think it was! Just giving my blessing to Cambridge-bash without feeling the need for jk emojis 😉

calzino, Saturday, 22 June 2019 16:34 (four months ago) link

tbf i mostly agree

imago, Saturday, 22 June 2019 16:39 (four months ago) link

two weeks pass...

Hello hello I am here to organize the damn thing.

A smol bird with a brogue told me the visitors will be staying near canary wharf. I don’t know that this matters in terms of where we meet but maybe it does?

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Tuesday, 9 July 2019 20:54 (four months ago) link

Ian McKellen owns a cool pub between there and Wapping. Right on the river.

suzy, Tuesday, 9 July 2019 21:08 (four months ago) link

I love The Grapes but it's pretty small...

Matt DC, Tuesday, 9 July 2019 21:23 (four months ago) link

smol (avg height, chubby tbh) bird (more hamster with a glare tbh) with a brogue (only when excited but even then its prob more of a squall) was on to enbb since to suggest that soho-ish might work as we're lunchin around there and moochin afterwards and we might as well be earlyish starting given a long day might mean bed calls us sooner than eg fizzles might have made you to expect

phil neville jacket (darraghmac), Tuesday, 9 July 2019 22:22 (four months ago) link

How much time do you want to spend mooching around Soho? If you're lunching late (or shopping) it should be fine but otherwise that's a lot of time in a relatively small area.

London will have emptied out a bit by then but even then Soho on a Friday can be on the hectic side. There's always hardy ILX perennials the Glasshouse Stores or the Blue Posts Newman Street but only if neither of you particularly mind about drinking decent beer and certainly not if you're drinking wine.

More generally anywhere reasonably central on the Jubilee Line should be pretty easy for you.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 10 July 2019 08:04 (four months ago) link

Bit late to the party here. When is this happening? Remote chance I might be able to make it

frame casual (dog latin), Wednesday, 10 July 2019 08:12 (four months ago) link

happy to hear what would work best, i mean we're going to get home easily enough id have thought

xp my wife is going to a fap, dl

phil neville jacket (darraghmac), Wednesday, 10 July 2019 08:13 (four months ago) link

when’s this happening again. i need to ringfence some time before and after.

Fizzles, Friday, 12 July 2019 18:23 (four months ago) link

fri 2nd august if the 2nd august is a fri

destination open for ideas tbh

phil neville jacket (darraghmac), Friday, 12 July 2019 18:48 (four months ago) link

First Friday after payday is usually a session in my work, so apologies in advance if I turn up at 10.30 pished.

Orpheus Knutt (Tom D.), Friday, 12 July 2019 18:54 (four months ago) link

There may be a huge schedule conflict as an OG ILXOR is leaving his job after 20+ years and that’s the night of the leaving do.

suzy, Friday, 12 July 2019 20:46 (four months ago) link

phil neville jacket (darraghmac), Friday, 12 July 2019 21:13 (four months ago) link

Yes, I am leaving my work after 21 years on the 2nd August. Leaving drinks in SOAS Bar (last official night I am a licensee there) - I'd happily extend the invite to FAPpers - though I'd understand it if would feel weird.

Pete, Saturday, 13 July 2019 10:07 (four months ago) link

let's cross the streams!

(in order to be convenient for me)

mark s, Saturday, 13 July 2019 10:15 (four months ago) link

Ah darn it. Between working from home that day and a 7:30am train Saturday I don’t think I can make it.

Michael Jones, Saturday, 13 July 2019 10:30 (four months ago) link

So it's FAP 2nd August?

It's been so long, I wouldn't mind making it Glasshouse Stores for old times' sake.

the pinefox, Saturday, 13 July 2019 11:16 (four months ago) link

double FAP and no backsies*

*where backsies = traipsing from one venue to another

mark s, Saturday, 13 July 2019 11:19 (four months ago) link

delighted to say i'm free for this, and will be coming off the back of a substantial do the night before so will be hungover and ready for more. (cut to wan figure in corner sipping elderflower cordial)

Fizzles, Saturday, 13 July 2019 11:28 (four months ago) link

you couldn't be wan if you tried! the halest of fellows

imago, Saturday, 13 July 2019 11:35 (four months ago) link

I might suggest doing this in Bloomsbury instead of Soho - close enough for Mr and Mrs Deems but also helpful for people who want to attend both events.

The pubs will be less mental as well, especially out of term time.
