and i just have to disagree with the reddit post about emilia clarke being a good actress in that final scene. i mean, if she can't pull off an angry face when her best friend in the show gets ruthlessly murdered for no reason...

i should go on their thread and let them know what i think. i mean, people on game of thrones messageboard threads love when people argue that the actors in the show are bad, right?!?

i think any other explanation other than "they're half-assing it" is too generous with this season

They are, but I think filming in Dubrovnik had become unmanageable, partly because of all the tourists who now flood Dubrovnik because of Game of Thrones.

trishyb, Wednesday, 8 May 2019 15:49 (four years ago) link

they shoulda started a GOT tourist exchange program where they served as background players

i thought daenarys looked great in that final scene - mostly her outfit and hair. she seemed v imperial looking almost like a character out of legends of the galactic heroes.

Mordy, Wednesday, 8 May 2019 15:57 (four years ago) link

have we discussed how Jon was a shitty dog parent in the last episode?

sarahell, Wednesday, 8 May 2019 15:58 (four years ago) link

nope, but otm. daenarys also loves to send her children into dangerous situations, but there's probably a lot of peer pressure for her to do so

Clarke looks the part (maybe a little too diminutive) which is most of what's required but I've never felt she was terrible. Her callowness, whether intended or not, fits with my idea of the character.

ryan, Wednesday, 8 May 2019 16:00 (four years ago) link

they've claimed they had to save on CGI so they couldn't have Jon pet the wolf. which....I have questions. xp

She works in this sense, I just never bought her being an inspirational figure to basically everyone she meets.

Simon H., Wednesday, 8 May 2019 16:02 (four years ago) link

It's because she's hot.

ryan, Wednesday, 8 May 2019 16:04 (four years ago) link

a man petting a wolf doesn't look like a man petting a wolf on camera

FernandoHierro, Wednesday, 8 May 2019 16:04 (four years ago) link

i mean, after all Ghost has done for Jon ... just ditching him like that? Ice cold.

sarahell, Wednesday, 8 May 2019 16:05 (four years ago) link

1. There are a ton of ways to fake that with practical effects!
2. Was there really not room in the FX budget for one damn pet?

Simon H., Wednesday, 8 May 2019 16:06 (four years ago) link

pretty much everyone who currently has claim to the Iron Throne rn is dumb and doesn't deserve to rule. but maybe that's the point. the people that rule will always be horrible.

sarahell, Wednesday, 8 May 2019 16:08 (four years ago) link

in summary, in a just world -- Sansa & Ghost for rulers of Westeros

sarahell, Wednesday, 8 May 2019 16:10 (four years ago) link

my suspicion, though only time will tell if this is the case, is that the series will end with a few loose ends still left open to help tease out the 3(!) spinoffs they're developing. (sigh)

LOL, even the director was just quoted citing CGI challenges for not having the giant dog in the show and this episode more. And this in a show where people fly fighting dragons.

It's the most popular show in the world why can't they afford a wolf

I think a lot of people are going to just check out of this if we put in too many fantasy elements, like a big dog

Half the time Clarke just seems like she's surprised. Most of her acting has been opening her eyes has wide as possible. It just does not work.

there's a reason why more people have been concerned about a starbucks cup than one of the dragons dying

One thing I don't understand is the power of the Iron Throne/King's Landing. Like if Daenerys has power over Dorne, the North, The Stormlands, Riverrun, the Reach and the Vale, as the show seems to suggest, who gives a shit about the Iron Throne? She has actual power over 80% of the continent. Is it all for nought because she doesn't sit on a miserable chair? I don't get it.

Van Horn Street, Wednesday, 8 May 2019 20:28 (four years ago) link

a show just isnt a show without an egg mcguffin

i think it's just that people with power like to pass their power on to people they trust, after they die, and it's easier to pass that power on to someone who has a claim to be heir to the throne

Is the dragon an heir to the throne?

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 8 May 2019 20:51 (four years ago) link

at least, that was the reasoning of charlemagne during the famous "why are you so obsessed with being the king?" debate of 792

She can pass the power to whoever she wants, just why does it need to be on the Iron Throne?

She should have Gendry forge her a new Iron Throne and just sit on it outside Kings Landing

underrated moment: two minutes of screen time being dedicated to a scene right out of the ending of a mediocre romantic comedy, that OMG KNOCKED UP realization for Jon Snow when he hugged Gilly

omar little, Wednesday, 8 May 2019 21:19 (four years ago) link

King's Landing is placed really strategically, right in the middle of everything, so it's hard to leave alone. If you don't have the Iron Islands, it's not really that big of a problem. But King's Landing, you need that.

Anyways, that's how it used to be, until time and space stopped making sense around season six.

Frederik B, Wednesday, 8 May 2019 21:52 (four years ago) link

I think you can leave King's Landing alone if you want to, it is a matter of perspective.
