they do full actual songs you can dance to and have a strong image. that qualifies as pop to me.

i mean they're obv intentionally straddling that middle ground between pop/charts and club credibility, of which there's been a great lineage imo (not so much in the US).

the complaints about the sexism/homophobia on this thread are otm

almost everyone whose talked about teh homos on this thread (along with a good number of ILM's most vocal Gaga-haters) are gay

I just checked out the video for You Belong by Hercules and Love Affair and it is a shame that they did not have the kind of commercial success that Lady Gaga is having. Obviously they are being marketed differently and are aiming at different audiences but Hercules embodies much of the same content as is just some much more interesting and well executed.

I'd like to see something as blatantly commercial as LG but with deeper references. It would be cool to see those codes cross over into the mainstream.

dont see how these artists are similar at all

& im not really a h&la stan or anything either ... shes a lot closer to ed banger MAYBE bcuz of the kinda trash aesthetic going on, but H&LA are trying so much harder to be tasteful ...

autogucci cru (deej), Friday, 12 June 2009 04:11 (fourteen years ago) link

She's closer to (current) Kylie Minogue than either I think. I could totally imagine GaGa coming out with "Speakerphone" or "Red Blooded Woman".

Kylie's visual aesthetic is very similar actually, minus the elaborate artworld justifications.

she has street cred to put it one way, as opposed to brit or xtina

How can she? No performer who has reached the mainstream can have street cred. When you get to the mainstream, that's when you lose all
credibility.

i don't even know what to make of this thread. but i'll offer up this:

i work with a hipster girl. she's like a cartoon character of what you'd think a hipster would be like & today she was talking about a guy she's into when she uttered the following sentence, "He doesn't listen to radio stuff like Britney & Lady Gaga, so that's a plus."

If you're over 17 and care about "street cred" -- especially to the point of using it as criteria for whether or not you'll allow to like certain things -- that is just sad.

Particularly if that "thing" is a person, i agree. This girl is 25 & has a child, btw. Her #1 reason for liking the guy is that he likes Ghostland Observatory.

It is really messed up that she would like this band if she is a mother of a child. They look like total chesters.

lady gaga gets a free pass from hipsters and britney spears doesn't because "poker face" and "just dance" are much much better songs (and better suited for the dancefloor, which is key) than fucking "hit me baby one more time" which is music for ten-year-olds.

plus, lady gaga sings about fucking all the time!! (even if she's really really ugly in real life)

She's awesome. She's a perpendicular force to most musicians, where the music is the art and the personal appearance is inconsequential. With her, the music is just a footnote on her interviews, her outfits, everything else. I'd never go to see her perform but I'd buy an US Magazine if they were interviewing her.

She's just grabbing the Bowie Androgynous pop star template and taking it to its logical extreme.

He must be mad jealous.

From now on I'm removing passes from any pop sensation that isn't born with both male & female genital organs.

Pop Music is the third sex.
