I kind of felt for the other candidates that lost and were so overshadowed by Ocasio Cortez but it's just not the way the story turned out.

fun fact: filmmakers aren’t objective, nor should they try to be

Did the filmmakers just document those four candidates or did they follow a larger number and then trim in post? I love all four of them, and I'm psyched all four are running again.

Wait, Amy Vilela hasn't announced her plans yet, but the other three appear to be running again in 2020.

We chose to go on the climate offense with the #GreenNewDeal.

As a result, climate denial is now a losing position + we got GOP (incl #WheresMitch!) to finally admit that climate change is real + man-made.

Now it’s time to go after predatory lending.

Whose side is the GOP on? https://t.co/1nI4UQnEVB

this is what you do when you're organizing though, you trumpet each victory and you keep up the offensive on the boss.

nothing wrong with trumpeting victories, i'm just saying

as in, that didn't happen

or, to the extent that it did happen, it's victory of the pyrrhic style - maybe there's a handful of conservatives willing to admit, under scrutiny, that climate change is real and driven by GHG emissions from humans, but forgive me for my disbelief that they're going to do jack shit about it in the future

Karl yes but the idea here is that by saying it, you MAKE it happen - now the ball's in their court. whether that does anything, who knows, but it's worth staking out the claim pre-emptively imo

Sometimes mischaracterizing your opponent's position is winning politics. God knows the GOP use this as their comprehensive approach to every position that doesn't follow their party line.

it's not even prevaricating, it's rhetoric imho - - - - if you're on the listserv of any campaign fighting anything it's full of stuff like this. it's how you make people feel like they're on the side that's going to win BUT that the other side are still being actively villainous and fighting tooth and nail to try and stop it, so they can't be complacent.

When truth is a rhetorical option, we all lose.

This was one of Socrates' main talking points. But the truth is (see what I did there?) that the option of lying outright, or shading the truth to whatever fine degree is in your linguistic power, is an option quickly discovered by every child capable of assembling a complete sentence. It was never possible to make truth mandatory.

A is for (Aimless), Friday, 10 May 2019 23:06 (four years ago) link

well that said, rhetoric and slogans are things the republicans are really good at, e.g. their recent arguments about abortion, we really need to start adopting their strategies and changing the conversation

two weeks pass...

BREAKING: Ted Cruz has had sex at least 16 times

On Wednesday, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) proposed a new bipartisan bill to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY): Make birth control available over the counter.

When Ocasio-Cortez tweeted “Birth control should be over-the-counter, pass it on,” the GOP senator responded with “I agree.”

“Perhaps, in addition to the legislation we are already working on together to ban Members of Congress from becoming lobbyists, we can team up here as well,” Cruz tweeted. “A simple, clean bill making birth control available over the counter. Interested?”

Although Cruz is staunchly anti-abortion, the Republican lawmaker has expressed support for contraceptives in the past.

“Now, listen, I have been a conservative my entire life,” Cruz said during a presidential campaign stop in 2015. “I have never met anybody, any conservative, who wants to ban contraceptives. As I noted, Heidi and I, we have two little girls. I’m very glad we don’t have 17.”
