two months pass...

Junior Mance playing "My Romance"

There is a very spare bass here, played by Richard Davis, that gives it a little extra something.

great stuff! I don't think I've heard any Mance aside from his playing on Jimmy Scott's The Source, so I have a lot of catching up to do

I don’t want to get too sentimental like those other sticky valentines but he used to play every year in the River To River Festival so I would always go to see him at lunch time and he would usually end his set with “I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be Free.” His drummer Jackie Wilson always sounded particularly good on that, playing kind of a “Hey Jude” type beat.

He was such a good person too, as was everyone around him.

Aw man, this is the first I heard of his passing. He had a good long life. I was just listening to him yesterday, on a date with Wild Bill Moore.

Nice, I'm sure I read that at some point but it's good re-reading.

Well now I'm listening to Junior Mance all day. I think I initially found out about him either through following the Mickey Roker thread, or more likely because I couldn't get enough blues/gospel-tinged jazz piano a la Bobby Timmons.

Youtube algorithm got me from Junior Mance to John Wright Trio and this is really satisfying me this morning.
