I love the drivers who stop and wave me on when there's traffic coming in the opposite direction as well.

jfc this happened to me on my bike last week - obviously it's my ultimate responsibility not to cycle in to the path of oncoming traffic but please don't encourage me to.

a very close friend of mine had her life pretty much destroyed in those circumstances.

traffic is too fucking dangerous to be whimsical

deemsthelarker (darraghmac), Friday, 3 May 2019 13:08 (five years ago) link

I've said it already 1000 times about "friendly drivers", but to see someone from Chicago say this is scary.

pplains, Friday, 3 May 2019 13:12 (five years ago) link

then they get annoyed waiting for you to wait for the oncoming traffic to stop to actually get out grrrr

Trousers with fewer than seven belt loops.

WmC, Saturday, 11 May 2019 03:00 (four years ago) link

Really? I always make mine with 5 which seems to be the right support points. Not really studied it overly but it does seem to work right.
front between pocket and fly, side around where the side seams are and centre back.

Stevolende, Saturday, 11 May 2019 09:38 (four years ago) link

I’m a big fan of six loops, but it’s rare to encounter even that many. For decades I’ve semi-often had to remake the centre back loop on otherwise well-wearing five-loop jeans and trousers bcz it’s so load-bearing that it wears through.

I can’t tell if seven seems luxurious or aggressively prophylactic. Three spaced across the back, two by the fly, two perched at the front of the hips?

I prefer one loop, and my belt just hangs from my waist like a coiled bullwhip.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 11 May 2019 12:35 (four years ago) link

The car thing is otm, it’s so arrogant to think that the road rules are yours to magnanimously dispense with as a favour. Leaves everyone else uncertain as to which rules you’ll be following and which you find optional, i.e. breaks the covenant between road users.

an incoherent crustacean (MatthewK), Saturday, 11 May 2019 13:06 (four years ago) link

The covenant between road users = above all, behave predictably.

Andrew Farrell, Saturday, 11 May 2019 14:14 (four years ago) link

dummy thinks s/he is being kind to a single driver by stopping to let them in

Huh? I would literally never get out onto the main road in rush hour if someone didn't let me out (in). Am I missing something?

Ned Trifle X, Saturday, 11 May 2019 16:00 (four years ago) link

There's maybe some situations where this makes sense, like if you are trying to get out of a driveway or parking lot into a street full of busy, slow, non-stop traffic, but in general, cars on a main street should not be yielding to other cars that don't have the right of way because it is unpredictable and messes up the flow of traffic.

in heavy slow moving traffic it's an understandable courtesy, but stopping free-flowing traffic behind you in order to do this is a decent argument for capital punishment

d'ILM for Murder (Hadrian VIII), Saturday, 11 May 2019 16:17 (four years ago) link

Well ok then.

Things is, when I'm trying to get out into the rush hour traffic and THERE'S CLEARLY A QUEUE and you (not you folks obv) STILL DON'T LET ME OUT?!? And so you end up with your car stopped in front of me on the main road staring determinedly at the car in front in front hoping I'm not giving you my very hardest Paddington stare (because I am).

Ned Trifle X, Saturday, 11 May 2019 17:19 (four years ago) link

kinder, Saturday, 11 May 2019 18:12 (four years ago) link

Your side street must lead eventually to a street where there is a light or stop sign or roundabout or traffic circle that allows you to merge into traffic without relying on hope and the goodness of strangers. You might have to travel east for a block to get west, but it's gotta be there somewhere.

pplains, Saturday, 11 May 2019 18:54 (four years ago) link

I have made somewhere around 20 or 25 pairs of jeans over the last few years. & most of them have had 5 belt loops which seems to have worked well they are the trousers I wear most of the time.
I just looked at what must be a similar design to the pair that wore out and I have been using the parts of as pattern pieces for what I've made. That has the extra 2 loops on. I think I stopped doing 7 after the first few pairs because they seemed extraneous to need.
So I am surprised that somebody is emphasising that there should be 7 or more. Why do you need more? Do you find the waistband sags at points that don't have the support or something

Stevolende, Sunday, 12 May 2019 07:43 (four years ago) link

(I'm guessing the optimum number would differ according to the size of the waistline)

koogs, Sunday, 12 May 2019 07:50 (four years ago) link

Yeah. There are sags between the back loop and the side loops on my 5-loop jeans, and I recently got a pair of 7-loop jeans that look and feel much better.

Well it could be exactly like my side street which is a dead end laneway exiting onto a major road half a block from a significant intersection. I have sat through several cycles of lights before anyone queueing up in the near lane decides it's time to generously let me out.

I use the Google News applet thingy, and it thinks I'm interested in "Vanderpump Rules" which I'm only vaguely aware is a TV show, and I have clicked "fewer stories like this" at least a dozen times, but Google is not convinced.

I just got a Twitter news alert about the death of Grumpy Cat, a topic I’ve never favoured with an opinion.

suzy, Friday, 17 May 2019 10:53 (four years ago) link

Google new alerts thinks I'm interested in Lewis Capaldi (who I'd never heard of before that, then a (bad) advert came on TV for him), football (mostly Liverpool and Man U) and exam results in an Asian city I have also never heard of. I've no idea where they come up with this stuff.

Slightly more spookily it's also giving me articles about Twin Peaks which we've been re-watching lately, I assume it's getting this info from NowTV, and not just by listening in on our living room :/
