https://www.cnbc.com/2019/05/02/burger-king-takes-on-mcdonalds-with-a-range-of-unhappy-meals.html

Burger King has launched a range of burger meals that focus on “real” moods.

The fast-food chain introduced a range of boxed deals it’s calling “Real Meals,” including the Pissed Meal, Blue Meal, Salty Meal, Yaaas Meal and DGAF (Don’t Give a F---) Meal as part of Mental Health Awareness Month in May. The deal includes a Whopper sandwich, french fries and a drink.

“Burger King restaurants understands that no one is happy all the time. That’s why they’re asking guests to order a Whopper meal based on however they might be feeling,” an online release stated Wednesday.

Nice thing about a pull tab aluminum can as the anti-snobbism vehicle, compared to a screw-top bottle or box wine, is that you can't reseal it. It's 12 fl. oz. down the hatch every time.

“I haven’t seen anything quite like this, but I like what he’s doing,” said Robert Carter, an industry adviser for the food-service sector with The NPD Group. The “entergagement” strategy, Mr. Carter said, could help GarfieldEATS avoid the sluggish 1-to-2-per-cent annual growth of the traditional restaurant industry in Canada, and play in the much more competitive digital-delivery marketplace, which he said has more than 20-per-cent annual growth. “The battle is: How do you get consumers more engaged?” Mr. Carter said. “This is pretty playful.”

When I was younger, I used to do taste tests for Ruby Tuesday. You would basically get a free lunch (testing the food), then get a $50 gift card to boot. Sadly, I never got to taste any truly innovative food laboratory inventions though.

https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20190610005219/en/KRISPY-KREME%C2%AE-Opening-Times-Square-Flagship-2020

Krispy Kreme announced today that it will open the first-of-its-kind flagship in Times Square, delighting New Yorkers and tourists alike with the most awesome doughnut experience imaginable. Opening in early 2020, the shop will serve more guests annually than any other Krispy Kreme location in the world.

Within the shop’s 4,500-square-foot retail space, Krispy Kreme will bring its iconic doughnut theater experience to life on the world stage. From the mixing of raw ingredients to the iconic glaze waterfall, Krispy Kreme Times Square Flagship will showcase the end-to-end doughnut making process, creating a wondrously delightful customer experience that is surpassed only by the first bite of Krispy Kreme’s melt-in-your-mouth Original Glazed® Doughnuts just minutes later. And guests can take that first bite while sitting in the world’s largest Krispy Kreme doughnut box with stadium-style seating, offering the perfect view of the doughnut theater across the shop.

More stoner "Let's add Froot Loops to Nestle Quik" cuisine. I'm certain they'll be selling Doritos-powdered doughnuts by 2020.

xxp are family donut stores in CA somehow different from those elsewhere in the country?

d'ILM for Murder (Hadrian VIII), Tuesday, 11 June 2019 13:22 (four years ago) link

i can't really answer that because all of the other places i've lived have been donut monocultures (Dunkin or Krispy). in California they tend to be run by immigrant families (often Cambodian, there are articles about the phenomenon if you search for Ted Ngoy + donuts) and their menus, while all more or less the same, are generally far more diverse and tasty than corporate places.

blood, loud screaming and nudity (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Tuesday, 11 June 2019 14:45 (four years ago) link

Interesting. The prevalence of Cambodian shops may be unique to CA but certainly in the mid-Atlantic and New England there are tons of great small donut shops amid the ubiquitous Dunkin'

Not chain restaurant oriented, but Laura Shapiro's book Something From The Oven may be interesting to thread-readers - a history of the development and especially the marketing and adoption of postwar frozen/powdered/otherwise "convenience" foods.
