Yeah, I see a lot of peen in sweatpants. I don't think guys understand support undergarments in certain situations.

And as google tells me, this is indeed a thing, a challenge, a hashtag. The sweatpantsbulge.
― Yerac, Wednesday, 1 May 2019 16:31 (nine months ago) link
The kinds of supporting boxer briefs that are best for working out imo only accentuate the bulge.

Yeah when enbb mentioned it above I was thinking of all the loose dicks I see flapping about in sweatpants but the pics online I see it's a different arrangement.
― Yerac, Wednesday, 1 May 2019 16:34 (nine months ago) link
Sweats are comfortable.
I mainly wear jeans but I like those trousers that are essentially slacks and don't have the cuff at the end but still have a drawstring or elastic waist. Seems a good innovation, not least since it's unusual for the waist of the trouser to be visible anyway.

My bf keeps threatening to find us matching Sergio Tacchini warm ups so we look like Russian mobsters apparently. Looking at their website now--I don't hate them, I can say that much.

sweatpants are at least upfront about the level of effort the wearer is putting in. i’ll take that over the countless number of cheap-looking jeans and khakis that fit horribly and are three inches too long.

nice. i bought a black, teal, and purple one for a party but haven't worn it since. probably should take it to a thrift store so the cycle can start again.

sweats are only ever appropriate in public either going to or from the gym imo
I hate how all sweats seem to be that jogger shape now.
same. i had to scour ebay for a pre-jogger pair of nike sweatpants to replace the ones that were dying

I had this cheapo black hanes t-shirt where I had spilled bleach right about in the spot where a t-shirt pocket would go, and it made a somewhat cool-looking, orange-whiteish splotch, so I used to wear it out -- people sometimes asked me if it was a designer t-shirt.
― longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Monday, 10 June 2019 15:59 (eight months ago) link
I've thought about getting some more of those and just experimenting with bleach spills.
i'm giving thought to a tote/backpack cross because i have become a scooter wanker in los angeles, and scooting while carrying a toat a tote is suicidal.

i like peter and ian's looks in joy division, but it turns out every single picture of joy division is black and white: https://i.imgur.com/eECkPt8.jpg
can some britishers suggest some shirt and pant color combos that some blokes might've worn around that time?
― diamonddave85 (diamonddave85), Friday, 26 July 2019 17:41 (six months ago) link
there are some colour photographs, though they are in the minority. generally seems to be quite muted colors:
the big coats are grey or navy, grey, navy or black pants. black dress shoes.shirts are bit more varied, there's pictures of ian curtis in red, orange, and yellow shirts. as well as pale blue and olive and white. don't think I've ever seen hooky in anything that colorful in joy division days (maybe pale blue shirt on the more colorful side)

oh yeah maybe olive pants as well. bit of military look sometimes, especially ian

I'm completely stuck at the moment. beginning to hit middle age, boring professional etc, so past the place where i can carry off yoof, and really dislike standard english standard male wear. need to spend at a price point below a lot of the 'well-dressed man', and also I find them tending either to dullness, pomposity or that fuckin sprezzatura world.
the items i've bought from old town i like both in terms of quality and look, but i don't always want to look like i'm tending a fishing smack off the Suffolk coast in the '40s.
i *need* instagram accounts for some *looks*, some online recommendations and for any of you london based, shopping recommendations. feel since LG left and woof posts less frequently i've lost bearings a bit.

not at all averse to buying from abroad either tbh, and i've looked somewhat longingly at some japanese stores, though the fucking state of the pound at the moment makes buying hessian sack a mortgageable enterprise.
― Fizzles, Thursday, 22 August 2019 07:03 (six months ago) link
I'm maybe a little stuck myself atm. I realised I have had exactly 2 looks for the last 30 years - look 1: academic manqué; look 2: 1989 Mudhoney audience member. I just bounce between them, creating an ever more expensive version of each as my income rises.
But yes the state of the pound makes me very very angsty about buying from overseas, which is unfortunate because the two things I am enjoying at the moment are m2m shirts from Proper Cloth (ie look 1 - got a lovely Madras and a v simple blue Oxford from them) and Japanese heavy flannel (ie look 2 - ordered this direct from UES).
― woof, Thursday, 22 August 2019 08:22 (six months ago) link
fwiw I think proper cloth still works out pretty well, given the range of shirtings, degree of customisation, and control over fit. But it's def best-shirts rather than everyday-shirts.
― woof, Thursday, 22 August 2019 08:25 (six months ago) link
waiting for the day when professional media workwear forms a perfect ven with 1989 Mudhoney-just-behind-the-moshpit fan. Basically i need to up my 'best shirts' quotient a bit so the Proper Cloth option is good. AndI need a bit of non-shirt top options, including jumper options, tho i think that's easier. Mind you, terrible state of crewnecks and indeed v-necks in the world sometimes, sloppy necks or blousy hang.
going to go back to japanese websites for other top options, and stop looking at coats are basically a $1000 *look* for red letter days, and not sustainable daily wear.
― Fizzles, Thursday, 22 August 2019 10:48 (six months ago) link
Spaces I think about moving into:
* Agèd semi-mod who only buys from American Classics and John Simons and stands in the shop chatting all day. Large cap. * Drunk in a suit with no tie, in a suit all the time even though it's not right for his work or social situations. Thinks he's in the Bad Seeds, actually just sweaty and awkward. Feel like this is basically an alcoholic look, and sadly I've got my drinking under control. * Something austere and Japanese. Don't really have the vocab to capture this.

I'm older and into minimal, slightly technical stuff made by Outlier, Mission Workshop, occasionally Uniqlo, the Sea to Sky collection released a few years ago from Reigning Champ. I'm not talking Neuromancer-wannabe stuff or anything. I just don't like branding and I like a little function along with form. Solid colors, usually shades of gray, black, and muted colors. Anybody else into this stuff and have any suggestions? I'm specifically looking for a new jacket appropriate for like 30-40 F and button-up shirts that have a boxy or even slightly flared out fit (like a Japanese work shirt) but not big tents meant to hide bellies.

No, and it's kind of funny to reread that post as it sort of makes it seem like I spend a lot of time and money shopping for clothes which I don't. I own a few Outlier pieces, but all of those other places I'm judging by staring at their sites and closing them without buying anything. I recently had to throw out some shirts that had developed huge holes in the backs (probably a result of wearing a backpack every day) too big to ignore, and now I am sort of desperate to find some affordable plain and muted shirts that don't get all stretched out at the bottom because I have weirdly wide hips. I'm thinking about just sizing up a few Taylor Stitch shirts and maybe having them tailored so they don't look all poofy. I still haven't found a jacket, either.
I really like Engineered Garments and I even have some immaculate flannels that I bought a few years ago for a low price, but I just don't know how to wear the stuff without feeling like I look like a total doof.
― beard papa, Thursday, 3 October 2019 16:15 (four months ago) link
I strongly relate to guys' struggles on here.
I'm 44 and have been working 100% from home for several years, which means I have zero use for any of the dressy clothes I have, many of which are falling apart or don't fit anyway. But that's left me wearing t-shirts and jeans pretty much every day, and I'm getting real bored with it. It would be nice to find some casual clothes, especially shirts, that are slightly more stylish, but I find most men's fashions to be painfully drab and dull. I'd like something with a bit of color that looks more modern than classic.

Can anyone recommend business casual (button/oxford) shirts that aren't non-iron but also don't need a ton of ironing? I feel like most non-iron shirts look a little bit cheap or goofy, but the regular dress shirts I've bought lately all look wrinkled after an hour of wear and/or are really hard to iron.
