afaict the trump 2020 plan is to bet even more on facebook ads targetting old people in swing states. it's not a terrible plan, and it doesn't need the NRA.

maybe we can blow up facebook before 2020

Rod Rosenstein resigning effective 5/11. A recent exchange I had with him:

Me: You quoted Donald Trump on respecting the rule of law. Seriously?
RR: It was a good quote.
Me: Do you think he believed it?
RR: [Pause]
Me: Do you?
RR: Those were good words.

"Both" "sides" in the NRA dispute are 100% pro-Trump, so I am not seeing how their internal turmoil could alter the electoral picture, sorry.

yeah, the good old "won't somebody think of the children" argument, always deployed in perfectly good faith

uh in this case it's children going without meals, not some bogus moralizing. what bad faith argument do you think is being advanced here exactly?

Teachers need to organize to survive, and organization involves potentially striking. This is obvious to teachers who rely on their jobs for their survival. Iā€™m fucking incredulous that anyone is taking this ā€œkids starve if teachers strikeā€ bourgeois concern trolling bullshit seriously. How many levels of false consciousness are you dorks on

Dan I., Tuesday, 30 April 2019 00:11 (four years ago) link

ftr, there are millions of children eating both free breakfast and free lunch at public schools these days, because there are millions of children living in households below the poverty level.

A is for (Aimless), Tuesday, 30 April 2019 00:33 (four years ago) link

Thatā€™s true, and as mentioned upthread one of the things that teachers unions work to preserve

Dan I., Tuesday, 30 April 2019 00:38 (four years ago) link

The Baylor University women's basketball team were apparently dragged to the White House today...they look super excited in this photo.

haha!

Dan S, Tuesday, 30 April 2019 01:47 (four years ago) link

mainly i'm mad because dan is personally attacking me and mischaracterizing me.

but also we differ on our understanding of what it is to meaningfully support union action

mine has to do w. practical concerns as i am actively involved in teacher union organization

his has to do w/ unrestricted dunking rights on james comey on twitter

the late great, Tuesday, 30 April 2019 01:47 (four years ago) link

sheesh is that really what started this. I think i tuned in to the conversation halfway.

Dan I., Tuesday, 30 April 2019 01:49 (four years ago) link

don't give a shit about comey

dude, ILX no longer has 51 users

l;ucky for you

the late great, Tuesday, 30 April 2019 01:52 (four years ago) link

iā€™m fucking incredulous that you donā€™t even know why youā€™re giving me a hard time

the late great, Tuesday, 30 April 2019 01:53 (four years ago) link

iā€™m arguing in favor of oneā€™s right to be a scab and for the necessity of scabs

Dan I., Tuesday, 30 April 2019 01:54 (four years ago) link

ilx still has mods and they still have discretionary powers. you may not be able to rely on the difficulty of getting 51'ed when you shit on other ilxors' heads. just sayin'.

A is for (Aimless), Tuesday, 30 April 2019 01:55 (four years ago) link

do mods love scabs too?

Dan I., Tuesday, 30 April 2019 01:56 (four years ago) link

oh did that trigger you? what union are you in?

the late great, Tuesday, 30 April 2019 01:57 (four years ago) link

arguments like this are really disturbing

Dan S, Tuesday, 30 April 2019 01:59 (four years ago) link

scabs are not necessary in every field, of course. i was speaking only about substitutes crossing picket lines.

the late great, Tuesday, 30 April 2019 02:00 (four years ago) link

It did kinda trigger me! It's a shocking thing to say!

Dan I., Tuesday, 30 April 2019 02:00 (four years ago) link

if youā€™re a low skilled worker, like a fast food worker or a food processor, then yes i donā€™t think ppl should cross yr picket line.

teachers rely on relationships built over time, so our union is somewhat insulated against the effect of substitutes. as i said, theyā€™re not really effective replacements.

the late great, Tuesday, 30 April 2019 02:02 (four years ago) link

I'm trying to understand your perspective. Do other members of your union think that scabbing is good? Would you say the things you've said in this thread out loud at a union meeting?

Dan I., Tuesday, 30 April 2019 02:03 (four years ago) link

dan i, please shut the fuck up you sanctimonious butthole

i live in a state where i can be fired and lose my teaching certificate if i try to strike tho so maybe im not really in a union!!!!!

be the 2 chainz you want 2 see in the world (m bison), Tuesday, 30 April 2019 02:05 (four years ago) link

i said a lot more union skeptical things than that at our initial meetings like ā€œdo we even need a union right nowā€ and you know what? in the end i still voted for the union

and when we discuss labor actions i speak for moderation and responsible use of power. and sometimes the vote doesnā€™t go my way! and when that happens i do what the union says. because iā€™m a union member: thatā€™s my perspective

the late great, Tuesday, 30 April 2019 02:07 (four years ago) link

jesus, thank you for a straight answer.

Dan I., Tuesday, 30 April 2019 02:09 (four years ago) link
