The new Abdu Ali album Fiyah!!! i incorporates Baltimore club music and more. Sarah M Hughes does free jazz solos on a few cuts on it. I like it

Ali was included in a NY Times magazine article on Baltimore arts.

curmudgeon, Sunday, 28 April 2019 19:37 (four years ago) link

There's an awkwardly phrased at times, rave review of Abdu Ali in Quietus as well, but barely any ilm/ilx mentions (I also mentioned this on a rolling Baltimore club thread that has been barely utilized in years)

This Svbkvlt (Shanghai) compilation has lots of wild tracks:

Heard the Swimful track on this Air Max '97 mix and had to get the ID (one of mine in there too)

Thoughts on new LOFT ep? Still digesting

Was also gonna rec new Batu, highly, but is that just ... modern bass? Is the reconstructed sound secretly just post-bass mixed with some 4th world elements and neo-idm?

Vapor waif (uptown churl), Wednesday, 5 June 2019 16:50 (four years ago) link

I like the Batu, and this one on Timedance sounds very promising:
https://metristlsae.bandcamp.com/album/pollen-pt-1

And yeah, I think that's all true, and I'm not too bothered about what it's called in 2019. For me it basically encompasses dance music outside of techno & house, although there's a tension between the hyper-specific regional scenes that end up influencing and getting embraced by (sometimes subsumed into) the larger dispersed thing.

Thoughts on new LOFT ep? Still digesting

Into it, love 'That Hyde Trakk', but I think her best is still to come (though the first EP is a classic for me).

Speaking of, here's the collab from the new Air Max '97 EP:

I think it more likely falls under deconstructed than reconstructed, but I've been enjoying the Amnesia Scanner/Bill Kouligas collaboration, Lexachest.

I gather it's the audio portion of a live a/v show they've done previously and would love to see that live, but the audio's pretty good on its own

mh, Wednesday, 5 June 2019 19:29 (four years ago) link

Will check ... agree that LOFT seems to be building towards something potentially game changing but is still in process

Yeah not bothered by taxonomies; I feel like there is/was also a sort of post-arca / post-trap angle too with artists like dasychira who released a cool Ep last year.

Also last year but not in the thread is ZULI whose “terminals” album was one of my favorites.

MSYLMA from this year on halcyon veil is produced by him, not “club” tho but amazing

glad you like that ulysses - i think new EP is his strongest but he also releases a ton of similar stuff on his timedance label ... started getting heavily into this stuff, what i will perhaps inaccurately call the 'bristol sound' over the past couple years. livity sound and widsom teeth are good labels to check

in fact i was coming here to post something off wisdom teeth --https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dTdoBtMea2o

untuned mass damper (mh), Monday, 19 August 2019 00:49 (four years ago) link

I love the new Blanck Mass album. I'm kind of surprised he doesn't have a dedicated thread by now. "No Dice" is the standout for me. It's catchy and so stylistically audacious. Makes me smile every time I hear it. I'll admit to experiencing a bit of fatigue when listening all the way through on headphones - which was the case with World Eater, too, but he's just cornered the market on whatever genre this is. When I play something new in the house, my wife likes to try to guess when it was made and she was completely stumped by this album.

beard papa, Wednesday, 21 August 2019 19:49 (four years ago) link

there's a fuck buttons thread i think. This is a very 'tarot sports' album imo, which - if i wasn't clear before - means i like it a lot.

I like those tracks but feel conflicted about the project of making dance music in 7/8. It would be cool to blend with 4/4 though!

The DJ Haram RA mix rips, and I'm not just saying that because I have a track in it (!).

pomenitul, Thursday, 14 November 2019 09:32 (four years ago) link

caught siete catorce and debit a few weeks back in nyc; they slayed, room didnt quite do it justice but imo relatively slower industrial guachero goes a lot harder than cheesy 160bpm ebm stuff. we need more triplets in the club

on that note completely non-club oriented topdown dialetic releases are giving me life as winter descends, dubby basic channel / porter ricks vibes but much more detailed and spontaneous in a way; pseudo-diegetic club ambient

Anyway, since this guy somehow released 9 albums of material this year (the albums are pretty much all under 40 min, but still), I've attempted a best-of and I'm just gonna put the playlist here in case anyone is interested:
