the good news is that since 'red' her lead singles have pretty much uniformly been some of the worst songs on her albums

J0rdan S., Friday, 26 April 2019 04:41 (five years ago) link

or beginning with 'red' i should say

J0rdan S., Friday, 26 April 2019 04:41 (five years ago) link

otm i liked LWYMMD, this is stunningly sterile millennial whoop shit

flappy bird, Friday, 26 April 2019 04:47 (five years ago) link

"Spelling is fun" and you "can't spell awesome without me" is abominable, condescending. Terrible choices. That said, I still kind of like this somehow and it's bound to be a huge inescapable hit in the same vein as Can't Stop The Feeling. Fun and lighthearted works better for her than the dark me vs. the world Taylor.

The overall immediate reaction seems pretty mixed to negative, though. One of the surprising things to me about the initial reaction to this is how much people seemingly ended up coming around on reputation.

triggercut, Friday, 26 April 2019 04:49 (five years ago) link

I never came around on Reputation -- save a few cuts -- and this song feels even more forced.

um

you can't spell awesome without ME

maybe i’ll just skip this one

american bradass (BradNelson), Friday, 26 April 2019 10:43 (five years ago) link

is this for a kids movie?

Yes, it's called "Summer," and it will be opening everywhere.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 26 April 2019 11:38 (five years ago) link

"hey kids! spelling is fun!" is such a bafflingly terrible moment

ufo, Friday, 26 April 2019 11:57 (five years ago) link

hoo boy this is gonna be omnipresent

american bradass (BradNelson), Friday, 26 April 2019 12:05 (five years ago) link

anyway i'm predicting the album is called chrysalis

american bradass (BradNelson), Friday, 26 April 2019 12:05 (five years ago) link

I hated We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together, Shake It Off, and Look What You Made Me Do for a long time when they first came out, so I'm going to reserve my judgement until I hear a birthday party full of 8-year-olds trying to sing along to it this summer. I don't think it's terrible, although there are some parts I don't like ("there's a lot of lame guys out there" stands out). The video (and particularly Brandon Urie's dumb face) makes me want to put my head through a wall, although the melting dress at the end is a good kind of nightmare fuel, imo.

Anyway, is someone going to make a new thread?

Oh yeah, this too.

i don't understand people who hated "we are never ever getting back together" on first blush and i never will

american bradass (BradNelson), Friday, 26 April 2019 12:10 (five years ago) link

the French at the beginning is so bad it feels like trolling

xp truth bomb

After Cease to Brexist (Noodle Vague), Friday, 26 April 2019 12:12 (five years ago) link

She has a habit of squeezing really clunky slogans into lyrics, doesn't she? Anyway, this reminds me of, like, Sara Bareilles. Harmless enough. How long until Taylor Swift is on Broadway?

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 26 April 2019 12:22 (five years ago) link

the French at the beginning is so bad it feels like trolling

Srsly, what was the point of that?

All along there is the sound of feedback (Sund4r), Friday, 26 April 2019 12:30 (five years ago) link

Maybe (plus the colors) a loose nod to Umbrellas of Cherbourg?

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 26 April 2019 12:31 (five years ago) link

New world to me, but the comparisons hold up:

Taylor Swift's new Jojo-Siwa-lite aesthetic is really depressing me. Surely she can get a #1 without luring iPad-addicted children to her content?? I just feel bad for the parents who will have to endure this song at school drop-offs and talent shows for years to come pic.twitter.com/fUa3HygiBs

Beeb says it could be a reference to 'Les Demoiselles de Rochefort', but that's stretching it imo. xp

Have you ever heard of country music? It is a style of music that Taylor Swift played prior to recording that song. ;)

☮ (peace, man), Friday, 26 April 2019 12:46 (five years ago) link

Was it like that "Old Town Road" song?

We were never Breeting Borting (President Keyes), Friday, 26 April 2019 13:08 (five years ago) link

Hot takes from my daughters, aka the target demo:

14-year old "Panic!" fan: this is OK.

11-year old theatre kid: "Is this for 2-year olds?" Shortly afterward she started singing "Fight Song," but I have heard her walking around ironically singing "you can't spell US without ME!" So: mission accomplished?

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 26 April 2019 13:11 (five years ago) link

The only thing Demy-like about this is that it's as unbearably wtf awful as his last one, the one where Yves Montand plays himself and fucks his own daughter. But I guess Brendon Urie is too young for that to be the twist.

Frederik B, Friday, 26 April 2019 13:23 (five years ago) link

Why do I already feel like I've heard this chorus a hundred times?

jmm, Friday, 26 April 2019 13:38 (five years ago) link

you can't spell empty without me

We were never Breeting Borting (President Keyes), Friday, 26 April 2019 13:46 (five years ago) link

lmao oh my god this is so embarrassing, it's literally called "ME!" and the whole song is just like "I'm NoT lIkE oThEr GiRlS", great to see she sure has matured and evolved a lot over the last decade!!!!

vision joanna newsom (Stevie D(eux)), Friday, 26 April 2019 13:46 (five years ago) link

ahah, yeah that french speaking intro is wtf !
and the whole thing is hideous in every aspects...
but I suppose her fanbase will love it since it's hooks-a-gogo.

AlXTC from Paris, Friday, 26 April 2019 13:47 (five years ago) link

her RYM fanbase is completely hating this tbh. hard to say if they feel more betrayed by her or marina

imago, Friday, 26 April 2019 13:48 (five years ago) link

lol love to see ppl desperately trying to convince themselves that this song might not be horrible

would be good for, like, the end credits of Minions movie

this was starting to grow on me on second listen except for the millennial whoop which I will always hate and is pretty much impossible to ignore here. I didn't pick up on the godawful "spelling is fun" though until I read this thread because I'm dumb and just couldn't make out what was being said, to me it sounded like "stalling is fun" which made no sense of course but I was already leaning towards just hearing it as "Stalin is fun!" but now that's ruined.

Evans on Hammond (evol j), Friday, 26 April 2019 14:00 (five years ago) link

I like the hookiness of it, which at times reaches almost K-pop'ian levels of overload, but the whole thinking is so winking, and so sour. Just make some joy and enjoy it. It's pop! It's not complicated.

Frederik B, Friday, 26 April 2019 14:01 (five years ago) link

spelling is fun vs. everybody loves counting

☮ (peace, man), Friday, 26 April 2019 14:03 (five years ago) link

It's a good thing this is just a soundtrack song from a kids movie rather than some event preceded by weeks of countdowns and murals

We were never Breeting Borting (President Keyes), Friday, 26 April 2019 14:05 (five years ago) link

i predict this will appear on "inspiring" "active" playlists for years to come

Lil' Brexit (Tracer Hand), Friday, 26 April 2019 14:13 (five years ago) link

The CGI is really amazing in this video, very pretty production values

I don't see a marked difference between this and any of her singles 1989 onward

Plinka Trinka Banga Tink (Eliza D.), Friday, 26 April 2019 14:13 (five years ago) link

like i know the lyrics say "lots of cool chicks" at the point where we see it but why tho

Plinka Trinka Banga Tink (Eliza D.), Friday, 26 April 2019 14:14 (five years ago) link

In fact, I appreciate the snare-focused production stuff, it's interesting and silly and totally OK

I'm going to my son's preschool festival tomorrow and fully expect a Kids Bop version of this to be playing there

I liked "Shake It Off," despised "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together," liked "Look What You Made Me Do," and this is... fine.

This song sounds like someone tried to do one of those ultimate-lifeform cloning experiments by cross-pollinating “Roar” and “Fight Song” and every other Lite FM inspiro-pop standard and, like, it was a success, but the result is still in that creepy early stage you see with artificial creatures in movies where it doesn’t fully understand its power yet and can’t, like, stand on its own (which I guess is analogous here to having the most basic of all chord progressions)
I’m guessing by later this month it will have escaped its lab and witnessed some example of human cruelty that turns it against us as a species, at which point, like, sorry, we’re done for

You can't see it but I had an epiphany (Champiness), Friday, 26 April 2019 14:25 (five years ago) link
