Same, also get that Toby Young posturing about Greta Thunberg’s privilege (actor dad, singer mum).

I seem to remember C Hunt being slyly accused of some Doshi was with impressionable young women. Am I wrong?

some fun shade-casting on Five Live just now, pointing out that Change are breaking the mold of UK politics by bragging about all the career pols and political journos that are signing up, then describing Esler as "not really a household name"

Tbh, always had doubts about TIGs, but understood vital need for MPs to work together to stop Brexit

But given their aggressive anti-LD plans, failure to say what they stand for & their blatant refusal to co-operate on Euro elections, time @LibDems got realistic about TIGs pic.twitter.com/UNWbsf9IEM

More on Change UK's leading Scottish candidate.

The Glasgow University website says he is a PhD candidate researching the Greenock-born German/Scottish author and anarchist John Henry Mackay, who died in 1933.

Mackay wrote a series of books in German advocating sex between men and boys called the Books of the Nameless Love, including one called The Boy-Doll.

Mr Russo’s webpage describes this as Mackay’s desire for “pederastic emancipation”.

Going well, isn't it?

Same, also get that Toby Young posturing about Greta Thunberg’s privilege (actor dad, singer mum).

What, Lord Young's boy?

Despite failing to achieve the College's BBB offer, he was given a place at Brasenose College, Oxford. Young claims he was sent an acceptance letter by mistake, as well as a letter of rejection from the admissions tutor Harry Judge: in an article he wrote for The Spectator, he stated that his father phoned Judge to clarify the situation – Judge was in a meeting with the PPE tutors at the time, and after some discussion, they decided to offer Young a place.[17] He had been given a conditional offer of three Bs plus an O Level pass in a foreign language under a scheme to give access to comprehensive pupils.

I mean, does an academic researching the work of a person constitute an endorsement of all that person's views? Not sure what kind of society we would have if we dismissed all academics, of all people, on the basis of each and every opinion, belief system, whim or manifesto of the people they choose to study.

My experience of academia is that it's fairly common for professors to shine a light on people with a complex range of views, or to become interested in specific parts of someone's work.

I suppose it is easy to pick this out when someone runs for office but it feels a bit iffy to me.

FernandoHierro, Wednesday, 24 April 2019 12:31 (five years ago) link

Fair enough, apparently racist tweets as well. He's quit, BBC says.

FernandoHierro, Wednesday, 24 April 2019 12:51 (five years ago) link

It is legit astonishing that, having quit a party supposedly because the Labour leadership couldn't adequately police the social media output of a party with half a million members (plus however many other random cocks), the CDUK party can't even adequately vet the social media profiles of, what, 50 people?

As you say he's running for office. Your communication skills have got to be really sharp to back yourself so nothing nasty sticks. Most ppl really don't have that.

70's libertarianism sent some PIEpl into some fucked up places! Harriet Harman was a notable member of a pro-paedo group iirc.

calzino, Wednesday, 24 April 2019 15:02 (five years ago) link

Yeah I really only defended him on the basis of what he might have studied as an academic. I think of my lecturers and I reckon each one of them or their work or a one-off talk they've given could be ridiculed/shamed outside the world of academia fairly easily. I've come to think of academia as sort of ideological kite flying more and more, though I do feel that can lead to sort of wooly or lackadaisical attitudes towards the actual morality of given thoughts and opinions, plus ignorance and naivety about the world outside the university.

The actual tweets are hard to defend. I guess in a small way it's a bit creepy this sort of hunt through people's tweets, and even the idea of Twitter as archive of morals, but equally I know the tweets that would end my candidacy would not include something like his 'black women scare me'.

Harriet Harman was a notable member of a pro-paedo group iirc.

Er, no, she was a member of the NCCL which PIE was affiliated too, i.e. PIE sent them a cheque which they cashed. This was a typical PIE tactic, they tried to affiliate with a variety of gay rights organisations, march at Pride, etc.

Oh yeah, there was! The NCCL definitely should have been more wary but because some of their aims overlapped (reducing the age of consent for gay sex for instance - although, er, they had different ideas about what that age should be) and because some people back in the 70s were TOTALLY mad and thought any group of "outsiders" should be protected it's not a surptise PIE tried tried to use that to their advantage. I remember seeing PIE materials in alternative bookshops in the early 80s even. Totally insane to us now obviously.

Of course why they cared what the NCCL thought when they had senior civil servants in the ranks protected by Thatch fuck knows.

i have an acquaintance who upon getting a spin doctor position with the snp was given a day off before starting to comb through all of his online activity and delete anything offending. the fact that actual elected officials so often fail to do so (including in that party) boggles the mind

findom haddie (jim in vancouver), Wednesday, 24 April 2019 16:23 (five years ago) link

About 7/8 years ago I got a job in media and my then boss, on my first day, was like "what's your Twitter handle?" - at the time Twitter was used a lot less and I (stupidly) tended to take a more lax attitude to it as far as posting on nights out etc went, versus Facebook which felt like family and stuff and a bit more safe. I had to deliberately give him the wrong handle, delete a load of tweets, and then say I only used it sporadically.

Though as it turned out he wouldn't have cared anyway, but I didn't know him v well at that point.

FernandoHierro, Wednesday, 24 April 2019 16:47 (five years ago) link

I wouldn't do that kind of thing now and was an angry young (late 30's) man at the time and pissed up. GCHQ would have me arrested + on the front cover of the Mail for the same offence these days!
