okay, now that someone's called us out for being assholes in this thread, I need to post at least fifty more times.

much more affordable than my coveted green slingbacks:

I love love those, too! Am thinking of getting them for sister's wedding cos reception & dancing are outdoors and skinny heels won't do.

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 21:17 (seventeen years ago) link

get them, Laurel! they'd be perfect for an outdoor wedding and are some of the most reasonably-priced shoes Anthropologie has ever carried, I think. what color is your dress?

horseshoe (horseshoe), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 21:19 (seventeen years ago) link

i was going to post those earlier! they're awesome!
xpost

i suppose this is what i mean about roman-inspired shoes that i like. just imagine them ON.

(who called us assholes?)

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 21:20 (seventeen years ago) link

well, I guess it's more like they called us frivolous. in the RUMPIE WORKS IN MY OFFICE thread. because, clearly, we claimed to be saving the world. that's why it's called the New Shoes thread.

horseshoe (horseshoe), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 21:23 (seventeen years ago) link

OH GAWD, Suzy, I tried to find the red patent ankle-strap pumps I linked to earlier for Ally's wedding, but the Easy Spirit stores in midtown had hardly any of the Subkoff line in stock and nothing in red. Then NO SOONER do I get back (after wearing something else entirely for the wedding) then I see one of the magazine girls in our caf wearing the very similar wedge pumps in red suede. I POUNCED on her and asked about 'em -- she said a friend at the mag got an early pair and passed them on. Damn you people! :)

The dresses are going to be hydrangea-blue linen, maybe with a slightly steely cast. I think the beigy-mustard will be a nice complement with the right pieces but I should go see the shoes in person.

hahaha, New Shoes bring happiness ergo bring a kind of peace.

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 21:31 (seventeen years ago) link

my resolve is next time I buy shoes they will be rather expensive & I will look after them. I kinda dig some of Miss Sixty's shoes, the basic ones without lots of stupid trim and stuff. hot or not?

dar1a g (daria g), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 22:09 (seventeen years ago) link

I've never, ever liked Miss Sixty stuff, as it's too expensive to be a good deal and too cheap/cheaply made to be a proper Expensive Shoe.

I saw a pair of YSLs at the shop where klepto stylists sell on things, for £250. I might go out to Bond Street etc and try a pair later, just for the hell of it.

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 07:27 (seventeen years ago) link

Miss Sixty is too expensive? WTF.

What the hell is that girl ever wearing on her body.

Chloe's style has gone totally bonkers. She's wearing oversized baby clothes.

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 07:49 (seventeen years ago) link

Their shoes are £70 here and are not as nice as the shoes in Office, for example, which are cheaper but of similar quality and are employing better designers. So not a great deal for the price, to me. I'd rather go to a sample sale and spend £100 on something from a higher-end designer because the £70 trendy, one or two-season shoe is a false economy.
Most of my shoes cost £30 BTW. Which reminds me, must go retrieve shoes from re-heeler.

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 08:18 (seventeen years ago) link

Ugh, I know but somewhere along the line I got out of the habit of going to sample sales. I should start again!

Laurel (Laurel), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 11:56 (seventeen years ago) link

According to this mornings Times, women spend on average £80,000 on footwear in their lifetime, which I found a bit difficult to believe. No figures for men though (~10-15 K I'd guess).

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 12:06 (seventeen years ago) link

ally the first red pair are gorgeous. those would be my choice.

fun fact: in australia shoes like that, with the strap around the ankle, are called "yank catchers". it dates back the the second world war when US soldiers would arrive here by ship. young ladies, hoping to catch an american man, would rush down to the docks to greet them wearing that same style shoe.

sunny successor (katharine), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 13:02 (seventeen years ago) link

Since when were shoes called 'vans'?

the pinefox (the pinefox), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 13:08 (seventeen years ago) link

the first official day of business was March 15, 1966, when the first Vans shoe store opened at 704 East Broadway in Anaheim, California.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 13:11 (seventeen years ago) link

Ally, I'd go with the first pair too.

If I had the money,

Mädchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 13:16 (seventeen years ago) link

OK I purchased shoe #1, which was my preference too honestly, but it was also the most expensive pair so I was being all wishy washy. Then I remembered I actually spent $350 recently on two sets of underwear so really why am I fussing over $100 on shoes. oh, creditcards.

xpost oh I like those red ones!!!!

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 13:17 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh btw I'm just gonna say this, I clicked on that weird RUMPIE WORKS IN MY OFFICE thread to see what ppl were talking about, and it's just Mickey who is like pretty much one of the 5 worst people on ILX so don't worry about being called assholes by him. Just nod yr head, it's his last days before imprisonment.

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 13:20 (seventeen years ago) link

Like one of these?

For the benefit of PF: Vans are a brand of trainer.

I think I am going to get these as pretty work shoes, if I can a) fit them on my feet and b) scare up £40 out of nowhere:

Archel (Archel), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 13:41 (seventeen years ago) link

Oddly enough have just had my friend S4tind3r on the interweb mail asking me to compare the price of agnes b. sandals in London with the $250 they cost in NYC. She is to hang on to her cash and get them here. Crisis averted!

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 14:44 (seventeen years ago) link

my friend j0hn got some new shoes last week

it'5 true

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 14:55 (seventeen years ago) link

D!ck, you're a good friend.

the pinefox (the pinefox), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 15:21 (seventeen years ago) link

there is pretty much nowhere to buy shoes in DC that's not either very, very expensive (but very, very limited selection & mostly conservative) or nine west. I like those Tara Subkoff easy spirits though. some of the miss sixty at the zappos site are on major sale and only about $70, so.. hmm

dar1a g (daria g), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 17:21 (seventeen years ago) link

DC people, there's a DSW in Pentagon Row! I know, Pentagon Row is kind of gross, but you can walk there from the Pentagon City Metro stop, right? if you're in an affordable-shoe-coveting pinch.

horseshoe (horseshoe), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 17:26 (seventeen years ago) link

also, yay, Ally bought the pretty shoes!

horseshoe (horseshoe), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 17:27 (seventeen years ago) link

I used to live at 9 West 46th St.

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 17:49 (seventeen years ago) link

do you have to buy shoes that look like that once every two months or something? The middle ones are utterly disgusting btw.

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 18:28 (seventeen years ago) link

the middle ones are my personal fave actually.

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 18:29 (seventeen years ago) link

you are talking to a person who has basically decided that the only non-trainers he needs to buy from now on, with the possible exception of fancy dressemup footwear, are black doc martens, because they fall apart less often than other shoes, and I refuse to wear a brown belt.

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 18:30 (seventeen years ago) link

The middle ones look like something a Republican 20-something would wear to work. After work he puts on his casual loafers and his striped shirt, collar flipped, and goes to the Front Page. V. not sexy.

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 18:32 (seventeen years ago) link

I'd get the middle ones! They're great!

paulhw (paulhw), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 18:33 (seventeen years ago) link

I don't really like shoes with laces to be totally honest.

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 18:35 (seventeen years ago) link

if any of them, the 3rd. first one is gawdawful.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 18:39 (seventeen years ago) link

The 3rd pair.

Holy makkara, Toivo! (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 18:39 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah 3rd is best out of those choices.

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 18:40 (seventeen years ago) link

wait I thought you hated slip-ons. now it's lace-ups?

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 18:44 (seventeen years ago) link

I hate velcro.

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 18:46 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah, 3rd pair

xpost - unfortunately I have no luck at DSW, I went and they didn't have my size (10) in anything cool

dar1a g (daria g), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 18:57 (seventeen years ago) link

I guess this is as good a thread as any to ask what Ugg boots are and why they are so bad and hated.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 19:01 (seventeen years ago) link

dude whats the matter with brown belts/shoes, tom?

john, come to georgetown - ill show you.

SQUARECOATS (plsmith), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 19:10 (seventeen years ago) link

Well, I've been told I can also find out in Lincoln Park -- but being fairly blind to fashion in general puts me at a distinct disadvantage here.
