basically if you take your pro controller and hold down just the right arm of the d-pad and shift the weight of your finger up and down you can get diagonal inputs because its too sensitive, even though you're not touching the up or down arms. same with any direction on it. theoretically this can happen a little bit with any d-pad thats not individual buttons if you're applying enough force, but the pro controller one is way more sensitive to it than e.g. the ds4.

apparently you can fix it with some surgery by using insulating tape to cover the inner half of the contact pads underneath but i haven't bothered to try since it's not too bad on the xenoblade model that i have.

ciderpress, Saturday, 20 April 2019 16:44 (four years ago) link

Wow. I mean that can only boil down to “wasn’t broke, tried to fix it anyway” right?

But yeah thanks for the reminder here, I was all set to grab Cuphead but hadn’t stopped to think about the lack of anything appropriate to play it with.

JimD, Saturday, 20 April 2019 16:56 (four years ago) link

i like the joycon disconnected d-pad! its only bad for fighting games where you have to do motions and such

ciderpress, Saturday, 20 April 2019 17:00 (four years ago) link

stick would also be fine for cuphead

ciderpress, Saturday, 20 April 2019 17:00 (four years ago) link

Sad lol that we’re now referring to four buttons as a “disconnected d-pad”!

Maybe stick would work but I know that pretty much every ps twitch shooter I’ve played over the last few years has given me the choice and I’ve ended up favouring the d-pad.

JimD, Saturday, 20 April 2019 17:06 (four years ago) link

yeah, for intense dexterity games i have to use the d-pad. analog is out of the question.

pretty much any d-pad hurts my tender thumbs after hours of use (i had to quit celeste on ps4 two different times because of minor thumb injuries!), but the joycon version ends up hurting much more quickly. :(

Played Celeste entirely with the stick tbh

yeah other than fighting games i prefer using the analog stick for anything with more than 4-way movement, even compared to a good dpad

ciderpress, Saturday, 20 April 2019 17:34 (four years ago) link

You’ll be telling us you play Tetris with a stick next (my son does this and it makes me feel like I’ve failed as a parent (as does the fact he keeps his y-axis uninverted in FPS games)).

Shocked at the noobs here

L'assie (Euler), Saturday, 20 April 2019 19:53 (four years ago) link

I have to play Tetris 99 with the Joy-Cons bc dpad is mandatory and I accidentally hard drop with the pro controller’s dpad which is unacceptable. But doing diagonal inputs on a dpad is the pits as far as I’m concerned.

xp you're posting in the switch thread where the correct way to do it is gyro instead of stick for Y-axis

Dang that’s true

I’m happy with my pro controller
But one of my joypad sticks seems messed up already, it gets stuck a lot when pushing right and doesn’t register right movement until you get it unstuck. Not sure if Nintendo will service it, have had it more than a year

L'assie (Euler), Saturday, 20 April 2019 20:00 (four years ago) link

if you don’t invert Y-axis you’re a tory sorry

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 20 April 2019 20:38 (four years ago) link

I've gotten weirdly so good at Tetris 99

I said "fuck it" and stopped trying to learn T-spins and just started playing with good garbage technique and I've come in 1st four times this past week.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Saturday, 20 April 2019 22:37 (four years ago) link

I was happy to see that they changed the scoring for the 2nd Tetris 99 tournament; unfortunately I didn't realize it was even happening until the end of the 2nd day. :(

Also, Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight finally went on sale, so I picked it up last night. Enjoying it very much so far.

i now have more hours on tetris than i do on botw + mario combined O_o

found this simple t-spin triple setup that helped me finally wrap my mind around them after a long time of mostly non-understanding (keep an eye on the pieces on the left, everything else is just filling in the gaps)

Nhex, Sunday, 21 April 2019 05:09 (four years ago) link

OK I have started opening my Tetris games with a T-triple set-up and you know what? sure. It's fine. Thank you.

What is annoying is end-game... there is no reallll logic to what pieces will flip across the landscape to their intended location, and 90% of my late-game deaths are the result of me trying to flip and important piece westward and having it run aground

Played a bit of Cuphead, it's like an adorable, beautifully designed Contra! I think I need to remap the controls, though, since it's set up to be pretty cramp-tastic

That company seems to have taken a turn for the, well, turn-based. I loved the Metroidvania ones, but didn't buy the last one. Will look into this one.

heist is older than dig 2 fwiw, they've been alternating platformer and strategy games

ciderpress, Thursday, 25 April 2019 21:36 (four years ago) link

Had no idea!

Been playing a bit more of Cuphead, which has been a blast. The fights really mess with you. I was attacking a slot machine, and not only was I unclear if and how I was damaging it, every time I died and thought I got a bead on it for next time, its attack would change up! Sneaky.

Dark Souls for $28 or katamari reroll for $21? Ive not played either, and I've saved the island express.
