*click!*

They are one of the most mysteriously great sounding live acts since Phoenix. I mean, just literally, how good they sound, for four or five dudes and what they're doing. I assume there must be some sort of audio magic at work, but it's subtle, if it's even happening.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 18 April 2019 17:43 (five years ago) link

BTW, I heard from a source the the title of their next album will indeed be " I assume there must be some sort of audio magic at work, but it's subtle, if it's even happening."

also lmao at the very small but loud group of people shouting "antichrist! antichrist! antichrist!"

Ha! One day they'll just randomly play it and all hell will break loose.

The production design for their show is super good.

Four band members plus two auxilliary musicians plus two dancers that also sing backing vocals plus backing tracks covering the rest of the parts.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Thursday, 18 April 2019 20:13 (five years ago) link

*auxiliary.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Thursday, 18 April 2019 20:15 (five years ago) link

Oh, I know *how* they do it, it just sounds very, very good. Clean, solid, locked together air-tight. I feel that way whenever I see, say, a mainstream country act or something like Panic at the Disco, where there is a lot of movement and showmanship and playing but it sounds almost identical to the record (which is already pretty slick to begin with). It's just so impeccably ... *produced*, but live.

what was the YoutuBe video Brad posted? it seems to have disappeared (or the wifi in this taco shop sucks)

this, this, this. was absolutely a highlight of Coachella set. maybe THE highlight.

It was the Coachella set. It seems to have pulled from Youtube for the usual, obvious reasons.

I’m sure it’ll be officially uploaded shortly

alpine static, Friday, 19 April 2019 15:50 (five years ago) link

It's funny, because everything I've read about the new album suggests that it's going to be their kind of version of a "going back to our roots" album, but I'll bet it isn't.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Friday, 19 April 2019 16:43 (five years ago) link

"We think it'll sound like Burial" suggests "going back to our roots" for you?
Admittedly that was just one of several things they've said about the album, but it was also, like, the first

You can't see it but I had an epiphany (Champiness), Friday, 19 April 2019 20:48 (five years ago) link

Okay, almost everything. I tend not to pay attention to what an artist thinks their record is going to sound like before they've started make it.

Remember, they were going to put out an album under the name of Drive Like I Do before that plan was scrapped, and since then Healy has spoken about wanting to return to the feel of being a small emo band rather than go down a more arena rock route. Also, lyrically, the ideas so far suggest the territory of the first album rather than anything since.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Friday, 19 April 2019 20:57 (five years ago) link

I would die for another record like the first one, it’s the one I play most often now

The band was, of course, great tonight. A couple of funny things. First, I had hoped to take my daughter, but she is for whatever reason totally averse to the band, which ... I don't know why. I was talking with the friend I took in her stead and we thought that maybe she's just too young by a few years, that this is music for 20-somethings, not teens, as much as our teens would like to think they're mature and worldly. Who knows? But second was my friend himself, who I took as a sort of experiment. He's older than me (in his low '50s) and had never even heard of the band before I invited, so I was curious what he'd think. He came straight from work, and go figure, he liked it a lot. (Which was not surprising, because what's not to like, right?). And last - and this is even goofier - I wore what I had been wearing all day, a commemorative "Fort Reno Washington, DC" t-shirt (Fort Reno being the public park where a lot of Dischord bands would play). As I watched the show I thought, jeez, the 1975 is sort of the anti-Dischord, isn't it? And then about halfway through the set Matty took off his jacket and ... he was wearing a Minor Threat shirt!

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 9 May 2019 04:06 (four years ago) link

i hope i'll see them live again in july. unfortunately it's in a music festival.

btw, did anyone hear the new no rome's ep?
i'm enjoying it quite a lot, specially the first two emo tunes, although i would like them to be a little bit longer, i guess.

that interview was terrific

that guy asked good unconventional questions! and good on those other folks for not interrupting the long story.

no doubt i was kuleshoving him but i enjoyed what seemed to me the progression in stages of the silent older guy's expression from "who is this vapid twerp" to "wow life"

k3vin k., Tuesday, 28 May 2019 00:26 (four years ago) link

Seems to me that they're - understandably - struggling to write and record a new album while still on the promotional cycle for the current one. It must be difficult for them to concentrate on the making of it for any length of time before having to fuck off somewhere else to play a gig or do a TV appearance or other promo.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Tuesday, 28 May 2019 00:57 (four years ago) link

I don't think they'll be having any problems coming up with ideas, though.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Tuesday, 28 May 2019 01:03 (four years ago) link

I was under the impression that it was done?

k3vin k., Tuesday, 28 May 2019 01:15 (four years ago) link

saw them tonight... they are of course superb. it's funny now in a 75 min set you're getting like 60% singles and only a few of their singles would be among my true favorite songs but it's a really fun, hit-packed, energetic show. (looking at setlists it seems like they basically have 3 shows: an hourlong festival set that is all new stuff and hits; a 75 min long festival set that is new stuff, hits, w/ a few head picks thrown in; a 90 min arena/amphitheater show that has a half dozen head picks). they still aren't incredibly loud but the band really does shine... "she's american" & "the sound" start to bend towards disco, even something like "change of heart" gets this sort of loose and limber almost danceable playing

J0rdan S., Sunday, 2 June 2019 08:29 (four years ago) link

last i heard on the album was early fall but they're on tour almost literally w/o break thru september so in my head i'm sort of just assuming october or november. it would just be very unlike them to release an album w/o being around to promo it heavily... when i interviewed matty he talked about understanding that their fans really respond to a traditional album rollout where there are these bread crumbs to fixate on and contextualize w/in the sort of mythology that true stans are always building. they do work extremely hard so it's not out of the question that they could try and pull it off while on tour in asia/australia but we'll see (i'm just speculating)

J0rdan S., Sunday, 2 June 2019 08:39 (four years ago) link

the original plan was to have a single in February and do a gradual rollout again with the album out about now i think? but judging from all the interviews they've given over the last while the album has taken longer than expected and since it's kept getting pushed back (before this latest delay there was supposed to be a single on May 31st) and i think in a recent interview Matty talked about how he's still coming up with new ideas for it. he's also talked about possibly just releasing the album all at once a few times so anything's possible, but i'd agree that october/november with maybe some singles seems most likely at this point. he keeps talking about how the main influences on the album are UK garage and Burial so i'm hoping there's a bunch of stuff that sounds like "how to draw/petrichor" but as like actual dance-pop songs not just as one of their cool soundscape things.
