At the risk of getting all *huggles*, I have really enjoyed working through this Dutch tree. There is something extra about this language that seems to have gotten a hook in me.

Haven’t got to the advanced part of Dutch-language culture yet to understand the appropriate balance of huggles and distance/irony

Theory of Every Zing (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 18 April 2019 01:28 (four years ago) link

Depends on where you live. We don't do huggles here in West Flanders. I do though. But then I feel an outsider/buitenstaander.

nathom, Thursday, 18 April 2019 07:12 (four years ago) link

A dialect word: muilen. (Lewd word for kissing. Mainly used in East Flanders)

nathom, Saturday, 20 April 2019 10:38 (four years ago) link

That would be our Dutch “bekken”, I guess. Kissing as in French kissing, right?

breastcrawl, Saturday, 20 April 2019 11:12 (four years ago) link

Wil jij dat ik gek word?

Theory of Every Zing (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 20 April 2019 11:17 (four years ago) link

Sorry, that was the last sentence I got from Duo.

Theory of Every Zing (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 20 April 2019 11:24 (four years ago) link

Oh god, bekken. Ewww. That sounds awful. But yeah, french kissing.

nathom, Sunday, 21 April 2019 05:14 (four years ago) link

Sounds weird, "wil je dat ik gek word?"

nathom, Sunday, 21 April 2019 05:15 (four years ago) link

Yep. My husband said they used vozen. But that's not really kissing. Vozen: petting.

My French is going slow. Tempted to do a "free trial" (?) so I can cram a few hours of it.

Beste meneer breastcrawl....

Geachte Meneer James,

Met deze post wil ik aantonen dat men de eerste zin nooit mag starten met ik. Dit gezegd zijnde, beken ik een egoïste te zijn. Alles draait rond mij. Zoals we hier zeggen: "Ikke ikke ikke en de rest kan stikken."

Mvg
Nathalie

Eet men pindakaas in Nederland?

Theory of Every Zing (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 1 May 2019 12:39 (four years ago) link

In België eten we geen pindakaas. In Nederland is het zeer populair. Ik eet liever speculaas pasta.

Waarom “IJ” in IJzeren Gordijn?

Theory of Every Zing (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 3 May 2019 01:29 (four years ago) link

Heb je even?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IJ_(digraph)

tl;dr: it’s considered one letter.

(Also, it’s “DUO *heeft* me net gezegd...”)

breastcrawl, Friday, 3 May 2019 07:22 (four years ago) link

Dankjewel!

Think my verbal confusion was coming from
DUO heeft/hebt me gezegd.

Theory of Every Zing (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 3 May 2019 11:56 (four years ago) link

In Amsterdam dialect it would be: “DUO hep me net gezegd (sounds like: gesegt), so you were sort of fine-ish anyway...

breastcrawl, Friday, 3 May 2019 13:09 (four years ago) link

Yeah, I actually almost spelled it with a ‘t’ at the end.

How I Redd One of the Blecchs (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 5 May 2019 18:04 (four years ago) link

Is it waar naartoe or waarnaartoe? I'd say the former.

nathom, Sunday, 5 May 2019 18:33 (four years ago) link

DUO said the latter. Was interested in that long word, which is why I posted that.

Took a break from Dutch and am working on Greek a little bit, which is fun and interesting for various reasons I can elaborate on if you like.
