re: the console of the year vote, it was separate from the main thing, ppl picked their fave consoles overall for theyear. could include games they didn't even nom/vote. guess people spent more time on the ps4 this year!

friday the 13th is a puzzle game - no survival aspects. it's actually pretty great!

what a game wow

ultimately couldn't close the deal (those electrical sucking worms that attach themselves to you in the lava zone got so tedious i stopped playing) but the first 20 hours or so are unbelievable. cannot imagine how good it is in VR.

in the top 20 we are definitely getting into some wows now!

I might stop at top 10 today depending on how slow i am. i don't wanna still be posting at 7pm. but if i can keep a decent pace i shouldn't be too late? nah fuck it WE'RE DOING IT ALL TODAY

that's a lot of yakuza games away still but I'll get there someday

So I've only played 5-10 hours of Yakuza 6 so far, not enough to say GOTY CONFIRMED yet, but having playing Yakuza Kiwami, Zero and Kiwami 2 all in the past 12 or so months, they are all GOTY-worthy games and so far Y6 has me even more enthralled. So let's call it an educated estimate.

THESE GAMES ARE SO GOOD.

myself & one other voter said that they would have voted yakuza 0 highly were it not against the spirit of the thing (played it on ps4, not pc)... so it could have been in the top 10 easily this year! or if we all played it in 2017, even higher!!

i know nothing abt this one so i hope someone comes to tell us about it!!

it's cute! it's a visual novel sorta about a relationship and breakup that is genuinely affecting. iirc either no or barely any words so it's all told visually/musically and thru little puzzles.

Oh, I played that! It was pre-released for download on Valentine's day iirc. It was very short, but aesthetically promising.

I'm enjoying this countdown btw. I only really play games on my phone (and board games) these days, but I should really put in a vote next year. Is there a minimum for voting?

no minimum for voting! you get 100 points to allocate and up to 30 for any individual game. if you vote for one game you can give it 30 points and be done!

i couldn't finish the first pillars of eternity tho i did enjoy what i played. there's just so much text and most of it isn't great. they should borrow a page from alexis kennedy on how to write memorable scenes and dialogues without just drowning the reader in words.

oh that reminds me if i had played it in time i would've voted for Root - fantastic asymmetrical game w/ a woodland creatures theme for those of u who are really interested in the COIN games but find the topics too depressing.

if Gandhi comes out next year tho i'll prob vote for it if i can play it in time!

root is neat ive only played it once though and was the cats who seem like they play the most basic game. the birds mechanic looked really clever

The second instalment tries to address some of these issues, not always successfully, but isometric-style CRPGs are my nostalgic opium of choice so I go easy on the writing (which is still upper-tier shlock compared to the usual fare).

I voted for Florence, a love story told via WarioWare-esque game mechanics. A cool little experience.

wow kinda shocked how low it came out

it's a game with a lot of problems but the stuff that's good about it i think mostly ends up being the takeaway: it's a gorgeous cowboy simulator

no way, top 10 is gonna be all indies this year those are what had ~mindshare~

the wrinkle detail on the horse testicles got downgraded from the prerelease trailer footage and there was really no saving it from gamer dismissal after that

looking forward to posting some version of "ultimately tho too iterative and too long and bloated but somehow still made my list" later on in the poll

i think i was just disappointed that it had changing respawn points which is the least clever way to lock in progress with the game's mechanic
