i actually kinda liked dillane as stannis. he was so dour that it was funny.

voodoo chili, Wednesday, 17 April 2019 03:01 (five years ago) link

Every time I think of anything related to Stannis/Shireen/Melisandre I get a headache, I mean, Euron is the worst but at least he's quotable. I cannot remember a single word that Stannis uttered and am happy about that

I gotta give to Joffrey one of my favourite laughs in the series. "I hear that Stannis never smiles." *pulls out his sword about four inches* "I'll give him a red smile. From ear to ear."

My favorite voices on the show: Roose Bolton, Beric Dondarrion.

I must be the only person who liked Littlefinger!

Hey, wither Podrick?

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Wednesday, 17 April 2019 04:19 (five years ago) link

xp jorah mormont has my favorite voice on the show

voodoo chili, Wednesday, 17 April 2019 04:25 (five years ago) link

and yet here i stand

these are not all of the possible side effects (Karl Malone), Wednesday, 17 April 2019 04:50 (five years ago) link

Couldn’t care less about Daenerys but something about Jorah confessing his undying love and devotion toward her makes me emotional

flamboyant goon tie included, Wednesday, 17 April 2019 06:37 (five years ago) link

Jorah was intriguing in the first season but has become probably the most tediously one-note character in the whole show, even if the actor is good. There are characters like Tyrion or Bronn or the Hound where you feel yourself internally cheering whenever they appear on screen, and he's at the other end of the spectrum for me, just an enthusiasm drain. (See also Jaqen, Missandei & Grey Worm, frankly Theon at this point).

Matt DC, Wednesday, 17 April 2019 08:10 (five years ago) link

I just can’t forgive Bronn for his crimes against the pop charts in the 1990s, or Littlefinger for that wandering accent. Robert Barathian has the best past life, having been a Full Monty stripper.

Madchen, Wednesday, 17 April 2019 08:23 (five years ago) link

Considering the limitations coming from the writing, I feel most of the actors in the main roles have given performances ranging from decent enough to excellent, except for Harington, Clarke and the dude playing Euron (Pilou Asbæk). I've no problem believing Asbæk is a good actor, but his performance belons to Pirates of Caribbean, not this series. (Though I guess part of the blame for that goes to the showrunners as well, as I can't imagine he chose this approach to the role all by himself.) And Harington and Clarke are just dull and wooden, which is particularly unfortunate given that Jon and Daenerys become the two biggest characters by now. With Harington it doesn't of course help that Jon Snow is a dull character begin with, being the only classic fantasy hero in a show that otherwise tries to avoid that stereotype.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 17 April 2019 09:13 (five years ago) link

Can't forget Asbæk in the Danish historical drama '1864' where he plays a landowner who has sex with a cow.

Simon H., Wednesday, 17 April 2019 15:29 (five years ago) link

He's supposed to be a drab middle management type who has somehow become a king, which Dillane sells well.

I never had a problem with that. Littlefinger’s a slippery, shifty guy. Why should his accent be any different?

It'd have been interesting to see Charles Dance reading for Stannis and vice versa I think

I think the scene where Tywin lectures Jaime while skinning the deer is one of my favourite scenes in television tbh!

flamboyant goon tie included, Wednesday, 17 April 2019 19:44 (five years ago) link

Hey, wither Podrick?

I didn't think anything of him. He has one expression on his face the entire series. The only interesting thing about him/his character is the whole "he's good at fucking" note

I forgot to list Ros but obv she was amazing, love the post-coital scene with her and Pycelle

this episode was fan service + daddy issues. Kinda feel like the characters that don't gaf about their dads or have moved past that are the best adjusted

sarahell, Wednesday, 17 April 2019 19:49 (five years ago) link

oh wait, also conflating next episode's preview in there -- looks like we get another daddy issue scene at least

sarahell, Wednesday, 17 April 2019 19:50 (five years ago) link

Also Sansa was the best thing about this episode, followed by the Grey Worm/Missandei glance when riding past the assembled white ppl

"I must be the only person who liked Littlefinger!"

I really liked it when he got murdered, does that count?

ian, Wednesday, 17 April 2019 20:09 (five years ago) link

Sansa rules.

ian, Wednesday, 17 April 2019 20:10 (five years ago) link

I was rooting for Littlefinger :( More in the books than on the show, though

Frederik B, Wednesday, 17 April 2019 22:07 (five years ago) link

this episode was fan service

Awful fan service (for awful fans) as hardly anything of note happened and the big bad was absent once again. Weren't there five (maybe longer) episodes initially planned for s8? Felt like they padded the first one out into two.

I read an astonishing theory about how the show could pan out, on /r/asoiaf yesterday.

I can link to it here if anyones interested but its so otm it may feel spoilery.

Simon H., Wednesday, 17 April 2019 23:49 (five years ago) link

if that theory holds, and with valonqar meaning "little brother", i have two questions -- just whose little brother is it, and how long does one have to be dead before the night king can no longer raise you.

i like that theory

does Euron count as a little brother ...

sarahell, Thursday, 18 April 2019 07:06 (five years ago) link

Unless of course in the final episode Arya takes off her face and reveals she's been Sean Bean all along xp

The valonqar part of the witch's prophesy didn't actually appear in the series, only in the books. In the series she just prophesied the deaths of Cersei's children, not her death. So it'd be a bit weird if the writers would bring that up all of sudden, several seasons after the prophesy scene happened. "Guess what, the witch prophesied other things too, but we cut those out back then..."

https://www.theverge.com/2019/4/17/18412156/george-lucas-game-of-thrones-got-season-8-hbo-final-behind-the-scenes-jon-snow-daenerys-targeryen

According to a 17-minute behind-the-scenes video that HBO released on YouTube, Lucas was hanging out on the Game of Thrones set while director David Nutter was directing the season 8 premiere. The former Star Wars director was sitting by Nutter’s side while they were filming a scene with Jon Snow (Kit Harington) and Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke). Nutter asked Lucas to speak to Harington and Clarke about their performances.

So the scene we've been unfavorably comparing to an awkward couple hanging out in a secluded area in a Star Wars movie.. might have had some direction from George Lucas?

This is amazingly funny
