For the Baldur’s Gate/Icewind Dale/Neverwinter Nights nostalgics among us, Pathfinder: Kingmaker is worth your time (well, almost, as it’s exceedingly long).

pomenitul, Tuesday, 16 April 2019 21:33 (five years ago) link

i am the sole voter for kiwami 2! play it you poxy fules

they moved it to the engine from 6 instead of the engine from 0 (as kiwami 1 was), gave majima a (very short) side story mode that is quietly lovely (but also has him, uh, stabbing people like that, because majima), more of the minigames and weirdness you've grown to love. I have heard that Yakuza 2 is one of the less-loved ones in the series, which I guess has me pretty stoked for 3/4/5 because I thought it was great!!

i thought i voted odyssey but i guess it just missed my list. it's v open world what you'd expect from a late gen AC game lots of AC mechanics + lots of borrowed stuff from other games (FC series or the LOTR games w/ the nemesis system). it's v well polished but gets stale and exhausts its gameplay elements long before you're even close to finishing it. cool plot stuff includes questlines with famous greeks like sophocles + socrates. ultimately tho too iterative and too long and bloated to make my list.

slay the spire is a v clever deck building roguelike/rpgish game w/ enough new ideas and a unique enough aesthetic that it's definitely worth a look, esp if you like the genre. there are 3 different characters you can play each w/ entirely different deck components (tho there are colorless cards that are shared between decks normally w/ exceptional effects) and design. i think it's a really excellent game tbh, a little surprised it didn't get more notice on ilg. i think it's the kind of thing a lot of posters here would dig.

looking forward to posting some version of "ultimately tho too iterative and too long and bloated but somehow still made my list" later on in the poll

Slay the Spire is great. The closest thing to a sequel to Dream Quest that I’ve come across.

I find myself thinking about Fortnite a lot even though I suck at it. The chess of building your fort while opponents are chipping away at it results in these odd landscapes of abandoned stairways and towers ascending to nowhere, like a series of competing Hudson Yard prototypes.

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Tuesday, 16 April 2019 22:36 (five years ago) link

Surprised I was the sole vote for both Bloodstained and Dragon Ball Fighterz!
Bloodstained was a Kickstarter reward for most but universally praised and for good reason - it's a cover version of Castlevania III that RIPS.
And DBFZ is a gorgeous license use, the fighter of the year pretty much, fun as hell.

Nhex, Tuesday, 16 April 2019 23:11 (five years ago) link

Slay the Spire has been a lot of fun, still playing it a lot. Gris was gorgeous but minor (like me).

My 2018 GOTY/GOAT was BOTW so I had to pick a distant second for this poll and went with Odyssey. I never got into the AC series but Odyssey stole a few good ideas from Witcher, especially making the main character a thug-for-hire as opposed to The Chosen One, so she’s got this cheerful “sure I’ll go stab a guy for you” attitude that helps justify the innumerable side quests. Her character kept me going through the Ubisoft treadmill a lot longer than expected — she’s funny, horny, no-nonsense, thinks the gods are sort of lame, enjoys solving problems by kicking them to death. I liked sailing around the Aegean and having her all-lady crew burst into song.

friday the 13th is a puzzle game - no survival aspects. it's actually pretty great!

ultimately couldn't close the deal (those electrical sucking worms that attach themselves to you in the lava zone got so tedious i stopped playing) but the first 20 hours or so are unbelievable. cannot imagine how good it is in VR.

Mordy, Wednesday, 17 April 2019 18:37 (four years ago) link

in the top 20 we are definitely getting into some wows now!

I might stop at top 10 today depending on how slow i am. i don't wanna still be posting at 7pm. but if i can keep a decent pace i shouldn't be too late? nah fuck it WE'RE DOING IT ALL TODAY

that's a lot of yakuza games away still but I'll get there someday

ciderpress, Wednesday, 17 April 2019 18:43 (four years ago) link

So I've only played 5-10 hours of Yakuza 6 so far, not enough to say GOTY CONFIRMED yet, but having playing Yakuza Kiwami, Zero and Kiwami 2 all in the past 12 or so months, they are all GOTY-worthy games and so far Y6 has me even more enthralled. So let's call it an educated estimate.

THESE GAMES ARE SO GOOD.

xp i skipped 3/4/5 tbh! 1, 0, 2, 6! i am a madman.

myself & one other voter said that they would have voted yakuza 0 highly were it not against the spirit of the thing (played it on ps4, not pc)... so it could have been in the top 10 easily this year! or if we all played it in 2017, even higher!!

it's cute! it's a visual novel sorta about a relationship and breakup that is genuinely affecting. iirc either no or barely any words so it's all told visually/musically and thru little puzzles.

Mordy, Wednesday, 17 April 2019 19:00 (four years ago) link

Oh, I played that! It was pre-released for download on Valentine's day iirc. It was very short, but aesthetically promising.

I'm enjoying this countdown btw. I only really play games on my phone (and board games) these days, but I should really put in a vote next year. Is there a minimum for voting?

alrakis morissette (tangenttangent), Wednesday, 17 April 2019 19:03 (four years ago) link

no minimum for voting! you get 100 points to allocate and up to 30 for any individual game. if you vote for one game you can give it 30 points and be done!

i couldn't finish the first pillars of eternity tho i did enjoy what i played. there's just so much text and most of it isn't great. they should borrow a page from alexis kennedy on how to write memorable scenes and dialogues without just drowning the reader in words.

Mordy, Wednesday, 17 April 2019 19:10 (four years ago) link

oh that reminds me if i had played it in time i would've voted for Root - fantastic asymmetrical game w/ a woodland creatures theme for those of u who are really interested in the COIN games but find the topics too depressing.
