MattDC - next time!

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Tuesday, 16 April 2019 10:15 (five years ago) link

Yeah the SE1 thing was probably my fault and if anyone has brilliant ideas for better spots that won't be full and are convenient for people to drop in they should suggest them.

(The Lord Clyde is as good as ever but probably a bit small for these purposes; they do allow you to reserve tables in the back room I think but I am against such behaviours.)

(Yes a flyer is when you're on a round but the people you're drinking with are drinking at a sensible speed and you're in need of another when they're nowhere near so you get yourself a quick off-round drink while still remaining in the round.)

Tim, Tuesday, 16 April 2019 11:12 (five years ago) link

I've heard SE7 is nice

imago, Tuesday, 16 April 2019 11:14 (five years ago) link

In all seriousness though, Bermondsey is 1 stop from London Bridge and possesses numerous fine pubs and a clutch of nearby craft brewers to match

imago, Tuesday, 16 April 2019 11:15 (five years ago) link

bermondsey is a minor mare for me (req. bus and overground then underground plus walk if there's a walk) -- BUT happy to go with a majority tbh, esp if the mare also means we can all sit down and stretch out

mark s, Tuesday, 16 April 2019 11:21 (five years ago) link

There is a fine clutch of craft brewers - we should not go there.

Andrew Farrell, Tuesday, 16 April 2019 11:51 (five years ago) link

Yeah lol please.

Getting a lot of positives on Lord Clyde. Is it smaller than royal Oak?

xyzzzz__, Tuesday, 16 April 2019 11:54 (five years ago) link

slightly bigger if memory serves (caveat: years since i was there)

mark s, Tuesday, 16 April 2019 12:01 (five years ago) link

I thought I’d been there v recently so I searched my email and the occasion I was thinking of was pals visiting from DC in...April 2006(!).

But surely there was one other visit in the last 13 years.

I don’t get out much.

Michael Jones, Tuesday, 16 April 2019 12:13 (five years ago) link

Clyde marginally smaller than the Royal Oak I'd guess, but there's surely not much in it either way.

Tim, Tuesday, 16 April 2019 12:58 (five years ago) link

The Lord Clyde is often heaving in the early evenings but tends to empty out, my memory is it's marginally better for a largeish group than the Royal Oak or the King's Arms, both of which are fine pubs but awkward for groups bigger than four or five.

The Horseshoe Inn on the other side of the tracks towards Bermondsey St has a pretty big, open back room and lots of space for outdoor drinking, which is where most people will be if it's a nice day, which it looks like being.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 16 April 2019 13:10 (five years ago) link

Aye, work go out to there a far bit - and also to the Miller further along that street, which again might be alright if there's a lot of people outside.

mark s, Tuesday, 16 April 2019 13:33 (five years ago) link

Happy with either the Lord Clyde or Horseshoe. I’m not convinced it’ll be all that busy. It’s been fairly quiet cos school holidays and people want to get away for the weekend.

Cue pic of Fizzles’ comically squeezed face in heaving crowd at the bar.

Fizzles, Tuesday, 16 April 2019 13:40 (five years ago) link

Yeah I feel like everyone at work is going away or already away tbh.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Tuesday, 16 April 2019 13:49 (five years ago) link

horseshoe sounds good (even if the one i have in my head is actually in uckington):

I obviously mean it'll be alright to drink inside while everyone's outside.

seeing this thread regularly bob to the surface like a recalcitrant jobby for days in a row has left me with the impression that drinking in london is a challenge akin to the moon landing

kubrick faked our FAP

mark s, Tuesday, 16 April 2019 15:11 (five years ago) link

OK, I'm calling it. Unless someone comes up with a compelling argument as to why the Lord Clyde is, in fact, the better option then in honor of the former poster extraordinaire of the same name we're going to The Horseshoe.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Tuesday, 16 April 2019 15:18 (five years ago) link

Both are equally shit for me to get to from work so I don't care but outdoor spaces are nice.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Tuesday, 16 April 2019 15:19 (five years ago) link

kubrick faked our FAP

i'd long suspected thus from the cryptic hints you've been peppering through your posts for years now tbh

(Disclaimer - not actually been to the Horseshoe at peak post-work pub hours)

Matt DC, Tuesday, 16 April 2019 15:23 (five years ago) link

They actually took place in a studio backlot in LA.

Do you like 70s hard rock with a guitar hero? (Tom D.), Tuesday, 16 April 2019 15:23 (five years ago) link

The fact that it's in the elbow of a backstreet does help.

Andrew Farrell, Tuesday, 16 April 2019 15:25 (five years ago) link

I'll be in town on May 9th.

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 17 April 2019 00:40 (five years ago) link

So def the Horseshoe then? Anyone come up with anything better? It'll take me about an hour to get there so I should be there around 6:15-6:30. Looking forward to it!

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Thursday, 18 April 2019 08:38 (five years ago) link

Horeshoe is cool with me.

My aspiration is to start drinking earlier than that but I probably won't make it earlier than 6. See you all later.

xyzzzz__, Thursday, 18 April 2019 09:07 (five years ago) link

I'm supposed to be working til 6:30 so I'll probably be there about 7, if management leave earlier then so will I

Colonel Poo, Thursday, 18 April 2019 09:11 (five years ago) link

Horseshoe works for me. Solid unglamorous choice.

woof, Thursday, 18 April 2019 09:11 (five years ago) link

I'll probably be there quite early, leaving my plan to not get totally blootered before the weekend in serious doubt.

Do you like 70s hard rock with a guitar hero? (Tom D.), Thursday, 18 April 2019 09:12 (five years ago) link

If all goes according to plan I'll be there before 6 also.

(Also Tombot hooray we should have a pint or some pints, let us know where you're staying and whatnot and we can endlessly discuss where to drink and who's available.)

Tim, Thursday, 18 April 2019 09:16 (five years ago) link

And hopefully have come to some sort of decision by May 9th.

Do you like 70s hard rock with a guitar hero? (Tom D.), Thursday, 18 April 2019 09:18 (five years ago) link

Yeah well I don't want to get over-optimistic.

Tim, Thursday, 18 April 2019 09:19 (five years ago) link

i will also be aiming to avoid getting too pie-eyed. probably i will also be there quite early.

Fizzles, Thursday, 18 April 2019 09:21 (five years ago) link

7:30 at best for me, given my work schedule. I will also have a stupid backpack w/work laptop in it, which is just ideal in a crowded pre-holiday pub scenario.

Likely in Sweden when Tombot is in the country - sorry to miss!

Michael Jones, Thursday, 18 April 2019 09:34 (five years ago) link

I have short hair and am wearing black pants and an olive green cardigan but if fizzles and Tom D are there early I should be able to find them. If not I will post here and say hey, who are you?!? Roberto Spiralli is also coming but prob not there until a little later. See you all soon!

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Thursday, 18 April 2019 09:38 (five years ago) link

You might recognise me also ENBB, I reckon I'll recognise you from last time.

Tim, Thursday, 18 April 2019 09:43 (five years ago) link

I also have short hair but my black/olive green combo is reversed (shirt/kecks). Phew!

Michael Jones, Thursday, 18 April 2019 09:53 (five years ago) link

xpost - I definitely will! I just couldn’t remember who else said they’d be there early.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Thursday, 18 April 2019 09:56 (five years ago) link

If I am there early I will have a book, and will be all in blue.

my subconcious tribute to that thread!

xyzzzz__, Thursday, 18 April 2019 13:06 (five years ago) link

One of these days I’ll come to one of these - I’m off work early today so it’s technically possible but I probably need to give my wallet and liver a break.
