Mordy, Monday, 15 April 2019 19:54 (one year ago) link

let's see if anyone wants to take credit for this one

#44. Genital Jousting — 10 Points — 1 Vote

xp also an astoundingly pretty game, kinda goes without saying. this was my preferred alternative to RDR2 for that hi-fi graphics fix last year

ciderpress, Monday, 15 April 2019 19:58 (one year ago) link

important use of xp there as it turns out

ciderpress, Monday, 15 April 2019 19:58 (one year ago) link

#44. Swarmlake — 10 Points — 1 Vote

oops didn't mean to submit that yet. pretend i submitted that about 5 mins from now. like i spaced it out from the last one real nice

how "gamey" is forza horizon 4? i used to love racing games when they were like super off road and daytona but the genre feels like it heavily went in a realistic GT direction which doesn't appeal to me at all.

Mordy, Monday, 15 April 2019 20:08 (one year ago) link

forza motorsport is the realistic GT forza series, the horizon games are open world arcade racers, they're a lot more gamey and fun

ciderpress, Monday, 15 April 2019 20:13 (one year ago) link

#44. System Syzygy — 10 Points — 1 Vote

that looks like a shareware game i played in 1995

ciderpress, Monday, 15 April 2019 20:20 (one year ago) link

that's where i am gonna stop for today!

And, today/tomorrow/Wednesday I will post the results of the three sub-polls. Tomorrow, platforms of 2018. Wednesday, disappointments of 2018. But today...

speaking of old games I bought Ikaruga on Switch last night

don't mock my smock or i'll clean your clock (silby), Monday, 15 April 2019 20:42 (one year ago) link

holy shit there was a cliff Johnson style puzzle game released last year? Woooooow thx ilg!

lumen (esby), Monday, 15 April 2019 20:43 (one year ago) link

I also played System's Twilight in the 90's which based just on that screenshot was almost certainly a direct influence upon System Syzygy! It was a good game.

Dan I., Monday, 15 April 2019 20:47 (one year ago) link

I found out about System Syzygy from andrew plotkin's blog (he created system's twilight and also he was the guy who turned mafia into werewolf).

adam the (abanana), Monday, 15 April 2019 20:52 (one year ago) link

I threw Detroit a vote but definitely don’t recommend it unless “Quick Time Event: The Game” sounds up your alley or you’re a Clancy Brown superfan. Humorless, self-important, cliche, very clownable! AND YET the gimmick of pressing a series of buttons to make characters do boring things like set the table or gather wood eventually made me care about them more? It’s like, I tucked in this orphan girl and told her a bedtime story you’re damn right I’ll murder every human between her and the android haven of Canada.

(1 vote) the Last of us

HI DERE. If not for TLOU, I would definitely have voted for ace rhythm game Yakuza 0 (though if not for TLOU, I may not have gotten back into console gaming).

Audrey Tautoulogy (Leee), Monday, 15 April 2019 21:16 (one year ago) link

There's an iOS game called Calculator:The Game, it's got wacky buttons, so on the level I'm on now you start with 91 and your goal is to get to 19 in 6 button presses and the buttons available are '+5', 'Mirror' (12->1221) and 'Sum'

The Room is the OG very fancy looking room escape / object manipulation games, yes?

I did actually play System Syzygy last year, it was great but I would have completely forgotten about it if I'd voted (which I didn't)

Andrew Farrell, Monday, 15 April 2019 21:19 (one year ago) link

Also I will probably repeat this later but I heart ILE as somewhere that loves games but will give an industry behemoth like MHW 5 points total (NB this is not in any way a reflection on the quality of MHW)

Andrew Farrell, Monday, 15 April 2019 21:22 (one year ago) link

(xp @silby) if you're patient, wait for them to put Atelier Ayesha on switch which is both an entry point and the best game in the series according to several people i trust on this stuff (i haven't played it yet myself). if you're impatient, rorona is a fine entry point / litmus test, and totori is a bit harder but my favorite of the ones i've played

ciderpress, Monday, 15 April 2019 21:28 (one year ago) link

I can be pretty patient considering I still have to beat Octopath or at least beat someone's chapter 4 I'm so slow lol

yeah this is making me immediately interested as well

though it also made me realize that i've stopped getting the monthly emails from cliff's mailing list that i've been on for years and he stopped updating his site, hope he's okay

ciderpress, Monday, 15 April 2019 22:08 (one year ago) link

Moved too fast! I haven't heard of like 90% of these! was fun.
I loved Theme Hospital, flaws and all, Mordy. But I am a cheapskate who will wait for that game to go under $5 or be included in a bundle for pretty much any PC game.

Nhex, Monday, 15 April 2019 22:52 (one year ago) link

that's fair. i don't regret paying for it - it had a good amount of content and my 7yo loves playing it too.

Mordy, Monday, 15 April 2019 22:56 (one year ago) link

bad north reminds me of ftl a lot

Mordy, Monday, 15 April 2019 23:37 (one year ago) link

None of my votes have shown up yet, but I played a bunch of NGU Idle after I saw it on the nominations thread. It's exactly what you'd expect an idle clicker thing to be in 2018 I guess? Both a parody of older idle clickers and a much more complex version of the same. It got it claws into me for a week or two but in retrospect I'd have been happier not picking it up in the first place.

JimD, Tuesday, 16 April 2019 13:27 (one year ago) link

NGU Idle was my nom and vote. I played it more than any other game in 2018, which was enough for me to give it a few points. It starts out very fiddly with the active game being much better than the passive game -- but there comes a point where the best strategy is to play it once briefly every 24 hours to collect some powerful tree fruit, then rebirth.

adam the (abanana), Tuesday, 16 April 2019 13:41 (one year ago) link

bad north like ftl is the kind of game I'll play for years cos I'm easily sated!

calzino, Tuesday, 16 April 2019 13:42 (one year ago) link

although a criticism is the random generating islands delays can be way too slow.

calzino, Tuesday, 16 April 2019 13:44 (one year ago) link

i'm back and ready for more countdown! Let's start with a game that barely missed being tied for 44th with a microslice of a first-place vote!

#43. Dragon Quest XI — 10 Points — 1 Vote — 0.1 First Place Votes

No one else played Dragon Quest last year?!?!?

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Tuesday, 16 April 2019 15:05 (one year ago) link

no one that voted!

these are not all of the possible side effects (Karl Malone), Tuesday, 16 April 2019 15:06 (one year ago) link

0.1 first place votes? hrm!
i wanted to play this but it got buried under everything else coming out. and Spider-Man iirc

Nhex, Tuesday, 16 April 2019 15:07 (one year ago) link

I will play it eventually but not at full price

L'assie (Euler), Tuesday, 16 April 2019 15:08 (one year ago) link

i played it! it's perfectly fine but left me a bit cold

ciderpress, Tuesday, 16 April 2019 15:09 (one year ago) link

felt like playing a jrpg greatest hits collection, every story beat was recognizable and i didn't find any meaningful throughline to tie it all together

ciderpress, Tuesday, 16 April 2019 15:10 (one year ago) link

when someone ranks 10 games at 10 points each, i give them all 0.1 first place votes. it's fun! we get some weeeird decimals sometimes

anyway sorry im back i had to do a real work there for a minute

#42. Blazblue Cross Tag Battle — 10 Points — 2 Votes

Mordy, Tuesday, 16 April 2019 15:46 (one year ago) link

the only tag fighter i've ever gotten into

ciderpress, Tuesday, 16 April 2019 16:04 (one year ago) link

also deserves props for raising the profile of under night which is the best active fighting game right now as it turns out

ciderpress, Tuesday, 16 April 2019 16:06 (one year ago) link

It's fun! Wish I had time to play it beyond the demo, but it still made my list. There were SO many fighters this year.
And yes, Under Night rules.

Nhex, Tuesday, 16 April 2019 16:16 (one year ago) link

yeah that demo weekend was so fun that it basically singlehandedly got me back into fighting games after like 10 years of ignoring them

ciderpress, Tuesday, 16 April 2019 16:20 (one year ago) link

Is that the first to get multiple votes? WE'VE CROSSED THE RUBICON.
