This is a story from the future. It's the story of the world we won by fighting for a #GreenNewDeal. Written and narrated by Representative @AOC.

AOC is the brightest political star born fully of the social media age, and how her political image has functioned online is emblematic of how society now experiences politics. A detailed examination of her digital persona offers a glimpse into the new digital partisanship — how Americans cleave to their ideological matches. Her rise and portrayal offer insight into the central qualities of contemporary politics: relatability, authenticity, and communities built around their identity. And the intense enmity toward her shows how those very same qualities can repel people.

1) The team behind the Green New Deal is alarmingly under-informed about the subject matter
2) The Green New Deal doesn't address the role of housing, urban design, or zoning in carbon emissions

Benjamin-, Friday, 3 May 2019 21:01 (four years ago) link

Sorry, I mean the role those things play in increasing carbon emissions.

Benjamin-, Friday, 3 May 2019 21:03 (four years ago) link

The Green New Deal, however it shakes out, is bound to be a flawed vehicle for addressing human-caused climate change. That's because it is a hybrid, attempting to build a coalition, where some reps who would not vote for a "climate change" bill will vote for it as a jobs bill and sell it to their constituents that way. That's how politics work. The decades-long billion dollar campaign of climate denial has a long tail and we'll be lucky to get anything moving before 2021.

A is for (Aimless), Friday, 3 May 2019 21:11 (four years ago) link

there are a lot of important things that aren't addressed in the Green New Deal. for example, it doesn't include anything about the mechanisms by which a price will be placed at carbon, which is probably the single most important step to reducing carbon emissions.

that's because at the moment, the green new deal is a resolution, not a bill. it's 14 pages, mostly a list of goals. i don't know what will be in the actual proposed legislation, but it will be many times longer than that.

It's good. Ocasio Cortez comes off very well, magnificent.

Man, and all the Crowley supporters in Jackson Heights made me laugh.

Yerac, Saturday, 4 May 2019 00:38 (four years ago) link

I wouldn’t be able to enjoy it, I know I’d be questioning the objectivity of the filmmakers the whole time

calstars, Saturday, 4 May 2019 01:56 (four years ago) link

I’m sure it’s an effective piece of propaganda

you missed your calling as a film reviewer.

Yerac, Saturday, 4 May 2019 02:59 (four years ago) link

I kind of felt for the other candidates that lost and were so overshadowed by Ocasio Cortez but it's just not the way the story turned out.

Yerac, Saturday, 4 May 2019 03:03 (four years ago) link

fun fact: filmmakers aren’t objective, nor should they try to be

Did the filmmakers just document those four candidates or did they follow a larger number and then trim in post? I love all four of them, and I'm psyched all four are running again.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 4 May 2019 21:18 (four years ago) link

Wait, Amy Vilela hasn't announced her plans yet, but the other three appear to be running again in 2020.

We chose to go on the climate offense with the #GreenNewDeal.

As a result, climate denial is now a losing position + we got GOP (incl #WheresMitch!) to finally admit that climate change is real + man-made.

Now it’s time to go after predatory lending.

Whose side is the GOP on? https://t.co/1nI4UQnEVB

as in, that didn't happen

or, to the extent that it did happen, it's victory of the pyrrhic style - maybe there's a handful of conservatives willing to admit, under scrutiny, that climate change is real and driven by GHG emissions from humans, but forgive me for my disbelief that they're going to do jack shit about it in the future

recriminations from the nitpicking woke (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 10 May 2019 20:05 (four years ago) link

Karl yes but the idea here is that by saying it, you MAKE it happen - now the ball's in their court. whether that does anything, who knows, but it's worth staking out the claim pre-emptively imo

Sometimes mischaracterizing your opponent's position is winning politics. God knows the GOP use this as their comprehensive approach to every position that doesn't follow their party line.

it's not even prevaricating, it's rhetoric imho - - - - if you're on the listserv of any campaign fighting anything it's full of stuff like this. it's how you make people feel like they're on the side that's going to win BUT that the other side are still being actively villainous and fighting tooth and nail to try and stop it, so they can't be complacent.

yeah, i mean...i see where everyone's coming from

i guess i read AOC's tweet as too much of a "mission accomplished, now the next thing" kind of statement. upon extensive further review that was projection on my part
