HANNIBAL on NBC seems amazing and therefore deserves it's own thread!

i'm watching it with my roommate and after we finished the penultimate episode i said "this show has everything! michael pitt eating his own face... everything."

Real want to rewatch this again right away, but am trying to let more time pass. Now that I know the shape of the characters, it will be different enough viewing.

And xpost above, I liked Alana a lot more in the 3rd season.

Yerac, Monday, 15 April 2019 13:15 (five years ago) link

rewatch revealed to me that i like alana throughout, although i think it's unfortunate they pair her with hannibal for little reason other than how gross and horrible it is (the dual sex scene however makes it worth it??? i think)

american bradass (BradNelson), Monday, 15 April 2019 13:17 (five years ago) link

there are a lot of things about season two i'd consider individually weak (some of the serial killers of the week especially sociopathic social worker vs. stable guy sewing dead people into horses; how it takes two full episodes to introduce mason (???)) but the writing and the long game the show is playing make them work

american bradass (BradNelson), Monday, 15 April 2019 13:20 (five years ago) link

i enjoyed thinking of hannibal as the showrunner of season two, throwing people who had absolutely nothing to do with each other (will/margot/mason) into a weird dramatic plot device about pregnancy. hannibal also casts himself in will graham's role at the very start of the season, so he's basically the writer/director/star of this particular vortex of killings anyway

american bradass (BradNelson), Monday, 15 April 2019 13:23 (five years ago) link

There should be absolutely no ??? about whether the dual sex scene was worth it.

sociopathic social worker vs. stable guy

I enjoyed that episode but I'm also a fan of Jeremy Davies doing Jeremy Davies types of characters

it's one of the finest scenes in the show

No one ever made out in a pool of blood did they?

Yerac, Monday, 15 April 2019 15:30 (five years ago) link

Hannibal’s response to the human muralist killer in the grain silo never fails to make me laugh

Killer: There is no god
Hannibal: Certainly not with that attitude

I was thinking the month of December for the holidays, but I guess that is far off. I think my spouse would get mildly worried if I rewatched it right after we finished.

I kind of can't believe but am thankful that EW listed every outfit Hannibal wore.

the first half of season three is exactly as wonderful as i remembered. i know this show is stylistic overflow all the time but the dialogue is straight up beautiful writing at this point

also the abigail fake-out got me all over again

i still havent finished watching the final season - there is a definite type of headspace i need to be in &. i just cant find it lately. i find it so confusing & spend the whole time like “huh”?

it bums me out. i need to try harder - maybe reattempt over the holidays

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 27 November 2019 18:09 (four years ago) link

I finally finished Wondefalls yesterday. I was meh on it, although the xtc theme is very good. And Alana is good in it.

^ This. It was grate but the further I went the more I felt like I was getting sucked into some of inescapable nihilistic void. Like, thanks for reflecting my everyday life so accurately, there, Hannibal, jeez.

is "first half of s3 >>>>>> second half of s3" a minority opinion/challop? cause that's still very much where I'm at

Simon H., Wednesday, 27 November 2019 20:11 (four years ago) link

i think most people agree with you but i think the quality is maintained throughout

american bradass (BradNelson), Wednesday, 27 November 2019 20:13 (four years ago) link

it's not like the adaptation of red dragon isn't also an inside-out dreamscape

american bradass (BradNelson), Wednesday, 27 November 2019 20:14 (four years ago) link

I am very much looking forward to luxuriating in it instead of being like 'wtf (giggle)' the entire time on first viewing.

Yerac, Wednesday, 27 November 2019 20:15 (four years ago) link

I am kind of glad I had no clue what the deal was with any character or what any of the framing was about.

Yerac, Wednesday, 27 November 2019 20:16 (four years ago) link

my issue w/ the back half of s3 is that the RD himself was no more compelling than any of the single-serving baddies from seasons past (also I've never been that fond of the finale tbh)

Simon H., Wednesday, 27 November 2019 20:22 (four years ago) link

the red dragon himself was pretty silly. But it didn't bother me.

Yerac, Wednesday, 27 November 2019 20:24 (four years ago) link

the finale is SO awesome

american bradass (BradNelson), Wednesday, 27 November 2019 20:31 (four years ago) link

i've read and seen both film adaptations of red dragon so i'll always find that story compelling. i guess armitage is no tom noonan but who is (and i still think he does pretty well)

american bradass (BradNelson), Wednesday, 27 November 2019 20:33 (four years ago) link

Supposedly, they started talking about a season 4 again.

I used to rep for Wonderfalls pretty hard, but last time I watched I had to admit it hasn't aged well. It does have a good premise, a mostly great cast, and a few stand-out eps, plus I think the second season could have been excellent. I wish Dhavernas had gotten more work.

rob, Wednesday, 27 November 2019 23:44 (four years ago) link

yeah, I remember seeing one episode when it was on tv and thinking it was something I would really like but as I was watching it this month (all episodes on youtube), it felt very dated.
