Why does Lady Gaga get a free pass from hipsters?

honestly all the ugly talk kinda makes me want to root for her in a way.

i read that rolling stone article she seemed okay.

like on one level i think her and peaches are pretty much total balls from a music perspective..but it bums me out that there seems to be a certain level of extra intense hate for them that comes from them being maybe not conventionally "pretty" but still casting themselves as sex symbols or sexy.

like people hate them for it or something, which seems like a pretty bummer misogynistic trip to me.

it is too bad that so many music nerds are turning to misogyny--used to be just about the least sexist group of people i can think of

I've been trying very hard not to make "lol she ugly" jokes because everyone is making them and it feels like a gross pile-on session. Sometimes I fail. Life goes on.

i really gained no sympathy from her through the rs piece, but the thought of her sad and alone and coked out and obsessed with fame.....i dunno, she's probably not a v. happy person despite the fact that this is what she wants to be doing.

pretty/ugly don't really matter to me, her look can be kinda cool i guess but you gotta back it up with songs, and her songs fucking blow.

Does anyone else remember being bombarded LG with full page ads on the myspace login screen for like a month and then huge banner ads after that?

Some folks are making it sound like she had some kind of organic home grown success. You don't get that kind of promo without a lot of corporate PR dollars behind you. It seems like they have spent a lot of money to push her image and her single into Clear Channel radio. Not that it is shocking or unusual for this to happen with pop music, but in her case it seemed really evident in a way that you wouldn't see with a Britney.

yeah...for like 6 months last year i thought of LG as a really failed major label push, MTV played "Just Dance" constantly but I didn't hear anything about here anywhere or think it was getting played much on the radio...then before i know it the song goes #1 and she's suddenly inescapable.

My own problem with Lady Gaga (and I'm assuming it's more or less ILM's problem, but I could be wrong) is that her music/image seems to be a lot less interesting than that of artists in the same vein and who haven't even come close to achieving the same commercial success.

I don't think she's ugly. Some of her photos look amazing. A lot of them don't. But the ones that don't aren't so much cases of "bad photo day" and more "I really don't like the visual you're consicously aiming for there."

yupyup, she is hella pretty and sometimes even dressed really interestingly. i haven't gone back and checked, but i feel like here was some love for lg on the rolling pop thread. why is barely anyone sticking up for her here? the tunes are really mostly not bad, and i like a few alot.

I just checked out the video for You Belong by Hercules and Love Affair and it is a shame that they did not have the kind of commercial success that Lady Gaga is having. Obviously they are being marketed differently and are aiming at different audiences but Hercules embodies much of the same content as is just some much more interesting and well executed.

I'd like to see something as blatantly commercial as LG but with deeper references. It would be cool to see those codes cross over into the mainstream.
