Voted for Gaucho. But Diana really should have been on there too.

does it look like i'm here (jon123), Friday, 12 April 2019 17:36 (five years ago) link

dang! didn't notice english beat before i voted for devo (just on account of my mood. cld just as easily gone for Prince, SD, X, or mayhap Get Happy)

where's the barbra streisand - Guilty album from 80? My mum had that

xp

Thus Spoke Darraghustra (Oor Neechy), Friday, 12 April 2019 17:53 (five years ago) link

that's the one. My mums 2 faves are Shirley Bassey and Barbra Streisand but she has some 80s Diana Ross albums and a greatest hits CD. None of that Supremes nonsense :D

My #1 and #2 aren't here (Undertones' Hypnotised and Numan's Telekon), which means my vote will go to... Prince! Or maybe The B-52's.

Bellshill Indie before it became cool

I love a bunch of stuff here but I'm going for the Units because I was surprised and delighted to see it on the list

(but also feeling kinda bad for not voting "Jane From Occupied Europe" or Bass Culture)

eyeroll at y'all talking shit about diana ross's 1980 record, it's a chic organization joint and it's fucking great

Some places list Slapp Happy's Acnalbasac Noom as a 1980 release. Bob Dylan's Saved would be another contender. I'd go with Doc at the Radar Station from this list. My favorite post-Trout-Mask Beefheart.

o. nate, Saturday, 13 April 2019 00:21 (five years ago) link

Acnalbasac Moon was indeed released in 1980, but recorded in 1974, and I personally wouldn't consider it eligible. Probably one of my top ten records of all time though.

Emperor Tonetta Ketchup (sleeve), Saturday, 13 April 2019 00:27 (five years ago) link

i can never decide whether i like casablanca moon or acnalbasac noom better

i don't think of it as a 1980 release but i also don't think of "the modern lovers" as a 1976 release

a couple more 1980 records i've discovered recently and want to recommend:

don slepian - the sea of bliss
carambolage - s/t

Jaki Liebowitz (rushomancy), Saturday, 13 April 2019 16:21 (five years ago) link

but i also don't think of "the modern lovers" as a 1976 release

why?

Thus Spoke Darraghustra (Oor Neechy), Saturday, 13 April 2019 20:55 (five years ago) link

Same reason, I assume.

tom d otm, i think of it as an archival release

never understood any love the pretenders got. Her voice is like nails on chalkboard to me

I listened to it there a couple of days ago and it still sounds great. The bonus tracks on the extended version of the album are fantastic too.

I'd vote Los Angeles if it was on here, can make a case that Crocodiles is underrated and highly influential.

I don't mind her voice and think they were a decent pop band in their prime, but 9.5 times out of 10 I'd rather listen to Blondie.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Tuesday, 16 April 2019 13:20 (five years ago) link

Remain In Light is top 20 all-time for me. Maybe top 10.

This is Talking Heads vs Colossal Youth, and they’re both amazing albums.

My vote goes to Colossal Youth because it was a more influential record to me, even if in reality it had no precedent or spiritual followers. It feels like a record outside of time and place and it’s pretty much perfect in its own terms.

Aqsak Maboul - Un peu de l'âme des bandits
Bauhaus - In the Flat Field
The Cramps - Songs the Lord Taught Us
Max Roach - M'Boom
Pylon - Gyrate

not sure how Remain In Light is in both the 1979 and 1980 polls, always thought of it as from 1980, voting for it in this one

Dan S, Thursday, 18 April 2019 00:21 (five years ago) link

ok I forgot that thread title was a mistake

that will be confusing when searching for the real 1979 poll

I voted for /Closer/, which I suppose makes it the 1980 album for people who don't care for 1980.

Weird, I thought I voted for it too. I think a lot of times I post my choice but forget to actually vote.

Tbf I may be the one who merely voted in spirit.
