Oh yeah, Blizzard of Ozz came out in 1980 too, didn't it? Still remains his best post-Sabbath work.

The Residents, "The Commercial Album" ftw.
― Do you like 70s hard rock with a guitar hero? (Tom D.), Friday, 12 April 2019 14:41 (five years ago) link
In the absence of Hassell/Eno, I'll probably end up going with Joy Division again. I like Peter Gabriel's III, but it feels less consistent to me than Closer.
― pomenitul, Friday, 12 April 2019 14:57 (five years ago) link
for me this is Remain in Light vs. Freedom of Choice vs. Crazy Rhythms
this is actually the toughest choice so far, I'm kinda weighing Side 1 of Remain in Light vs. Side 2 of Crazy Rhythms and the all-around catchiness of Freedom of Choice, I just find it hard to go against Remain in Light here
other albums I could've voted for: Black Sea by XTC (surprised not to see this one) and Neurovision by Telex (really great if you're into the Kraftwerk/YMO thing, plus it's got that ultra-dry Belgian-style humor to it). I also really like Welcome Plastics, Murdered by the Music by Yukihiro Takahashi, and that first Kurtis Blow album, plus isn't B-2 Unit from 1980? Damn this year was stacked!!!!

This being ILM, though, I can already predict that the Top 3 will be "1,000 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die" stalwarts such as Closer (which is a classic, but a very boring choice) and the overrated Remain in Light, as well as the patchy Gaucho.

Some places list Slapp Happy's Acnalbasac Noom as a 1980 release. Bob Dylan's Saved would be another contender. I'd go with Doc at the Radar Station from this list. My favorite post-Trout-Mask Beefheart.
― o. nate, Saturday, 13 April 2019 00:21 (five years ago) link
Acnalbasac Moon was indeed released in 1980, but recorded in 1974, and I personally wouldn't consider it eligible. Probably one of my top ten records of all time though.

i don't think of it as a 1980 release but i also don't think of "the modern lovers" as a 1976 release

This is Talking Heads vs Colossal Youth, and they’re both amazing albums.
My vote goes to Colossal Youth because it was a more influential record to me, even if in reality it had no precedent or spiritual followers. It feels like a record outside of time and place and it’s pretty much perfect in its own terms.

Yes, that was a surprise. Two out of three ain't bad, as Meat Loaf once sang.
