I don't really care for any of these albums tbh.

Diana Ross - Diana

Lots of favourites on this list but this is definitely The Feelies for me

willem, Friday, 12 April 2019 13:19 (five years ago) link

This being ILM, though, I can already predict that the Top 3 will be "1,000 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die" stalwarts such as Closer (which is a classic, but a very boring choice) and the overrated Remain in Light, as well as the patchy Gaucho.

willem, Friday, 12 April 2019 13:20 (five years ago) link

i voted colossal youth, it's how i'm feeling today

Jaki Liebowitz (rushomancy), Friday, 12 April 2019 13:29 (five years ago) link

Closer would have definitely got my vote at one time. I would just be a lot more likely to listen to Gabriel now. (Unknown Pleasures otoh...) Scary Monsters #3.

All along there is the sound of feedback (Sund4r), Friday, 12 April 2019 13:44 (five years ago) link

Oh yeah, Blizzard of Ozz came out in 1980 too, didn't it? Still remains his best post-Sabbath work.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Friday, 12 April 2019 14:08 (five years ago) link

Colossal Youth gets my vote. It is perfect and totally unique.

jmm, Friday, 12 April 2019 14:08 (five years ago) link

I own half of these! Voting for Comsat Angels. But there's still lots on my missing list:

Buggles - The Age Of Plastic
The Damned - The Black Album
The Durutti Column - The Return Of...
Fad Gadget - Fireside Favourites
Fire Engines - Lubricate Your Living Room
Vic Godard & Subway Sect - What's The Matter Boy?
Jon Hassell & Brian Eno - Possible Musics
Mo-dettes - The Story So Far
The Monochrome Set - Strange Boutique / Love Zombies
Mr. Partridge - Take Away - The Lure Of Salvage
Pauline Murray and The Invisible Girls - s/t
Colin Newman - A-Z
Pere Ubu - The Art Of Walking
The Psychedelic Furs - s/t
Roedelius - Selbstportrait II
The Saints - The Monkey Puzzle
Simple Minds - Empire and Dance
Skids - The Absolute Game
The Soft Boys - Underwater Moonlight (this would've been my top pick)
The Sound - Jeopardy
Stiff Little Fingers - Nobody's Heroes
Pete Townshend - Empty Glass
Toy Love - s/t
The Undertones - Hypnotised
V/A - The Blues Brothers soundtrack
V/A - From Brussels With Love
X - Los Angeles
X (Au) - X-Aspirations
XTC - Black Sea

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Friday, 12 April 2019 14:23 (five years ago) link

would've voted for Black Sea if it was an option, but let's go with Remain In light

to halve and half not (voodoo chili), Friday, 12 April 2019 14:29 (five years ago) link

The Residents, "The Commercial Album" ftw.

Do you like 70s hard rock with a guitar hero? (Tom D.), Friday, 12 April 2019 14:41 (five years ago) link

In the absence of Hassell/Eno, I'll probably end up going with Joy Division again. I like Peter Gabriel's III, but it feels less consistent to me than Closer.

pomenitul, Friday, 12 April 2019 14:57 (five years ago) link

for me this is Remain in Light vs. Freedom of Choice vs. Crazy Rhythms

this is actually the toughest choice so far, I'm kinda weighing Side 1 of Remain in Light vs. Side 2 of Crazy Rhythms and the all-around catchiness of Freedom of Choice, I just find it hard to go against Remain in Light here

other albums I could've voted for: Black Sea by XTC (surprised not to see this one) and Neurovision by Telex (really great if you're into the Kraftwerk/YMO thing, plus it's got that ultra-dry Belgian-style humor to it). I also really like Welcome Plastics, Murdered by the Music by Yukihiro Takahashi, and that first Kurtis Blow album, plus isn't B-2 Unit from 1980? Damn this year was stacked!!!!

Voted for Gaucho. But Diana really should have been on there too.

does it look like i'm here (jon123), Friday, 12 April 2019 17:36 (five years ago) link

dang! didn't notice english beat before i voted for devo (just on account of my mood. cld just as easily gone for Prince, SD, X, or mayhap Get Happy)

where's the barbra streisand - Guilty album from 80? My mum had that

xp

Thus Spoke Darraghustra (Oor Neechy), Friday, 12 April 2019 17:53 (five years ago) link

that's the one. My mums 2 faves are Shirley Bassey and Barbra Streisand but she has some 80s Diana Ross albums and a greatest hits CD. None of that Supremes nonsense :D

Thus Spoke Darraghustra (Oor Neechy), Friday, 12 April 2019 17:56 (five years ago) link

My #1 and #2 aren't here (Undertones' Hypnotised and Numan's Telekon), which means my vote will go to... Prince! Or maybe The B-52's.

I love a bunch of stuff here but I'm going for the Units because I was surprised and delighted to see it on the list

(but also feeling kinda bad for not voting "Jane From Occupied Europe" or Bass Culture)

eyeroll at y'all talking shit about diana ross's 1980 record, it's a chic organization joint and it's fucking great

Jaki Liebowitz (rushomancy), Friday, 12 April 2019 23:43 (five years ago) link

Some places list Slapp Happy's Acnalbasac Noom as a 1980 release. Bob Dylan's Saved would be another contender. I'd go with Doc at the Radar Station from this list. My favorite post-Trout-Mask Beefheart.

o. nate, Saturday, 13 April 2019 00:21 (five years ago) link

Acnalbasac Moon was indeed released in 1980, but recorded in 1974, and I personally wouldn't consider it eligible. Probably one of my top ten records of all time though.

Emperor Tonetta Ketchup (sleeve), Saturday, 13 April 2019 00:27 (five years ago) link

i can never decide whether i like casablanca moon or acnalbasac noom better

i don't think of it as a 1980 release but i also don't think of "the modern lovers" as a 1976 release

a couple more 1980 records i've discovered recently and want to recommend:

don slepian - the sea of bliss
carambolage - s/t

Jaki Liebowitz (rushomancy), Saturday, 13 April 2019 16:21 (five years ago) link

but i also don't think of "the modern lovers" as a 1976 release

why?

Thus Spoke Darraghustra (Oor Neechy), Saturday, 13 April 2019 20:55 (five years ago) link

Same reason, I assume.

Joy Division with only 1 vote! Shocking!

. (Michael B), Friday, 19 April 2019 00:20 (five years ago) link

Yes, that was a surprise. Two out of three ain't bad, as Meat Loaf once sang.

I can think of about 40 albums released in 1980 that mean more to me than Remain in Light, but whatever.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Friday, 19 April 2019 00:24 (five years ago) link

to ilx they are just demos for the real project
