Wow. I hope this isn't too limited, as I can't afford this at the moment!

Paul Ponzi, Thursday, 11 April 2019 15:05 (five years ago) link

looks like a regular release:

Emperor Tonetta Ketchup (sleeve), Thursday, 11 April 2019 15:27 (five years ago) link

That will do.

Meantime, Thighpaulsandra is apparently continuing the Live series:

Anyway I do think it's interesting how Hyde and McDowall are essentially reclaiming the mid 90's legacy in different ways. (The latter strictly via specific reissues, granted.)

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 21 April 2019 02:25 (four years ago) link

Also, Hyde allegedly has *another* archival release coming, an expanded version of The Gay Man's Guide To Safer Sex tracks:

https://www.discogs.com/Coil-The-Gay-Mans-Guide-To-Safer-Sex-2/release/13504410

Per a note appended:

Hello everyone, just to reassure you, this is an official release, licensed from Danny Hyde, released with his blessing, with HQ files + a CD version for those who like it like that. We can't wait for this to come out, when we get a release date we'll let you know. Thanks ! Ed @ Musique Pour La Danse

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 21 April 2019 02:41 (four years ago) link

I'm not sure whether a new Coil release being "licensed from Danny Hyde" necessarily makes it official at this point. Who knows where the rights lie.

the word dog doesn't bark (anagram), Sunday, 21 April 2019 06:16 (four years ago) link

Thought it was discussed upthread but no, at this point nothing is official that gets newly released or reissued. It’s all essentially a bootleg one way or another because there’s no central estate.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 21 April 2019 13:01 (four years ago) link

Exactly so, which is why I was surprised that you quoted that discogs note without comment.

the word dog doesn't bark (anagram), Sunday, 21 April 2019 13:09 (four years ago) link

*shrug* I just read it as authorized by Danny Hyde. Maybe he’s trying to leave Cold Spring behind.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 21 April 2019 15:24 (four years ago) link

three weeks pass...

In any event, that Gay Man's Guide release is now up for preorder:

Man there really is a new flood on, here's another live 'authorized bootleg' via Soleilmoon:

https://www.soleilmoon.com/shop/coil-porto/

“Porto” is the only authorized bootleg live recording of a Coil live performance.
Coil performed on 21 June 2003 at the Casa da Música Festival in Porto, Portugal. Present on stage that night were Peter Christopherson, Ossian Brown and Thighpaulsandra. Jhonn Balance was not part of the lineup, possibly due to his drug and alcohol addictions. Because of his absence the music on this recording is entirely instrumental. The show was also notable for being Ossian’s last appearance with Coil.
This edition is manufactured and released in Portugal, and is distributed in North America by Soleilmoon. Royalties will be paid to the remaining artists involved in the concert.
Tracklist
1. Blue Rats (18:14)
2. Triple Sun (12:56)
3. Radio Westin (13:32)
4. Drip Drop (10:04)
5. The First Five Minutes After Death (11:24)

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 12 May 2019 17:38 (four years ago) link

interesting, as far as I can recall that show has always been MP3-sourced (even the CDRs), wonder if this is an improvement

Another 8 Threshold Archive CDs

https://www.soleilmoon.com/shop/threshold-archives-series-2/

I can see Restitution of decayed intelligence, blue, and I think moons milk? No track listings though.

The CDs are pretty cheap but postage to the UK is more expensive than the discs so I’m going to hold off ordering for now

I am using your worlds, Tuesday, 14 May 2019 20:29 (four years ago) link

thanks for the heads up there, I really appreciate it

Emperor Tonetta Ketchup (sleeve), Tuesday, 14 May 2019 20:37 (four years ago) link

(guessing from L-R and top-bottom that these are Moon's Milk, Blue, Worship The Glitch, Protection, Foxtrot, Astral Disaster, Porto, and Restitution)

Emperor Tonetta Ketchup (sleeve), Tuesday, 14 May 2019 20:40 (four years ago) link

I had protection on repeat earlier this week before I heard about this, no idea what the cover art looked like, so if there is a whole calf related stuff I’m stoked

But stoked for everything really

*calf = cd of

I am using your worlds, Tuesday, 14 May 2019 20:48 (four years ago) link

whole calf seems highly coil-appropriate

valet doberman (Jon not Jon), Tuesday, 14 May 2019 20:50 (four years ago) link

yeah Protection is the grey cubist thing on the top right - that's the 10" but there's also a CD with different material

I thought the one 3rd from left on bottom was Porto but that's a separate release as Ned noted the other day, not sure what this one is

Emperor Tonetta Ketchup (sleeve), Tuesday, 14 May 2019 20:50 (four years ago) link

All kinda crazy clearing decks happening here.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 14 May 2019 20:55 (four years ago) link

3rd from the left on the bottom looks like the bonus disc from moons milk iirc

They were all individual paintings but it looks similar

thx for the info! (since the mailing list went to facebook i'm out of touch sometimes)

StanM, Wednesday, 15 May 2019 06:38 (four years ago) link

Don't understand why these aren't being sold separately, seems like a strange choice to bundle them like this

Paul Ponzi, Wednesday, 15 May 2019 13:28 (four years ago) link

last time it was a hassle to track them all down, this is much easier (and cheaper)

maybe they made more this time? let's hope.

are the Threshold Archive series discs on the archive.org site? I know all the official stuff is there but haven't checked in a while

Emperor Tonetta Ketchup (sleeve), Wednesday, 15 May 2019 13:53 (four years ago) link

maybe they made more this time?

Given the bundles offered, seems like. Anyway placed my order for that and Porto this morning.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 15 May 2019 14:01 (four years ago) link

This all still seems a bit odd. Should they be getting profit from this? Educate me if I'm wrong. I thought the website said royalties went to surviving members. I'd love more Coil out there but this is just more bootlegs, right?

kraudive, Thursday, 16 May 2019 01:58 (four years ago) link

I mean, they say as much on the Soleilmoon listing:

These are NOT QUALITY CONTROLLED Coil products. They should not be regarded as such. Coil was Geff Rushton (John Balance) and Peter Christopherson (Sleazy). Without the two of them, there is no Coil and thus no official Coil product. Threshold Archives was begun by Peter Christopherson to empty the archives of unreleased material and make music easily affordable for fans. Do not spend large amounts for these items. While Peter collaborated on the tracklists, the artwork was never finalized, and Coil was much more than simply the music contained in the product. In Peter’s words, he expressed his desire for a “case solid enough to stand up on its own” for the set so there may or may not be a construction kit forthcoming. Peter’s share of the proceeds will once again be donated to the SET Foundation and as before, payments will be issued to other contributors and survivors.

given that the discs are six bucks each, this seems reasonable, particularly when taken in the context of the "Product Description" as a whole.

xp!

love living 2 hours from Portland/Soleilmoon, the discs arrived today.

full tracklists are up now on Discogs, looks like some great extras (Journey To Avebury!):

oh and also catalog numbers 17-18 and 21-22 are missing, so there are probably some still to come, possibly doubles as noted in the Discogs comments

Nice -- looks like mine will arrive early next week, just got the initial delivery confirmation.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 18 May 2019 01:43 (four years ago) link

holy moly this 60-minute version of Mayhem Accelerator is certainly something to behold

And the new Threshold Archives and Porto now in hand. Oh frabjous day, etc.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 23 May 2019 02:01 (four years ago) link

"Heavens Blade (John Balance Vox Demo)" from Swanyard is superb, I'm skipping around on first listen but wow this is just great

Ambient Police (sleeve), Tuesday, 4 June 2019 03:32 (four years ago) link

it's nice that all of these recent archive releases are very tightly focused on specific eras/phases of the band

Ambient Police (sleeve), Tuesday, 4 June 2019 03:33 (four years ago) link

Yeah for a situation where it seems there's no coordination it generally worked out pretty well.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 4 June 2019 04:02 (four years ago) link

And yet another "official re-release" on the way:

So strange to re-read this thread after all these years. The "little one" I mention in my posts is now a 15-year-old about to finish her freshman year of high school. Time flies.

Coil live 6th April 2003 – All Tomorrow’s Parties – Camber Sands, UK

Found in a box of old DV tapes, here's a video that Sleazy gave me permission to film from the side of the stage during their performance at ATP. Edit/sync by Mika Hallbäck Vuorenpää. https://t.co/XOb08UPVkA pic.twitter.com/63EjnxpaID

StanM, Friday, 7 June 2019 08:38 (four years ago) link

cool, two days after "...And The Ambulance Died In His Arms"

in other news, Swanyard has some high points but a LOT of track duplication. Disappointing overall, and probably should have been a single CD, but hey why not release everything even if it's multiple versions (some tracks are repeated three times).

Ambient Police (sleeve), Friday, 7 June 2019 14:32 (four years ago) link

"No really, THIS one is the variant!"

Ned Raggett, Friday, 7 June 2019 14:47 (four years ago) link

Oh cool, I was at that ATP performance. I mostly remember Balance repeatedly asking them to turn the volume up.

Ward Fowler, Friday, 7 June 2019 14:49 (four years ago) link

I was at that ATP and saw that performance.
I had no idea who Coil were at the time and couldn't decide if I was meant to find it funny or not.
