hope they keep up this super-deluxe reissue series! there's just sex and death, fidelity, and time was gigantic left from the pre-2000 era...

hot take but time was gigantic is his best work.

only one I haven't really heard (it's available digitally now but I kinda want to wait for the reissue)... I know Vigil from Someone Else's Party is a reworked version of For Rachel and I love that song so

pretty much every song on the album was repurposed at some point or another. i had a theory some years back that it was the album he had been trying to make all throughout the 90s. it came out so well that he just continued to borrow from its ideas for the next decade or so.

Vini's birthday today, apparently.
Dave Haslam just posted this on Twitter:
"I know a number of people worry about Vini's health. I just popped round to his house with a birthday card and we had a brief conversation. He's looking good and doing Ok and we made plans for a proper catch-up soon."

today is indeed his birthday! nice update, thank you for sharing.

I saw in the liner notes on the new Idiot Savants LP pressing, that Someone Else's Party is next up for the vinyl press. Gotta get them all!

also that link doesn't work for me.

Oh, sorry - hadn't realised the link hadn't worked.
Was just pleased to see Vini holding a guitar (I guess I'd felt a horror that maybe he couldn't?)
Apparently there's a new single but, I think, an old track and an unreleased track??

The same user has also uploaded another, longer video where vini's playing is a little less atonal. I only have the crappy mobile link thing for it though:

Absolutely brilliant clips!
I, too, fear the worst news whenever Andy sees this topic revived. But he is still here. It brings tears to my eyes to see him play, truly. He has had so many important things to say and the fact that the ability to use his musical voice was all but taken away form him is one of the least fair occurrences that I can remember. There is a lot of dust on the headstock of that Stratocaster in the clip that Nick posted. This is so discouraging. Vini is so brave though, for allowing himself to have video taken when his chops are not what they used to be. It is still the beautiful music that only he is capable of making.
Very bittersweet to see, but I am very glad that I was able to see them all the same. Thank you for posting, dj.

every single bedroom pop album from the past decade sounds at least a little bit like durutti
― la table sur la table (voodoo chili), Monday, 16 November 2020 18:15 (three years ago) link
The original 3600 LP sleeves were made of coarse sandpaper (similar to the Situationist book Mémoires), designed to scratch LPs which were placed on either side of it.

can confirm. source: my own music. it happens even when i'm not trying.
also enoch, not to be a total downer, but there is a possibility of that being the case because of vin's world view at that time. still a funny gag, especially if he was planning on making another record.

poor guy, but he sounds to be dealing with the situation about as best as could be hoped for. glad he's housed and seems to have some people who care about him.

I was shocked to hear a Durutti Column song on THE BEAR a few weeks ago. I remember that he asked fans for financial help some years back when he was on the verge of becoming unhoused
― beamish13, Saturday, 22 July 2023 00:14 (nine months ago) link
That scene in The Bear was so perfect too, hope he gets/got a good wedge for that.
― MaresNest, Saturday, 22 July 2023 10:00 (nine months ago) link
According to Spotify he has 340,000 monthly listeners. Hopefully that’s enough to give him financial security.
But, yeah a poignant read. That line about gusts of wind blowing his words away is so vivid. Never knew about his early life on the streets or suicide attempts.
― Dan Worsley, Saturday, 22 July 2023 11:07 (nine months ago) link
Always wondered what he got paid for having his music in "Jerry Maguire." That was a pretty major film, Tom Cruise for pete's sake.
― henry s, Saturday, 22 July 2023 12:50 (nine months ago) link
Pretty shocking tbh. Amazed he survived, never mind made music, never mind that it was so wonderful xp
― xyzzzz__, Saturday, 22 July 2023 12:52 (nine months ago) link
He should write a book. His instagram posts are great. Very political and very strongly worded. Doesn’t seem to have lost any energy on that front. And if this interview is any sign he has a lot to say.
