Spring didn't really happen this year, did it?

I always tell myself not to book the quiet carriage because the cuntery annoys me more than if i was just in a regular carriage but i haven't been on a train in a while and sometimes i'm a pie-eyed optimist

this is exactly right and limmy was just moaning about this on a recent stream

Spring didn't really happen this year, did it?

What's "spring"? Does that season even exist in this state? :(

The Colour of Spring (deethelurker), Tuesday, 9 April 2019 20:49 (five years ago) link

Every once in a while, we have a very nice spring. Not this year though.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Tuesday, 9 April 2019 20:53 (five years ago) link

Yeah, I had such hopes today was going to be a rainy, cloudy, dark and dreary day, but alas that was not meant to be. Alexa, play "Only Happy When it Rains".

BTW, is there a thread for RATIONAL anger? Because I've got a lot of righteous anger going on inside my head right now.

The Colour of Spring (deethelurker), Saturday, 13 April 2019 17:37 (five years ago) link

Funny. It is very rainy in ATX today.

BTW, is there a thread for RATIONAL anger?

since 99.999% of rational anger is caused by other humans, the disgusting savages thread usually served this purpose.

two weeks pass...

I'm not one to complain about spoilers for the most part, but the volume of Game of Thrones spoilers on Twitter right now is making it unreadable, and it's pissing me off.

i have to holdout on Endgame til tomorrow night & GOT til Tuesday, I’m throwing my phone in the trash

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 29 April 2019 05:21 (four years ago) link

This is just going to get worse and worse over the next 4 weeks, isn't it? We have to wait a couple of days for Chinese subs too, so the whole first bit of each week is this silly game. Last week there was even a spoiler on one of the non-GOT threads on here.

when local businesses run those "bring this flyer and 15% goes to [your kid's public school]" promotions. I guess it's ultimately harmless if local pizza shop gets a little extra business and the school receives an extra $387 as a result, but it grosses me out on a level I can't quite explain.

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Monday, 29 April 2019 22:16 (four years ago) link

dunno man that seems like a win-win to me. drive customers to a locally owned business that then supports the school! at least that's how it tends to work at my kid's school.

wmlynch, Monday, 29 April 2019 22:54 (four years ago) link

especially because we're fucked for other kinds of funding; otherwise i agree with you that raising money to support schooling is absurd and dystopian.

wmlynch, Monday, 29 April 2019 22:55 (four years ago) link

As long as it's local and not Chik-Fil-A. I live in the bluest county in the universe (seemslike) and yet somehow the PTA fundraisers for my daughter's former school were invariably Chik-Fil-Fuckin-A.

Still don't know if it was just lazy/convenient or if some conservative parent engineered it as a dog-whistle or a fuck you to her liberal neighbors.

Pontius Pilates (Ye Mad Puffin), Monday, 29 April 2019 23:52 (four years ago) link

ah we have a local burger spot that is also owned by parents that does regular fundraisers, and they pitch in at the school a lot. what you've described makes me rationally angry.

I don't normally say anything if someone's sitting in my reserved seat on a packed train, mostly because I don't like talking to people, but also because am I really more deserving of a seat just because I booked on a website that happened to allocate me a seat number?

But this week I have done something to my knee, so y/day I asked the guy in my seat if he'd mind moving, and he turned out to be travelling with the person next to him (tbh if I'd realised I might not have asked) so they both moved, and someone else sat in the window seat and remarked "well I guess I can sit here until someone with a booking turns up" while I sat in my aisle seat.

Then someone with the booking for the window seat turned up, I got up to let him out and of course he didn't budge, the new arrival sat in my aisle seat and insisted her seat number was the aisle seat, and when I said "well I don't mind if you'd like the aisle seat but you've got a booking for one of these seats and I've got one for the other and that gentleman already told me he didn't have a booking" everyone just stared blankly ahead and didn't move.

And today I am eating all the ibuprofen and my left leg still feels like a goddamn tree trunk, so I declare them both terrible people, even though I do admit I might be the terrible person for asking at all - and I'm sure ILX will let me know about it.

It's not irrationql anger but more than that. It enrages me when people just leave the things piling up. Then pay. And only then start putting'em away. Ffs YOU ARE HOLDING UP THE QUEUE THAT WAY. ARGH

nathom, Wednesday, 1 May 2019 13:06 (four years ago) link

Spacecadet, you are not a horrible person. Ffs you paid for it. Even w/o an injury, you are entitled to ask'em to move. Jfc.

I most certainly do.

Ned Caligari (Tom D.), Wednesday, 1 May 2019 14:04 (four years ago) link

Once me and Alex were sat on a booked seat and when the lady realised he was on verge of an autistic meltdown, she offered to sit on another seat. I said thanks and we are getting off at the next stop anyway. But I certainly wouldn't have thought less of her if she'd have insisted on the seat. it's the rules of the game - but she was a class act.

calzino, Wednesday, 1 May 2019 14:11 (four years ago) link

"Ffs you paid for it."

Well, that's the thing, I didn't pay any extra for it - I paid for a seat, which I happened to do online, sufficiently far in advance that it also gave me a seat booking. And I do feel v entitled turfing someone out of a seat on a train with 0 free seats and people crammed in like sardines down all the aisles and in the door sections.

Imagine if we could actually have trains with seating room for, say, 95% of the passengers? Like, maybe not 100% but enough that anyone standing has some kind of railing to hold on to and nobody has to be pressed up against anyone else and you don't have to worry you won't be able to reach the door in time.

a passing spacecadet, Wednesday, 1 May 2019 14:19 (four years ago) link

But I'm also interested that everyone else has said it's OK, so I'll bear that in mind in future! And it's true that if I was sat somewhere and someone said "that's my seat" I would move and not begrudge them it - well, maybe a little grudging if I were in a plaster cast and had 16 suitcases or something.

a passing spacecadet, Wednesday, 1 May 2019 14:23 (four years ago) link

You didn't pay any extra but you still paid for it. I suppose it's dependent on how long the journey is, you might not want to make a song and dance if you're not going to be on the train very long anyway, but when I'm going to and from Glasgow I'm not going to let some fucker who turns up on a wing and prayer sit in a seat I specified I wanted to sit on.

Ned Caligari (Tom D.), Wednesday, 1 May 2019 14:25 (four years ago) link

yeah, like when I used book seats from Leeds to Newquay with a disabled co-traveller I'm actually ready to pull out a blade on anyone with designs on my seats.

calzino, Wednesday, 1 May 2019 14:29 (four years ago) link

I seriously don't understand the way trains are booked here. Why are they constantly over sold? It drives me fucking nuts.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Wednesday, 1 May 2019 14:33 (four years ago) link

And I'm sorry but if I have a ticket with a seat number on it and someone in that seat doesn't I'm getting the damn seat.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Wednesday, 1 May 2019 14:34 (four years ago) link

I don't read reddit but I do love that subreddit called Stolen Seats about this very thing.

People suck, don't ever give up your assigned seat. On planes, I always have people trying to sit in my seat because I usually have exit row or aisle. It's amazing how people won't get up. I look nice, but bitch, you don't know me, get the fuck up.

Yerac, Wednesday, 1 May 2019 15:30 (four years ago) link

Although I once did voluntarily give up my seat once because some 6'7" dude was crammed in the back and making noise and I felt bad and it was a short flight. I was also hoping to get bumped up.

Yerac, Wednesday, 1 May 2019 15:32 (four years ago) link

the thing about the assigned seats is: if you are the one with an assigned seat asking someone to move you are in the right but feel like an uptight jerk, and if you are the one sitting in someone's assigned seat you are in the wrong but get to feel morally superior about how above it all you are.

We were never Breeting Borting (President Keyes), Wednesday, 1 May 2019 15:33 (four years ago) link

The only thing you should do if someone is in your seat is make them pay you in cash for however much you think their ask is worth That usually gets them up.

Flip side is when we make one of our rare forays to the minor league baseball park, and the usher says "Oh, just sit down there in one of the front rows. Those season-ticket holders never show up, and if they do, you can always move."

And I'm just frozen on the inside, going "Please don't make me do that. Please don't make me do that."

pplains, Wednesday, 1 May 2019 16:23 (four years ago) link

I remember going to Lollapalooza 1992 with a crew of people and between us we had 3 good tickets and 12 lawn ones. We were able to sneak all 15 of us up to the three good seats, but as it got later in the day people kept showing up and kicking us out of their assigned seats and we ended up with five people sitting on top of each other in each of the three seats hoping not to get kicked out until the lights would go down.

joygoat, Wednesday, 1 May 2019 18:11 (four years ago) link

Lollapalooza 1995 was the opposite. Hole left the stage and the whole front section emptied out before Sonic Youth.

OMG, thanks for reminding me of this one pet peeve of mine! I try to be above-it-all and not mind when the microwave display is left at a seemingly random amount of seconds, but it still irks.

BTW, I'm very rationally pissed off at Ye Mad Puffin's daughter's former school's PTA for opting for that Hate Chicken outfit for their fundraisers, even though I can honestly say I was one of the people who thought Hate Chicken had given up on their hatred when they said they had back in ca. 2012.

I like Sonic Youth's music but they are tiresome as fuh live. I think I have left 3-4 shows before their set or after 1-2 songs (I was even with ian one time where we both decided it wasn't worth staying a set change for them to come on because we timed it late and missed Dinosaur Jr and oh well.)

Yerac, Thursday, 2 May 2019 01:38 (four years ago) link

well there's the problem you didn't stay long enough. I do remmeber them closing that Lollapalozza with the face melting Diamond Sea and then encoring w Schizophrenia / White Cross / Teenage Riot. Lotsa cool lights too.

I also sort of remember the whole rest of that lineup sucking except Jesus Lizard

oh, i have never been to a lollapalooza. This was from seeing Sonic Youth so many other times and deciding it wasn't ever worth it again.
