would you rather eat it with or without him playing, a la Chico Marx?

a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 9 April 2019 02:07 (five years ago) link

i can see myself putting up with a lot of shit for $23m a year, but chris davis has already made $120m. is he really prepared to be a laughingstock for the not-quite four years left on his deal?

mookieproof, Tuesday, 9 April 2019 02:26 (five years ago) link

Is that just too much money (another $70M) for one team to eat?

not sure what the alternative is. best thing they can do right now is set him up as a hot dog vendor - that's the most value they're gonna get out of him right now

frogbs, Tuesday, 9 April 2019 02:33 (five years ago) link

Davis 0-5 tonight but hit the ball hard several times; maybe I'm a ridiculous optimist but I see that as a big improvement of the guy we've been seeing who looked frankly scared to swing.

5-5 so far. I'll take it! This is the way this season was supposed to work. You throw all these no-names on the field and you see if any of them can play.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Tuesday, 9 April 2019 03:09 (five years ago) link

they've now allowed 36 homers (in 12.5 games), 13 more than any other team

back on pace for 108 losses

1-10 at home

pitching staff was at 6.21 ERA and -1.4 fWAR before giving up 12 runs tonight

mookieproof, Tuesday, 23 April 2019 02:38 (five years ago) link

I really don't understand why we can't have better pitchers than these. Aren't there just a lot of pitchers floating around jobless who are better than this? Isn't that literally the definition of what it means when your staff as a whole is underwater in WAR?

Guayaquil (eephus!), Tuesday, 23 April 2019 02:43 (five years ago) link

I swear somebody said that at one point in Ball Four.

the 2019 baltimore orioles: redefining replacement value

With that Yonder Alonso home run, the Orioles have now given up 72 home runs this year, a major league record for March/April. The old record coming into this season was....50.

— Chuck Garfien (@ChuckGarfien) April 30, 2019

Bad loss but you know, most of the time you give Mychal Givens a 2-run lead you're gonna get the win.

Still enjoying this team! Cashner and Bundy have been pitching pretty well for a month, and -- John Means, who's John Means? Rotation definitely looks better than it did a month ago.

Orioles have 6 regulars with negative defensive WAR right now which has got to be some kind of record. But

Guayaquil (eephus!), Tuesday, 21 May 2019 14:23 (four years ago) link

I forgot what I was going to say after that "But" so maybe I'll just let it stand.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Tuesday, 21 May 2019 14:23 (four years ago) link

Givens is excellent except against NYY.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Tuesday, 21 May 2019 14:40 (four years ago) link

why

Keon Broxton has been traded to Baltimore for $500,000 in international bonus pool money. #Mets

— New York Mets (@Mets) May 22, 2019

mookieproof, Wednesday, 22 May 2019 18:44 (four years ago) link

I like this guy but boy can he not hit right now. Maybe Chris Davis can give him a talk about "what to do when you're slugging under .200" -- Davis seems to be finding his way back to replacement level, maybe Broxton can too.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Wednesday, 22 May 2019 19:37 (four years ago) link

i don't mind them picking him up, but (the authority to spend) $500,000 in bonus pool money is actually useful! especially for a rebuilding team! there's no reason to give that up for a below-replacement quad-a player who'd already been dfa'd

two months pass...

Somehow the "guess the ORIOLES final record" thread has become the Orioles thread but I wish to resist it! So let me just say: 12-12 for the month of July, lots of good performance from the rest of the leagues cast-off no-names, feeling good about this team + Mountcastle and sure, why, not, Dillon Tate the rest of the way (chatter seems to be almost silent about the rest of the team being traded, we'll see)

just not fair, give the Stanks' win total an asterisk
