There's such a big difference between these 90s and 00s polls - both obviously full of great tracks but the energy level in the 00s was way lower.

"what's a girl to do" would be nothing without the frisson created by the rub of the garish funky scribble of the lead against the delicate atmosphere laid underneath. it's one of those things where the hook is so iconic and attention-grabbing that it has to phase in and out of taste as time passes, it's not subtle enough to fit in everywhere, but that's the case with most tracks that become anthems

I’m up for an update some time in the future. Maybe a 10 year anniversary in 2022 :P See which tracks stood the passing of a decade and which ones are deemed the new classics by ILM.

I assume results would be quite different since many posters from the time have disappeared and there’s many newcomers and lurkers. We’d probably get more ballots in these time.

Also who knows what could happen in three years. If I’m not around anymore but the forum is still standing please carry on with the 10 year anniversary update either way.

These lists change a lot over the years, I recently ran into this "all time top 500 dance tracks" from 2003 (some listeners poll by a German? UK? radio station I believe), and while these are all pretty much canonical classics, no doubt such a list would look completely different now.

any time I see lists like that I think back to this good oral history of Berlin techno book (Der Klang der Familie -- has an English translation, would recommend) and at the point where trance-like things are starting to happen all the late 80s guys seem disgusted

With the exception of the occasional Tiga or Roger Sanchez or later Basement Jaxx track that list feels way more 1999 than 2003, I'd have expected more golden age Paris house in there by 2003 for one thing.

Skipping through it a bit more, that list of 500 is of course way too full of then-current trance hits that have really not endured but if you strip out the 2002-2003 material it’s pretty solid list of mainly house classics.
