she's basically an art school kid that made it big doing her own thing and comes off as such which is why that crowd goes for it.
whether or not you like her it's stupid to make the aguilera / spears comparison

or use "hipsters" in 2009

but whatever.

this is totally wrong i think. she doesnt really have those fans except for that small niche of ppl already into chart pop. her main fanbase is, & i dont mean this in a particularly condescending way although it might sound like i do, women who go clubbing & liked sex & the city a whole lot. its getting young yuppie love, basically, at least from the ladies. its popular shit. i dont really know any hip trendy folks who are into it except as, like, an ironic thing

like, i dont think anyone is convinced by her 'art school' thing -- i dont think you're supposed to be convinced by it?? i think her fans see it as like, her 'hobby' or as an affect, not as an identity

so i was in the record store today and started reading abt her in rolling stone (i am genuinely interested because whatever is causing her popularity it ain't the songs). got as far as the part about her dropping out of nyu and living alone in manhattan, where she would get coke delivered and then do her hair in makeup in a mirror for hours at a time.

i find her interesting because she's become famous without being particularly good looking. until she arrived, the pop world was pretty straightforward in terms of the importance placed upon one's looks. it doesn't seem to matter with her, which i guess is either a marketing triumph, or a testament to her abilities as a performer, or a bit of both, i suppose.

I think deej is otm here, at least in my hometown people only listen to her because they play her at clubs. So it's the sort of shit I've heard my friends play while dressing up before going to the club. I haven't met noone that really knows her backstory or owns her record. I feel truly sorry for you peeps who apparently seem to deal with listening to her music in a daily basis and in different environments.

you should qualify whether you mean importance placed on looks specifically in regard to female pop stars. or i'm just going to assume you think T-Pain is dreamy.

the funny thing about LG isn't so much that she's terrible-looking as that she tries for these ridiculous fashion statements that generally only really gorgeous women can get away with

yes, here we have Britney as straightforward popstar:

GIS for "40+ Israeli transvestite" pulls up a lot of British transvestites/cross-dressers. And Rudy Giuliani.

honestly all the ugly talk kinda makes me want to root for her in a way.

i read that rolling stone article she seemed okay.

like on one level i think her and peaches are pretty much total balls from a music perspective..but it bums me out that there seems to be a certain level of extra intense hate for them that comes from them being maybe not conventionally "pretty" but still casting themselves as sex symbols or sexy.

like people hate them for it or something, which seems like a pretty bummer misogynistic trip to me.

dude come on dont be such a pussy here...you don't know people irl who wear ridiculous outfits they can't pull off and think really highly of themselves even though they're ugly as fuck and have no good qualities? those are the most annoying people!!

makeitstop (k3vin k.), Thursday, 11 June 2009 16:42 (fourteen years ago) link

I've been trying very hard not to make "lol she ugly" jokes because everyone is making them and it feels like a gross pile-on session. Sometimes I fail. Life goes on.

1899 Horsey Horseless (HI DERE), Thursday, 11 June 2009 16:43 (fourteen years ago) link

i really gained no sympathy from her through the rs piece, but the thought of her sad and alone and coked out and obsessed with fame.....i dunno, she's probably not a v. happy person despite the fact that this is what she wants to be doing.

pretty/ugly don't really matter to me, her look can be kinda cool i guess but you gotta back it up with songs, and her songs fucking blow.

IRL? not really, actually. i don't hang out with like blog fashion MIA type fans and shit.

i see hott ppl wear shit that they can't pull off, that no human being can pull off too...

i'm just saying the "ugly" thing keeps coming up in a way that seems weird to me...

but anyway my opinion was so obvious it was pretty much a challop to begin with as max and blueski pointed out right away anyway.

I think here is a good point for me to re-post my kid story from the Rolling Pop thread:

"Yesterday in the car ride home from daycare, "Poker Face" came on and my four-year-old said, "I hate this song. When she says pa-pa-pa-poker I think she is going to poke me wif a screwdriber." First, I had never heard him use the word hate. Second, I'm a fan of the song but I kinda think his description tells a deeper story of why many are not.

Does anyone else remember being bombarded LG with full page ads on the myspace login screen for like a month and then huge banner ads after that?

Some folks are making it sound like she had some kind of organic home grown success. You don't get that kind of promo without a lot of corporate PR dollars behind you. It seems like they have spent a lot of money to push her image and her single into Clear Channel radio. Not that it is shocking or unusual for this to happen with pop music, but in her case it seemed really evident in a way that you wouldn't see with a Britney.

Enter nothing in the dialog and click 'OK' (Display Name), Thursday, 11 June 2009 17:21 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah...for like 6 months last year i thought of LG as a really failed major label push, MTV played "Just Dance" constantly but I didn't hear anything about here anywhere or think it was getting played much on the radio...then before i know it the song goes #1 and she's suddenly inescapable.
