NEIL YOUNG ARCHIVES BOX: IT'S REALLY HAPPENING

I can't think of any act I like more than Neil Young that I've lost track of more. That awesome streak of Le Noise, Americana and Psychedelic Pill seemed really promising - and that was only six years ago! - but now I don't know what the hell is going on.

the archives stuff is consistently great

as far as studio stuff, the only thing you've missed is Peace Trail which is really quirky and cool

Promise of the Real sucks as a band

Don't Be Denied off CSNY 74 is really great

I really like the Neil stuff on the csny 74 set, but yeah, the rest is pretty skippable. Pretty bloated.

tylerw, Friday, 5 April 2019 13:40 (five years ago) link

man them huffing and puffing through "Long Time Gone" in a football stadium is like almost cliche "death of the 60s" shit...

cool to hear Pushed it Over the End

Revolution Blues is surprisingly tuff, Crosby must've stopped wetting himself about that song

re: Oceanside/Countryside, there was one more step before it became Comes A Time, which is the rejected title (and art) of 'Give To The Wind':

wow i've never heard of that, thanks!

Comes a Time (which is a good album for sure)...but it's funny, I sometimes wonder in a couple cases if there were times when Neil was running low on cash...not that they are uninspired albums at all, but Comes a Time and Harvest Moon for how contrary he is usually those both seemed like times when he was like..okay we need something people are going to like - not a problem

i like the give to the wind cover a lot better than comes a time

one time I got invited to dinner by a Mormon couple & I went & they played Comes a Time

Comes A Time (the song) is one of my all-time Neil faves

“I have been talking with our team about releasing all [the albums] here at NYA exclusively in 2020,” he writes. “Initially, these albums would not be released as CDs or vinyl. Eventually they may, but they would be here at NYA exclusively in the meantime and there are quite a few of them.”

How are they still so bad at this?

uuuuggghhhhhh

I'm guessing they'll all get released, but you have to spend hours digging through the virtual filing cabinets on his streaming site to find them.

does anyone have a rough idea of how many people are paying members of the NYA? is it like...10,000 people or so? 50K?

"I want you to hear the music but I also want to present it to you in the clunkiest, most inconvenient, most unappealing way possible. Come to think of it you are probably better off just listening to the boots."

chr1sb3singer, Tuesday, 12 November 2019 16:57 (four years ago) link

in order for you to hear the pristine sound, i am releasing this on NYA so a friend can record it off of their computer and then send it to you after converting it to .wmv for no particular reason

so long, Neil

i think the NYA has around 20,000 subscribers.
pretty much a nonstory, lol. "hmm it never occurred to me to release these things i've been talking about releasing for 25 years! i'll get right on it!"

tylerw, Tuesday, 12 November 2019 17:10 (four years ago) link

Maybe if we all write personal letters to Neil explaining that we'd like to pay to hear some of his music before we die, he'll speed up

i haven't been on NYA in a while, not since the brief period when it was free.

i see they have stuck with the whole Replicate the look and feel of a file cabinet, on a computer screen, concept

at home in the alternate future, (Karl Malone), Tuesday, 12 November 2019 17:25 (four years ago) link

personally i wish they would go even further back and replicate the look and feel of Winnipeg in the early 1960s, with all the people around town telling stories about Neil, and you can walk around the local venues of the time and see the Squires play. perhaps you could then talk to Neil and join his band, and then play music with Neil for 35+ years as his best friend and songwriting partner. all in NYA!

at home in the alternate future, (Karl Malone), Tuesday, 12 November 2019 17:28 (four years ago) link

note to self in the year 2065: if you're reading this, maybe it's possible to do what you just wrote above. go check NYA and see if you can patch in an update that does all that, accessible only by looking at small hole cut into the back of the 2019 NYA's file cabinet.

From the guy who brought us such classics as "Archives II will be out in June, 2014" and "Time Fades Away will never be released on CD."

it's just like — don't think too hard about it, neil. put out records, put out boxed sets.

tylerw, Tuesday, 12 November 2019 18:01 (four years ago) link

dylan has literally released 60+ discs of unreleased archival material this decade.

tylerw, Tuesday, 12 November 2019 18:02 (four years ago) link

does dylan spend much time, directly, on his bootleg series? or does he just delegate that shit? if so, have that person get in touch with neil

at home in the alternate future, (Karl Malone), Tuesday, 12 November 2019 18:03 (four years ago) link

lol XP

at home in the alternate future, (Karl Malone), Tuesday, 12 November 2019 18:03 (four years ago) link

i was typing that out as you posted that, tyler! but seriously, it just goes to show it is NOT that hard

at home in the alternate future, (Karl Malone), Tuesday, 12 November 2019 18:04 (four years ago) link

lolz.
Dylan likely has veto power over anything released, but beyond that, he probably spends about five minutes per year thinking about it.

tylerw, Tuesday, 12 November 2019 18:05 (four years ago) link

whereas neil is currently smoking a joint and thinking ... "now what was the name of that record from 1975? oh yeah Homegrown, we should put that out. hold on a sec ... what were the songs on that one. had em on a post-it note sometime in 2002..."

tylerw, Tuesday, 12 November 2019 18:06 (four years ago) link

I have a friend who was at the show where "Post-It Note" was played the first and only time. He said it was the best thing he ever heard. No recordings exist, unfortunately.
