the middle 3 panels would be even more brilliant if they were presented as a regular weekday strip w/ no explanation or backstory whatsoever.

WOING!

I have fond memories of garfield eating jon & odie in a dream sequence but dunno how it holds up today.
hi-concept one where garfield literally kicks odie into next week.

Also humongous 500lb ogreish year-one garfield visually hilarious by itself.

this is ruined by the last panel, much like LOST was ruined by the last episode, but still:

if/when Jim Davis ever has the sense to retire, he really ought to run this as the final strip, provoking a debate to rival the Sopranos closer, viz. "does the black panel represent Garfield's death or just the grim mundanity of suburban WASPy living?" and "fuck this, I'm canceling my Times subscription." and Davis's eloquent rebuttal:

The way I see it is that Garfield had been people’s alter ego. They had gleefully watched him eat, grumble, vegetate, sleep, and eat. They had cheered him on. And then, all of a sudden, they wanted to see him punished for all that. They wanted "justice." They wanted to see his distended orange belly splattered on the wall. I thought that was disgusting, frankly. But these people have always wanted gluttony. Maybe they would have been happy if Garfield had eaten twelve other goldfish. Or twenty-five goldfish. Or, who knows, if he had eaten the moon. The pathetic thing- to me- was how much they wanted his blood, after cheering him on for thirty years.

if/when Jim Davis ever has the sense to retire

didn't he stop making the strips himself back in like the '80s?

acid druthers temple (crüt), Thursday, 3 February 2011 00:41 (thirteen years ago) link

according to Slate:

In his 1982 interview with Shapiro, Davis admitted to spending only 13 or 14 hours a week writing and drawing the strip, compared to 60 hours a week doing promotion and licensing.

But today Davis spends even less time on the strip than he used to—between three days and a week each month. During that time, he collaborates with another cartoonist to generate ideas and rough sketches, then hands them over to Paws employees to be illustrated.

...which makes about as much sense as David Lynch employing an art department to illustrate The Angriest Dog in the World. JDav should definitely computerize that shit.

Hate to say it, but if your capital city and largest city also contains the state's name, everyone's just going to think of the two as one and the same.

Unless there's a cool city up the way like Tulsa.

Jon is so racist he can't stop feeling disgusted by Asians even hours later.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 6 February 2019 16:43 (five years ago) link

Really though, there's such established cartoon tropes to signify someone has eaten something too hot (face turning red, smoke coming out of the mouth/ears, etc) that it's really mystifying whoever drew that didn't just use them.
