nice to see

Related: Chelsea Manning has been trapped in solitary confinement for refusing to answer questions before a Grand Jury.

Solitary confinement is torture.

Chelsea is being tortured for whistleblowing, she should be released on bail, and we should ban extended solitary in the US. https://t.co/95ef4xYt3k

a few days ago I listened to that town hall AOC did with Chris Hayes and when she said the Republicans passed a constitutional amendment to stop FDR from being reelected I was like, "I hope nobody heard that."

Conservatives did.

xp she was right.

the amendment that capped presidents at two terms was proposed while FDR was in his second term but not passed until after he died. so it didn't stop him. but that was the intention.

i thought you guys were supposed to be smart.

Trϵϵship, Tuesday, 2 April 2019 19:39 (five years ago) link

dude the Republicans were in the minority in 1944. They passed the amendment in 1947 after winning majorities in house and senate.

We were never Breeting Borting (President Keyes), Tuesday, 2 April 2019 19:47 (five years ago) link

yes, GOP regained Congress for the first time since the Hoover years. Truman was exempt from the amendment.

She misspoke. I have no doubt that she knows when FDR died and when the amendment was passed, just like I know 100% that Barack Obama doesn't think there really is 54 states.

But like Neil Armstrong forgetting the difference between "man" and "mankind," she misspoke. It's dumb of the right-wingers to run off with it, but let's not pretend that what she literally said was fact.

pplains, Tuesday, 2 April 2019 19:49 (five years ago) link

xxp it also specifically exempted the sitting president at the time of proposal or passage and applied only to future presidents. So she was right for the wrong reasons -- it was definitely a reaction to Roosevelt's third and fourth terms, but would not have stopped him from having them because he would have been grandfathered in.

Yerac, Tuesday, 2 April 2019 19:56 (five years ago) link

People aren’t walking wikipedias. The general point is that republicans moved to impose term limits as a reaction to FDR’s popularity

Trump doesn’t know what country his father was born in

Trϵϵship, Tuesday, 2 April 2019 19:56 (five years ago) link

The thing is, like most normal people, she accepts corrections or amends her statements. She doesn't double down and try to rewrite history.

Yerac, Tuesday, 2 April 2019 19:57 (five years ago) link

except this time

Trϵϵship, Tuesday, 2 April 2019 20:00 (five years ago) link

did she double down? Is this the new thing people want to torch her with?

Yerac, Tuesday, 2 April 2019 20:00 (five years ago) link

can AOC serve four term? If so, THEN she can talk.

recriminations from the nitpicking woke (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 2 April 2019 20:01 (five years ago) link

I didn't even notice what the issue was with what she said.

Yerac, Tuesday, 2 April 2019 20:02 (five years ago) link

yes, she doubled down

Hey Rep. Cheney,

I see from your dead people comment that you get your news from Facebook memes, but the National Constitution Center + Newsweek are just two of many places where you can clarify your misunderstanding of the history of the 22nd Amendment: https://t.co/Je6mHFJ687 https://t.co/np1XtgLpm1

Trϵϵship, Tuesday, 2 April 2019 20:03 (five years ago) link

xp

Trϵϵship, Tuesday, 2 April 2019 20:03 (five years ago) link

It’s an incredibly dumb controversy

Trϵϵship, Tuesday, 2 April 2019 20:04 (five years ago) link

well passing an Amendment in 1947 to stop FDR from being re-elected shows that they really hated that dude

We were never Breeting Borting (President Keyes), Tuesday, 2 April 2019 20:05 (five years ago) link

she got it wrong, it's an understandable mistake, the 22nd was clearly targeted at FDR and his legacy, but insisting that she actually got it right based on a strained reading of history is not a great strategy

Evans on Hammond (evol j), Tuesday, 2 April 2019 20:12 (five years ago) link

Yeah, I don't think that is doubling down. She's not wrong, her selection of words relative to the timing of how it played out is not great as shown in that newsweek article.

I just made the mistake of looking at my dad's fb to see if he has anything new public (because I haven't spoken to him in over 2 years and am not fb friends). Holy crap are there a lot of messy memes about AOC being stupid. Obsessed. (this fascination with Maxine Waters and Pelosi too).

Yerac, Wednesday, 3 April 2019 13:37 (five years ago) link

I have to admit that I was taught that the Presidency is term-limited because it killed FDR and Congress didn’t want that to happen again.
