I'm usually in London on Thursdays (not this week because I'm seeing the Cosmic Psychos on Friday), and my train goes from London Bridge, which appears to be in SE1!
― Colonel Poo, Tuesday, 2 April 2019 13:24 (four years ago) link
Well well well just look at this all potentially working out nicely for people and stuff. :) Next Thursday or the week after? The week after would be right before a holiday but that might mean people are away.
― Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Tuesday, 2 April 2019 13:27 (four years ago) link
I can't do next week but currently can the week after, not that these facts should make much difference.
― Tim, Tuesday, 2 April 2019 13:30 (four years ago) link
I can do both - I am away over Easter, so I probably wouldn't be out for long on the 18th, but I could definitely come out.
― Andrew Farrell, Tuesday, 2 April 2019 13:36 (four years ago) link
next week bad. any of the following weeks would love to do as it was only a flying visit last time.
― Fizzles, Tuesday, 2 April 2019 13:36 (four years ago) link
So you're all talking about the 18th, right?
― Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Tuesday, 2 April 2019 13:47 (four years ago) link
Yes.

I haven't FAP'd for years but I do FAP, if you see what I mean.
Thursdays might work for me.

You're all just showing off because my attempt to organise an Oxford FAP has died (again).
― djh, Monday, 15 April 2019 20:29 (four years ago) link
didn't realise you were trying to organise an Oxford FAP, djh. Revive the thread, I'd be well up for it.
― Grandpont Genie, Tuesday, 16 April 2019 04:58 (four years ago) link
The only other pub I like around Borough is ILB fap fave Royal Oak but yes that will be rammed too.
― xyzzzz__, Tuesday, 16 April 2019 07:30 (four years ago) link
Are there any that maybe you like a little less but will also be less likely to be rammed? If not let's just pick one of those and hope for the best.
― Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Tuesday, 16 April 2019 09:23 (four years ago) link
Kings Arms is pleasant but tiny Royal Oak not much larger – we are best used to it, despite change of management. The George is v characterful but has not much bar for the number of customers it seats (bcz it has such an extensive outside area). Lord Clyde: fond memories but haven't been there for years Globe Tavern (in the market): enraging overcrowded visit last time I was there (to meet up w/Geeta) but it was amateur month so Blue Eyed Maid: horrible sports and karaoke barn
There's another one near the Lord Clyde I think, with various dusty stuffed animals above the bar?
― mark s, Tuesday, 16 April 2019 09:34 (four years ago) link
Also in the area: The Southwark Tavern, The Mudlark (under London Bridge), the Anchor (by the river near the Clink)
― Andrew Farrell, Tuesday, 16 April 2019 09:39 (four years ago) link
I had forgotten Amateur Month: http://freakytrigger.co.uk/pumpkin/2005/12/warning-pub-amateur-month-has-begun/
Though if I ever knew what a flyer was, I have forgotten that too.
― Andrew Farrell, Tuesday, 16 April 2019 09:42 (four years ago) link
I was in the Bunch of Grapes the other day and there were seats, but it was later on like 8:30-9ish and on a Tuesday
I've been to the George a couple of times and yeah it was busy
― Colonel Poo, Tuesday, 16 April 2019 09:48 (four years ago) link
a flyer is a swift solo pint i think? i may be wrong but the clue is in the context really
― mark s, Tuesday, 16 April 2019 09:55 (four years ago) link
Might be able to come out for once. Make up for missing too many ilb faps.
Lord Clyde is an old favourite, but like mark s haven't been in a few years. I cannot remember going to the The Glad(stone) even though it had a good rep. Is that the stuffed animals one? The Roebuck, down Great Dover St, used to be alright. All the in-market pubs tend to the enragingly overcrowded imo, but The Market Porter is surprisingly spacious and I quite like it as big, busy pubs go Bunch of Grapes might be the pub I've most frequently passed without ever buying a drink in. It's become a sort of principle, not drinking there. King's Arms off the High Street used to be reliably quiet, not so sure now - http://freakytrigger.co.uk/pumpkin/2009/11/the-ft-top-25-pubs-of-the-00s-25-the-kings-arms-borough/Weird fondness for The Old King's Head but only remember being there when drinking to get properly drunk.(quick shout for The Rose on Snowsfields, which used to be my local and favourite pub in the world, but is now just a nice, awkwardly shaped gastropub)
― woof, Tuesday, 16 April 2019 10:10 (four years ago) link
I can't make it on Thursday but Borough in general is not a great place to do this at the start of a Bank Holiday weekend and the closer to the market you are the worse it will be.
― Matt DC, Tuesday, 16 April 2019 10:12 (four years ago) link
It was someone's request that we do it around there, right? I've never been to any of these so am leaving it up to you all to decide.
― Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Tuesday, 16 April 2019 10:15 (four years ago) link
I'm happy so many people seem to be able to come!
MattDC - next time!
Yeah the SE1 thing was probably my fault and if anyone has brilliant ideas for better spots that won't be full and are convenient for people to drop in they should suggest them.
(The Lord Clyde is as good as ever but probably a bit small for these purposes; they do allow you to reserve tables in the back room I think but I am against such behaviours.)
(Yes a flyer is when you're on a round but the people you're drinking with are drinking at a sensible speed and you're in need of another when they're nowhere near so you get yourself a quick off-round drink while still remaining in the round.)
― Tim, Tuesday, 16 April 2019 11:12 (four years ago) link
I've heard SE7 is nice
― imago, Tuesday, 16 April 2019 11:14 (four years ago) link
In all seriousness though, Bermondsey is 1 stop from London Bridge and possesses numerous fine pubs and a clutch of nearby craft brewers to match
― imago, Tuesday, 16 April 2019 11:15 (four years ago) link
bermondsey is a minor mare for me (req. bus and overground then underground plus walk if there's a walk) -- BUT happy to go with a majority tbh, esp if the mare also means we can all sit down and stretch out
― mark s, Tuesday, 16 April 2019 11:21 (four years ago) link
There is a fine clutch of craft brewers - we should not go there.
― Andrew Farrell, Tuesday, 16 April 2019 11:51 (four years ago) link
Yeah lol please.
Getting a lot of positives on Lord Clyde. Is it smaller than royal Oak?
― xyzzzz__, Tuesday, 16 April 2019 11:54 (four years ago) link
slightly bigger if memory serves (caveat: years since i was there)
― mark s, Tuesday, 16 April 2019 12:01 (four years ago) link
I thought I’d been there v recently so I searched my email and the occasion I was thinking of was pals visiting from DC in...April 2006(!). But surely there was one other visit in the last 13 years. I don’t get out much.
― Michael Jones, Tuesday, 16 April 2019 12:13 (four years ago) link
Clyde marginally smaller than the Royal Oak I'd guess, but there's surely not much in it either way.
― Tim, Tuesday, 16 April 2019 12:58 (four years ago) link
The Lord Clyde is often heaving in the early evenings but tends to empty out, my memory is it's marginally better for a largeish group than the Royal Oak or the King's Arms, both of which are fine pubs but awkward for groups bigger than four or five.
The Horseshoe Inn on the other side of the tracks towards Bermondsey St has a pretty big, open back room and lots of space for outdoor drinking, which is where most people will be if it's a nice day, which it looks like being.
