well i mean what hipster movement is this thread about exactly? if anything lady gaga has inspired a bunch of tl;dr bullshit on ILX (see: that one thread about the vacuousness of pop or whatever) about how terrible she is, it's the gays and the mainstream fans that seem to be building her up the most.

I don't hate 'Just Dance' but I never hum it, is all I'm saying and I hum stupid-ass songs from every decade I've been alive (and quite a few from ones even before that).

I basically don't know anyone who is thumbs-upping Lady GaGa while hating on Britney et al. I mean, I'd be surprised to find a hipster who likes "Just Dance" but can't stand "Toxic."

I guess the difference would be that Britney is almost always appreciated ironically by hipsters, whereas Gaga seems to be sincerely accepted with little reservation (yes, that's a lot of generalizations). This, despite the fact that the actual style of their music is nearly identical.

Most of the really big boosts of Lady Gaga I've seen have come from critics who both like chart-pop and like the idea of a performer with a story, a self-determined visual aesthetic, a backstory, a soundbite-friendly interview style etc.

These aren't Geir-people (they still listen to Britney regardless) but the "she's the new Madonna" claim doeshave traction for these types.

They're both gay and straight. My tl;dr post about vacuous pop didn't really go into why people would like gaga (or why gay people would) but I would say a specifically or self-consciously "gay" appreciation of Lady Gaga would also include an in-built appreciation for her ridiculousness - the fashion shoots and photographs that go beyond wacky and into disastrous territory, the ludicrousness of her claims for herself, the way her music can seem generic and idiosyncratic at the same time etc. etc.

Whereas the not-specifically-gay version would usually play down the appreciation-of-failure side of things.

Having said that, I don't think her commercial success is founded on either types of people.

Why does ilx hate her so? Is she really overexposed in places that aren't Australia? Because here she can be one of the handful of songs occasionally played on commercial radio that you don't mind.

she's basically an art school kid that made it big doing her own thing and comes off as such which is why that crowd goes for it.

this is totally wrong i think. she doesnt really have those fans except for that small niche of ppl already into chart pop. her main fanbase is, & i dont mean this in a particularly condescending way although it might sound like i do, women who go clubbing & liked sex & the city a whole lot. its getting young yuppie love, basically, at least from the ladies. its popular shit. i dont really know any hip trendy folks who are into it except as, like, an ironic thing
