ok the phrase "uncomfortably numb" now has to make a third emo appearance this year, these are the rules
― Simon H., Friday, 29 March 2019 15:58 (five years ago) link
lmao i thought the same thing
whole album is like a long lost mid-'00s emo crossover record. i hear echoes of early panic!, infinity and folie era fall out boy, and black parade mcr all over this thing (plus their main influence for their past two records, third eye blind)

It's a little slicker than I generally like but it's got some undeniable appeal.
― Simon H., Monday, 1 April 2019 12:39 (five years ago) link
it's extremely slick and i love everything about it

I will be hardpressed to remove free throw from my ears anytime soon but I do want to check out the Maine album.

new Pup is really strong, a solid step up, and even a little chopsy in places

ok my ears aren't totally nuts
I definitely get not wanting classical training, especially for a punk band.Stefan: Yeah, I mean, Zack and Steve and Nestor all really understand music theory and they’re incredible musicians, and I’d say that understanding of music theory hasn’t hurt them creatively. But, for me, every time I’ve tried to label things with the guitar, like, “this is this chord and this is the theory behind why these chords work together” or whatever, it’s really just causing more agony than anything. I’m sure Zack’s had a different experience because he’s a classically fantastic musician, as well as a great punk musician.Zack: I don’t know about that, but yeah it’s definitely helped because Stefan has a kind of unorthodox approach to writing songs — by that I mean writing melodically without paying super close to attention to how even the bars are or how rhythmically it fits together — so he somehow accidentally falls into these really interesting time signatures, and I guess just taking some lessons and being a nerd about music and having this so-called training has helped me a lot in adapting to that and not trying to squeeze the song into a 4/4 box, which I think we’ve accomplished really well. And at the same time, our guitar player Steve is trained, so to speak. He went to school for jazz guitar, but he sort of presents his own version of what punk is. To me — it’s a broader interpretation — but, in the grander sense, punk is sort of about going against what’s normal, whether that means you’re a great guitar player and you prefer to do something weird, or you’re expressing yourself against all odds and against a lack of training, I think those both can be punk.

That's such a nice excerpt to help explain their weird flavour of (dis)synchrony. Oh I love the new album so much! Through its darknesses it's still exhilaratingly fun. I'm seeing them on Wednesday - five days to learn all the lyrics!
― alrakis morissette (tangenttangent), Friday, 5 April 2019 20:47 (five years ago) link
yeah everything finally clicks just right. I liked the singles but some of the album tracks ("See You At Your Funeral") are even catchier and the lil curveballs ("Full Blown Meltdown" could pull a fake ID and sneak onto an ETID album) all work splendidly

This PUP gig was the apotheosis of London fans having been starved for so many months... The entire crowd was a hysterical mosh pit and PUP were deeply crowd pleasing and charming. They touted a London charity for assisting disadvantaged children into music schools that literally everyone gave money to. A small token, but the kind of offering that should be more foregrounded in gigs in general. Also they played an extra-long set to be nice. My voice is totally shredded.

that sounds awesome. I'm so glad they're having a moment, they seem like genuine folks
idk if this new J Robbins single quite belongs here but it's real nice!

Aaw Mordy, I’m sure they’ll do some more dates at some point. They said they’ve just started touring for two years or something crazy.

it pains me that Drug Church are playing here but only as fourth-billed(!) on the Movements gig. I'm listening to their album now and there's nothing special about it.

The first support - Save Face - were excellent. Like so energetic and positive. Checking out their 2018 album now and it holds up.
The Radar State album has grown to be one of my favourites this year, but I am yet to hear new Get Up Kids. Waiting for a sunny day.
