All ballots must by law now include “Click Click”, would be a fitting #1. RIP RR

Trompe Le Monde has just been removed from Spotify ffs, the title-track was one of my best discoveries in this

it's back now.

I'm not even half way through the playlist, don't think there's any way I can finish it by tomorrow. oh well. I will get a ballot done tomorrow though.

Colonel Poo, Wednesday, 27 March 2019 09:51 (five years ago) link

I only got through about 100 songs on the playlist before I threw in the towel but found some songs for my ballot. "The Letter" is one of those songs I must have heard and enjoyed >10 times in my life but never knew the name of - thanks to whoever nommed!

Vinnie, Wednesday, 27 March 2019 10:02 (five years ago) link

Decided to go with music I was already familiar with. First pass = 133 tracks.

PPL+AI=NS (imago), Thursday, 28 March 2019 13:04 (five years ago) link

I was glad to discover that ditty myself. Thanks for the Youtube list, btw. A goodly chunk of my shortlist was over there.

Not least this 1981 obscurity I nominated. (Blessed with a very nifty found-footage fan video.)

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Thursday, 28 March 2019 22:12 (five years ago) link

looks like we're up to 30 ballots!

which is great, but hey lurkers out there or people who don't normally vote in these things - you should vote in this thing! doesn't have to be a full ballot, it can just be 20 of your faves.

even with 30 ballots, i'm a little concerned that since there are so many nominations, there will be a very wide, shallow pool of votes, with lots of ties and songs that only get 2 votes placing high, or whatever. the more ballots we get, the less of a problem that'll be.

Karl Malone, Friday, 29 March 2019 00:00 (five years ago) link

i should vote in this. it's just hard for me to muster up the enthusiasm for random songs as opposed to a genre or single artist.

Bee OK, Friday, 29 March 2019 00:52 (five years ago) link

...i mean you could post a ballot that's entirely made up of guided by voices

but then there would fisticuffs

it's just hard for me to muster up the enthusiasm for random songs as opposed to a genre or single artist

This is a genre, though--short songs. "But 'short' is subjective." So, at the margins, is any genre.

clemenza, Saturday, 30 March 2019 16:20 (five years ago) link

first pass through gives me a long list of only 61, I was ruthless

Emperor Tonetta Ketchup (sleeve), Saturday, 30 March 2019 16:32 (five years ago) link

btw these are all the songs under 30 seconds:

look I'm sorry that I haven't been able to pay any real attention to this poll but I'm afraid you'll have to cancel and start again, this list does not include Babaganouj or Steak & Chips by Smudge

for that matter, the long list probably doesn't have Tea, Toast & Turmoil or Lighten Up Hank or Ugly, Just Like Me or Real McCoy, Wrong Sinatra or Scary Cassettes or Alison Tells Me She's Not Sure That What She's Got's Contagious (the acoustic version is better but not on Bandcamp)

OK I've checked and it doesn't, nor has Tom Morgan's other band been acknowledged with Deaf Girl, Dumb Guy, Blind Love or (Closing Time At The) Tittie Bar or B.U. or I Got A Type or Loud & True or Isle Of Lesbos

or anything at all on the
Sneeze (41 Songs In 47 Minutes) album or
other short songs on their other studio albums

or the Love Positions' Into Your Arms (covered by Lemonheads at longer than 1:38) or Don't Slow Down (went to #1 when covered by Ratcat at longer than 1:24)

steven, soda jerk (sic), Saturday, 30 March 2019 18:13 (five years ago) link

eh you had plenty of time to nominate

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Saturday, 30 March 2019 18:17 (five years ago) link

sic, only you can save the fate of the least used sub-poll:

4) there are also three optional sub-polls: Top 5 songs under 30 seconds, Favorite <2 minutes artist, and Top 5 songs that aren’t on the nominations list because of a technical formality or because i fucked up or because it wasn’t nominated because this world is going to HELL, etc

Karl Malone, Saturday, 30 March 2019 18:20 (five years ago) link

I still don't have time to listen to noms and vote :( but will hear everything on the results

everyone should throw an ear at Deaf Girl, Dumb Guy, Blind Love though

steven, soda jerk (sic), Saturday, 30 March 2019 18:27 (five years ago) link

Can we have another week to get votes in?

plastered in paris (FlopsyDuck), Saturday, 30 March 2019 18:35 (five years ago) link

i could be convinced, but it would help to know that their are others out there who could use the extra time.

right now we're sitting at about 35 ballots, which is pretty good. but this is supposed to be the companion poll to lee's 10 minutes+ poll, which had 58 ballots. so it would be nice if we had a comparable number of ballots, especially given that everyone took the time to submit 17 billion nominations. i might go through the nominations thread today and see who nominated a bunch of songs but hasn't voted yet, and then send them a singing telegram informing them to vote or die

Karl Malone, Saturday, 30 March 2019 18:42 (five years ago) link

Please don’t drag this out longer

ebro the letter (Whiney G. Weingarten), Saturday, 30 March 2019 18:47 (five years ago) link

it's true, extending the deadline would seem to be contrary to the spirit of the poll

Karl Malone, Saturday, 30 March 2019 18:52 (five years ago) link

I would use an extra week to procrastinate, not do any useful listening, and wind up with the same ballot that I'd produce by tomorrow night.

16 Historic English ILXors You Must Explore Soon (WmC), Saturday, 30 March 2019 19:26 (five years ago) link

Voting for no-extension...The longer any poll goes on--or at least the longer it goes on past the moment of peak interest--the more that interest wanes.

clemenza, Saturday, 30 March 2019 19:42 (five years ago) link

More ballots getting submitted means more people with a stake in the results. You trippin clemenza

plastered in paris (FlopsyDuck), Saturday, 30 March 2019 20:00 (five years ago) link

Not at all. Maybe you get 3 or 4 extra ballots, while simultaneously the 35 people who have already voted are steadily losing interest; I know I do, and I bet I'm not the only one.

The deadline was posted three or four weeks ago, with a very sensible suggestion that the fate of the world did not hinge upon the results and that it wasn't necessary to hear every single song before voting.

clemenza, Saturday, 30 March 2019 20:05 (five years ago) link

I expect nothing less than quick voters being impatient and having the ability to lose interest quickly though. I should be jealous of people that have the ability to get real excited about things though.

plastered in paris (FlopsyDuck), Saturday, 30 March 2019 20:06 (five years ago) link

You've convinced me. Let's extend the deadline to July; there are under-2:00 songs being released as we type, and we need to hear those too.

clemenza, Saturday, 30 March 2019 20:07 (five years ago) link

Sorry--general frustration. We go through this with the ILX film poll too, with people wanting to push back the poll until they're able to see everything (so we do it in the summer now). I just find the whole nomination-discussion-results cycle of every ILX/ILM poll takes forever.

clemenza, Saturday, 30 March 2019 20:11 (five years ago) link

Nahh. Keep things the way they are. It doesn't matter to me if I don't submit a ballot since I had fun making that youtube playlist. That’s my baby. Not the results.

plastered in paris (FlopsyDuck), Saturday, 30 March 2019 20:11 (five years ago) link

I have managed to make all 300+ songs transition nicely so far. I have been reuploading youtubes just to make less severe volume change between songs. I have reached a punk/metal/noise block in the playlist and I look forward to syncing those songs together as I finish the playlist.

plastered in paris (FlopsyDuck), Saturday, 30 March 2019 20:15 (five years ago) link

flopsy can you can just submit an unranked ballot of your fave songs from your youtube playlist? or something

Karl Malone, Saturday, 30 March 2019 20:17 (five years ago) link

(xpost) That's it; what you get out of these things, to me, has little or nothing to do with the results or how comprehensive your ballot is. I'm sure your playlist helped lots of people fill in gaps. For me, the fun is in putting my ballot together from what I already know, plus the first couple of weeks of discussion. When the results are posted, I may listen to any high-placing songs I don't know (I'm more inclined to seek out high-placing films I haven't seen).

clemenza, Saturday, 30 March 2019 20:20 (five years ago) link

I can probably hastily throw something together tomorrow. Saturdays are for lying in bed til dinner.
