yeah i do find remarks like "We live in an age completely dominated by the fact of the internet" fatuous. thought the same thing about the lockwood piece
― difficult listening hour, Tuesday, 26 March 2019 17:50 (five years ago) link
no idea why tom whyman keeps getting commissioned - fatuous is exactly right. his pieces are always one paragraph on some internet thing, a paragraph of surface level reading of some philosopher, paragraph or two of inane personal anecdote, and then a "so in the final analysis it's all political" conclusion
he wrote an article on that thing about throwing cheese slices at babies the other week that makes this this dril article (which is a rewrite of one he's already written at least once) look like kierkegaard

interesting because the lockwood piece is not about this at all
― flopson, Tuesday, 26 March 2019 22:58 (five years ago) link
i enjoyed the lockwood piece but felt it framed problems of human consciousness and communication that date to the invention of text as phenomena emerging from the author and her buds' doggo posts; halfway thru it explicitly acknowledged this and then was literally like "look this up lol?" before returning to a few more thou words of "the portal brought the dictator". nb tho i read it on acid.

also kinda think there is a media class that thinks everyone is on twitter all the time, and they aren't.

it was much more interesting than this clickbait about dril, to be clear.

I swore off Twitter last year but my new phone had me right back into it - after culling my follow list and muting a few words it was just about ok.But today I think I'll delete it again. What I've realised is that the problem is all the basically nice(?) people on there who I see * constantly quote-tweeting arseholes to tell them to fuck off (which means I'm effectively following said arseholes)* on constant fucking cancel-watch and treating it like some sort of fun game we can all play* non-stop low-key sniping at each-other over minor political differences because complaining about Trump/May/Brexit has been done to death now * always having to have an opinion about everything, whether they are informed about it or not
Only exception to thins is a handful of comedy accounts, and I can live without those.
