I DON'T GET IT.

So it's a bunch of stairs that go interlock with each other to form a basket?

https://www.thisiscolossal.com/2019/03/thomas-heatherwick/

I mean, other places have those too, except there's usually a food court on the ground level.

Great and somewhat less than respectful piece about it and it's designer Thomas Heatherwick, which manages to use the sentence "Heatherwick is forty-eight, employs nearly two hundred people, and has two children" as a punchline:

Yeah, I love it. Saw a few photos with the arm and trident missing, hope it's fixed now.

Le Bateau Ivre, Tuesday, 30 July 2019 14:51 (four years ago) link

there's currently a bit of a spate of undersea statuary (tho i think most of it is not technically gigantic)

(this is from the underwater sculpture park in molinere bay off of grenada)

mark s, Tuesday, 30 July 2019 14:58 (four years ago) link

Beautiful. Imagine most statues on earth will end up looking like that eventually :/

Le Bateau Ivre, Tuesday, 30 July 2019 15:00 (four years ago) link

The bronze statues or the unreinforced concrete ones near sea level. The typical framework + cladding giant statues will corrode and collapse, the rebar in reinforced concrete corrodes and without maintenance the concrete becomes rubble.

Fortunately, sea level rise is the slowest appearing effect of the long climate crisis. Maybe 1 m this century, 3 or so m every century for the next several millennia. The Statue of Liberty's base isn't crested til late 4th millenium (around the time White Plains, NY is beachfront).
