people who mistakenly think 77 is a cliquey thing should direct their ire to actual snobby borads like 1p3 and Ask a Drunk!

calumy (rip van wanko), Sunday, 17 March 2019 16:05 (five years ago) link

Would you say that 77 covers the ground that the old "This is the thread where I say" threads used to?

lol at one point it did and someone started a thread complaining about it

sarahell, Sunday, 17 March 2019 16:46 (five years ago) link

BTW, it fills me with great ire to see people disparaging the "This is the thread where I say" series of threads when the only despicable aspect of the threads was that it had as one of its regulars a grifter. None of you motherfuckers seem to want to acknowledge that at the time those threads were ongoing, ILX was EXTREMELY cliqueish and if you didn't happen to live in one of the geographical areas whose own chatty threads overran ILE, you were fucked. Nowadays ILX doesn't need a TITTWIS thread because I see that the lines of discussion are far more catholic (e.g. the "Irrationally Angry" thread series), but back when they existed they were very much in fucking need. Y'all complain about 77 but it seems infinitely more open than ILX was back in those bad old days. Hell, even the Noize Boarders were more open and welcoming than the NYC/L.A./Australian/New Zealander/Glasgow/Londoner cliques, and they were practically KIDS at the time.

The Colour of Spring (deethelurker), Sunday, 17 March 2019 17:21 (five years ago) link

Anyway, as far as Chaki is concerned, the only person he owed an apology to in the era of "unveiling Luna" is Sam and if he's already done that he's fully in the clear and need not apologize to anyone else, least of all Luna. I will never forgive her for taking advantage of that particular unnamed person. He was a very kind man and didn't deserve a single bit of that.

You would have to be on 77 to compare how open it is to earlier incarnations of ILX. Ironically.

Yes, but thousands of miles away from NYC and L.A., smack dab in the middle of Texas. Oh, and I don't mention the Chicago crew (even though they had their own geographical thread series) because the vast majority of them also participated in the TITTWIS thread series so it's as if that clique never even existed in the first place.

You would have to be on 77 to compare how open it is to earlier incarnations of ILX. Ironically.

It seems as though the only thing you'd need to do to join 77 is ask the person in charge? Which, BTW, I'll do right now just to see how easy it is. Will report back.

Look, your argument only holds water if there had been a thread series devoted to people from the whole of the continental U.S., and a thousand miles might as well have been as far as we are to Mars to me back then, having just been saddled with the responsibility of caring for my mom as I did at the time. I couldn't even do a sleep study at a local clinic a handful of miles away without it being a huge production! TITTWIS had zero geographical restrictions. You could be several thousand miles apart but still converse about anything and everything. I just happened to bring the tone of the conversation down a lot because of the aforementioned untreated depression and anxiety issues, but pretty much everyone else was a solid conversationalist and everyone welcomed everyone else who was into conversing back and forth. I see this happening on a wider basis these days and that's awesome to me. This board feels infinitely more like a cohesive community. It should have always been this way.

No, that's not it, I don't want to belong to a club where people have to ask to join.

Then don't join... ? However, also don't complain about its existence when you refuse to do the one (ONE!!!) thing required to join.

a thousand miles might as well have been as far as we are to Mars to me back then,

It’s over three thousand real actual Earth miles from Perth to Christchurch. It’s five (5) miles from Kelvingrove to Parkhead. If you really think these are comparable geographic “cliques,”might I gently suggest that you were projecting your resentment at the time, and not that posters in each were behaving in identical manners.

People talk about sports in lots of threads on ILX; this is not because they have formed a clique to keep me out, it’s because they’re interested in that sport.

steven, soda jerk (sic), Sunday, 17 March 2019 18:41 (five years ago) link

No, that's not it, I don't want to belong to a club where people have to ask to join.

It’s bemusing how you’re able to post here without ever having requested to register an account and then receiving a secret password via email

Branwell was not an Australian who typed her name in lowercase, you maniacs

steven, soda jerk (sic), Sunday, 17 March 2019 18:44 (five years ago) link

I think it’s more that geography-based threads, even if all the posters aren’t in the same location, are based on an affinity? and they were some of the more active ile spaces

so yeah, it’s like sports, where there is not a barrier to entry per se, but a lack of common ground to just jump in and banter

tbh there are currently repeated references to a “her” meaning some racist/nationalist australian political figure on a couple threads about the recently-egged fascist and I’ve got to circle back and find out what that’s about, or decide if I really want to know about more about despicable figures around the world. little details like that make joining in on some discussions opaque. not impossible, just a feeling like I’m listening in

I'm willing to concede that the discussion on those geographical threads may have been more of a wider nature than I'd expected, but I did see the titles of those threads with the anticipation that the only topics of discussion would be topics of interest solely to those people living in said geographical areas. With TITTWIS I knew the topic of discussion was the human condition in general; work woes, e.g., are universal no matter where you live. Maybe the lines of discussion in the geographical threads originally began with topics of special interest to those in those areas, but evolved to be more all-encompassing. It's too late for me to find out, though I have found a wider measure of acceptance with regard to the people I've been able to make FB friends with from this forum community. In fact, it's because of my interactions with those people that I've recognized that even at its clique-iest, ILX had zero hope of being even remotely as "stuck in high school"-esque cliqueishness (IDC if that's even a word) as some of the former '80s teenaged girls I "met" via one Duran Duran fan community in particular, who closed ranks around each other and completely shut everyone else out. NO ONE here was even REMOTELY that bitchy, or could ever hope of being. That's one major benefit this forum community has had over the old Duranie community I used to belong to, that caused me to flee to this one (nb: I'm not talking about the old Tiger List mailing list, just in case anyone was wondering).

Yeah, it's not that I had the anticipation of any of them being "unwelcoming", it's just that I felt the topics of conversation would be of interest solely to those people living in that geographical area. Which wouldn't have been noticeable if those geographical topics comprised a small minority of the conversational threads, but for awhile there it seemed as though those were the only conversational threads available aside from the TITTWIS series, which I always regarded as more of a free-for-all.

dee is mega welcome on 77 though

Love you too, mh! Anyway, see how easy it would be to be in with THAT "in crowd"? If even *I* can pass muster... !

The Colour of Spring (deethelurker), Sunday, 17 March 2019 19:10 (five years ago) link

Every thread is a conversational thread.

A thread about a baseball team is not excluding me; it’s including people who have an interest in baseball. A thread about a concert in Glasgow (by an artist that isn’t Duran Duran) is not excluding you; it’s including people who have an interest in that musical artist.

Again, you were TWO THOUSAND MILES CLOSER to L.A. than posters in that “geographical area” were to each other. You were even on the same continent!

I’m not saying these things to chide you btw - rather in the hope you can find some greater chill now and let your 2003 attitude feel more distant :)

A thread about a baseball team is not excluding me; it’s including people who have an interest in baseball. A thread about a concert in Glasgow (by an artist that isn’t Duran Duran) is not excluding you; it’s including people who have an interest in that musical artist.

But a thread about baseball would hold zero interest for me since I have zero interest in the topic. However, I do listen to a considerably greater number of musical artists than just the one (it's just that for a long time I thought I only had the right to discuss a musical artist if I had the amount of knowledge about them as I did with DD); it's just that the hypothetical "thread about a concert in Glasgow" would hold interest with me only if it was about one of those musical artists of which/whom I am a fan. Like, what do I have to contribute to a discussion about what's going on in a place I've never even visited? Unless I was planning to visit said place, which was at the time about as remote as the possibility of that aforementioned conjectural trip to Mars, such a thread would hold nothing of interest to me. I did say I was willing to consider the possibility that the geographical threads opened themselves up to more general discussion; if so, I am sorry for having misjudged them. However, I do not see why one series of GENERAL conversational threads is getting all the ire when all the other threads of that type that existed at the time aren't being treated likewise.

Again, you were TWO THOUSAND MILES CLOSER to L.A. than posters in that “geographical area” were to each other. You were even on the same continent!

Oh, I'm a lot more chill and less emotionally fragile than I was back in 2003, or even in 2013; it's amazing what a couple of years of therapy and some medication can do to a person! But did you miss the whole "I couldn't even dream of going out of town because of parental caregiving duties" situation I told y'all I was in back then? I've only been able to travel since my mom died in July 2015. I got to meet one of the London ILXors as a result. FB has been amazing in terms of being able to interact with other ILXors (both former and current). Anyway, my sole wish is that people stop picking on the TITTWIS thread because it's getting so unfairly shat upon.

The Colour of Spring (deethelurker), Sunday, 17 March 2019 19:28 (five years ago) link

sic I get where you’re coming from but it’s having the reverse effect

I mean, this is why people mostly lurk in places, even when the topic is native to them, there’s a perceived barrier of entry!

I mean, if everyone lurking was only doing so because they had nothing to say, then most posters would be better off lurking

ahem

xpost mh: yeah I guess so but I've typed all this so:

But a thread about baseball would hold zero interest for me since I have zero interest in the topic.

So there's no need to criticise people who posted about baseball 15 years ago for excluding you.

Like, what do I have to contribute to a discussion about what's going on in a place I've never even visited? Unless I was planning to visit said place, which was at the time about as remote as the possibility of that aforementioned conjectural trip to Mars, such a thread would hold nothing of interest to me.

So there's no need to criticise people from New York and London for excluding you by answering when one person from Glasgow asked about going to see Diamanda Galas in 2003.

I did say I was willing to consider the possibility that the geographical threads opened themselves up to more general discussion; if so, I am sorry for having misjudged them.

You blanket criticised the people having conversations in every "geographical" thread for being clique-ish, as though they were shunning anyone from outside a 2.5 mile radius, or a 1,300 mile radius, and as though they never had conversations outside those threads. Criticising people who had never met for finding it pleasant to talk to each other because they got along, while praising the group of people who had never met that you found it pleasant to talk to.

However, I do not see why one series of GENERAL conversational threads is getting all the ire when all the other threads of that type that existed at the time aren't being treated likewise.

Anyway, my sole wish is that people stop picking on the TITTWIS thread because it's getting so unfairly shat upon.

There are 900 posts in this thread, and none of them are directing ire towards a thread where people talked about their dogs and jobs 15 years ago. There's one post, from one person, shitting upon it eleven years ago. (In the context of calling chaki a hero for calling luna fake, from a poster who most recently quit the board after calling another poster fake.)

Other people have lives and circumstances, too. Unless you know that gem somehow could have afforded the money and time to spend $5,000 and 40 days each weekend going to visit duane by boat, and only didn't because she was snobby and exclusionary even within her own geographical area, then your personal circumstances FOR WHICH EVERYONE HERE HAS EVERY SYMPATHY do not make anyone else an arsehole.

Facebook is objectively a social cancer that is literally destroying democracy; you're bringing a positive attitude to your use of it because you talk to people that you like there. Other people brought a positive attitude to talking about seeing Diamanda Galas in 2003.*

*even Tracer who was simultaneously outraged that a trained opera singer with a four-octave vocal range had not wanted to inhale smoke while at her job, five years earlier

steven, soda jerk (sic), Sunday, 17 March 2019 20:19 (five years ago) link

See, a thread about Diamanda Galas would be more interesting for me to read because music fans share a commonality based on adoration of a particular art form and I would be interested in finding out which song(s) excited the audience, particularly if I were in the mood for musical exploration. Like, it was ILX that got me into The Fall, a musical artist I wouldn't have been curious about were it not for the posts I read on here that got me curious about Mark E. Smith and co.! Anyway, sic, I don't think you get what it's like to be someone's primary caregiver on top of holding down a full-time job or else you'd understand how much of one's life is wholly consumed by that (especially since I was expected to stay with my mom every time she was hospitalized) and we're talking in circles anyway, so before we waste more board bandwidth talking in circles let's just give this particular topic a rest, ok?
