i had no idea the venn intersection of lifestyle instagram types + synth purchasers + people with huge amounts of disposable income was so large honestly

like any two of those sure

This is definitely a thing on instagram. Expensive background music generators.
The window isn't even necessary, it can be a nice clean room of bright primary colors.

BUT, SOFT!
Thank you, cute

i think it's interesting that it's standard in these videos to try and not show anyone operating the synths. they're either on complete autoplay or you see a hand or arm stick into the frame to turn a knob but no body or face. i guess that's how modular synth music is but also it's trying to not interrupt the visual synth-porn of the lights and meters. or trying to present the synths as autonomous.

No windows but pastoral reverb-soaked sequences wibbling away on a tree-stump in the woods in Korg's Volca Modular promo.

Heard someone tell a story on a podcast of some rich person buying their modular that they had seen online, for an absurd price. Had to be in that exact case and everything. They just wanted it for an art piece, and either didn't use it or just kept it on one no-touch, self-modulating setting.

xxxp i don't think it's any different from the turntable-playing youtubes. it ain't about you, it's about the synth!!

thank you for these and i strongly disagree with that tweet saying these people should fuck off

i'm also on team modular ambient. as far as luxury items for the petit bourgeoisie go it's pretty small-potatoes. i mean you could presumably be a low-level wage slave and save up for one of these. it takes some project time and the results are fun and therapeutic. as to why no one is in the videos hmmmmmm it's probably because they don't want to be in them maybe.
also a single modular woosh is more physically gratifying to hear than anything streaming on spotify, there, i said it.

Yep, flashing lights and plonk noises are cool. The modular community / communities seem pretty open to people who want to just have a fun toy to play with or a therapeutic hobby, with no real traditionally musidal intention in mind. Eurorack is still so niche, they’re probably keeping half the manufacturers going.

otoh posting a video to youtube with succulents and careful mise en scene does feel like a bit of a let down if you're making something with a modular synth and that's how you want to share it.

I think that is more for the guys taking apart Speak N Spells with soldering irons.

yeah but some of these ppl are evidently trying to make some kinda hustle from this + promote themselves/their other work. this 'ann annie' person has an instagram page, facebook page, bandcamp etc. + tour dates, appearances on compilations with other musicians and such. not or barely appearing onscreen i guess adds to some mystique + i guess with 'ann annie' there may be some who want to find out if the artist's gender is what's suggested by the stagename

the synths aren't the funny part of this it's the hygge goop dot com vibes, big step down from the IRCAM basement snaps of yore
― adam, Thursday, 14 March 2019 02:09 (five years ago) link
god i'm glad i don't have the energy or desire to snap a devastating, obscure referent around an aesthetic i've singled out for derision any more

that's a good one! i just made a tidy profit selling all my mannequins modules. currently jamming some marcus fisher who is for whatever reason the institutionally approved king of overexposed polaroid modular ambient, here's a performance with his cool gear and a tour of said gear:https://youtu.be/TSFMINIO7eA
