I think I am the opposite of asmr people. Extended action/fighting sequences in movies or live sporting events lull me and put me to sleep.

Yerac, Tuesday, 12 March 2019 21:17 (five years ago) link

Just jumping into the fray without having read the thread because I saw the subject title and this is one thing I take a great interest in.

I've been experiencing the ASMR phenomenon for the vast majority of my life; I definitely remember being seven years old and experiencing it from hearing book pages turned in an otherwise quiet library. It's the exact opposite of misophonia, where quiet/otherwise relaxing sounds irritate the listener, and is most probably associated with the phenomenon of synesthesia, which allows one to experience a stimulus via more than one sense, e.g. someone who can taste words and hear colors. Research is underway to explain the phenomenon but I know from my own experiences that I definitely feel the sensations from an ASMR (or similar) video as if someone was actually touching me.

Here are some of the ASMRtists I subscribe to:

1. Heather Feather ASMR (the first ASMR channel I subscribed to but who hasn't updated her channel in a long time)
2. WhispersRed ASMR (sort of an earth mother-y type but without the woo)
3. ASMR Angel (someone I could see myself hanging out with and the reason I got into "Would I Lie to You?", since she was Joe Lycett's guest on an episode of the program)
4. Sophie Michelle ASMR (a kid from my relatively superannuated position, an aspiring actress who's really into role plays)
5. Karuna Satori ASMR (a Pennsyl-tucky high school drop-out who does really entertaining videos)
6. CrinkleLuvin ASMR (perhaps the absolute best medical role play ASMRtist out there, very highly recommended)
7. ALBinWhisperland (slightly problematic past but seems to be fairly well-meaning these days)
8. Olivia's Kissper ASMR (gets a little too hippie-esque but has a good sense of humor)
9. Scottish Murmurs ASMR (well known in the community for her impressions of other ASMRtists; also provides something unique with her lilting Scottish accent)

I also greatly enjoy the occasional FairyChar ASMR video (and yes, I know that's not what she calls herself these days) but haven't watched her in awhile due to the fact I have all those other channels I subscribe to and will make occasional forays into other channels. I know there's a channel called HungryCakes that combines ASMR and mukbang (sp?) in a way that I find comforting and easy to take and I truly dislike the sounds made by impolite eaters, so unless you have the aforementioned misophonia she's perfectly safe to watch.

I'll get back to this thread after I've taken the time to read through it. I really hope none of you went down the stereotypical "ASMR = weird sex thing" route a lot of closed-minded folks utilize to hate on ASMR.

Ok wow, so apparently I posted on here before! My list above ^^ is the most recent list of ASMRtists I'm into, BTW. Also, the way I learned about ASMR was when I was watching Dr. Sandra Lee's early pimple popping videos (I have anxiety-based skin excoriation tendencies that are alleviated by watching them) and found them unexpectedly relaxing; when I read the comments section and saw the delicious sensations I'd been experiencing almost all my life referred to as "ASMR" it was like being given the key to a bottomless treasure chest, because I didn't know the phenomenon had a name. Once I found that out my YouTube watching habits changed drastically and I was able to get a lot calmer, though obviously I still struggle with my anxiety.

The first video Noodle Vague posted on November 13, 2018, is one of my favorite ASMR videos of all time. I don't even know how many times I've watched it because I've lost count, but it's been a great help to me during many moments of mental crisis/anguish. Emma is just brilliant at what she does. Similarly, this video helped cheer me up on the day of Trump's election and is actually the video that converted me into one of Charlotte's (ASMR Angel's) ardent fans:

(I'm sorry, I mean "inauguration", not "election". Emma's video is what helped soothe me after his election.)

The Colour of Spring (deethelurker), Thursday, 14 March 2019 02:46 (five years ago) link

(Also, whoops, it was November 13, 2016 that Noodle Vague posted that amazing video by Emma. I'm kinda hurrying right now and making all kinds of mistakes.)

Here's one of my favorite CrinkleLuvin ASMR medical role play videos:

oh man...this^ seems more about fetishisizing mental illness than exciting auditory nerves

oh man...this^ seems more about fetishisizing mental illness than exciting auditory nerves

How did you come to that conclusion? My thoughts were that since quite a few viewers would have had the experience of having to be admitted to a mental hospital, this would be catering to a part of their reality. I mean, I have some pretty bad mental illnesses myself (at times in the past to the point of incapacitation) and I didn't think there was any "fetishisizing" going on in the video.

The Colour of Spring (deethelurker), Thursday, 14 March 2019 17:31 (five years ago) link

I mean...."I need you to relax or I'm going to have sedate you again. Nurse, can you please help me restrain this patient?" "Right now your hands are in restraints, this is for your safety and own own..."

"If you fight me that's going to change the situation" (!!)

heinrich boll weevil (Hadrian VIII), Thursday, 14 March 2019 17:46 (five years ago) link

She's role playing as an intake nurse processing a highly agitated patient. Sometimes people who suffer from mental illness (and I am deeply fortunate not to have ever had it THAT bad) do things that put others or themselves at risk because that's how their illness manifests itself at times of high stress, such as having to be admitted to a mental hospital, and the staff at those hospitals have to prioritize safety over everything else. I would highly recommend you tracking down the 2001 HBO documentary about Bellevue ("Bellevue: Inside Out") to see what I'm talking about. Also, just because the viewer is taking on the role of this highly agitated patient doesn't mean it is assumed they've ever been one. I've viewed RPs where I've been asked to assume all kinds of improbable roles (e.g. a naïve individual seeking revenge against a wicked witch who took advantage of her) so I'm not sure what the objection is with this particular RP.

(FYI, it's very difficult to admit this but I might as well: I have been admitted to a mental hospital after a suicide attempt and I still don't see the problem with that particular video. This was a long time ago and I no longer experience suicidal ideations, FYI.)

The Colour of Spring (deethelurker), Thursday, 14 March 2019 18:52 (five years ago) link

Yeah I understand what goes on in psych wards. I’m just saying this appears to be role playing that has less to do w/ sensory response than it does some kind of psychological stimulus.

I’m a little skeptical that psych ward admission/intake + restraints are the sorts of memories someone with a history of hospitalization for acute anxiety or psychotic breaks would summon to feel better.

heinrich boll weevil (Hadrian VIII), Thursday, 14 March 2019 19:05 (five years ago) link

Anyway I am glad to hear you are no longer struggling with s.i. And if this does something for you in that regard that’s a good thing.

by the way i tried a pair of these today:
https://www.bose.co.uk/en_gb/products/frames.html

and listening to the above clip (Virtual barbershop) was FUCKING FREAKY. literally a second after i had hit play, even though i knew exactly what i was doing, and exactly what i was about to hear, i TURNED MY HEAD the fuck around to MAKE SURE that the sounds weren't being made by something actually in the room. the guys showing it to me explained that because with the glasses nothing is on your ears, the sounds of the real world aren't getting filtered out, so it's much easier to fool your brain that the recorded sounds are integrated into the actually-existing soundscape. it isn't always what you would want i guess - often it's great to block out the sound of public transportation, etc - but... dawg. and then of course it's a whole nother level with head tracking - you turn your head and the sound of the crackling fire (or whatever) appears to stay in the same place in relation to you...

feel ashamed by how much i want those

ogmor, Friday, 14 June 2019 17:47 (four years ago) link

Well, I know what I'm buying in a year or two when the prices get reduced/competing manufacturers put out less expensive versions of the product. Hell, I'm hoping Skullcandy comes out with an equivalent product because I find their items to be more within my price range and I already use their wireless headphones on the regular. Wow.

BTW, one of my good friends has a friend (whom I've befriended on FB) who's getting her own ASMR channel off the ground. Here's one of her videos:

I like Dr. Dmitri's eye, ear, and cranial nerve examination videos, they calm me down, especially the ear one (with headphones), I know they aren't real but they are soothing to me

Dan S, Saturday, 15 June 2019 03:24 (four years ago) link

It's def the mouth sounds that are the creepiest with ASMR vids.

Lil' Brexit (Tracer Hand), Saturday, 15 June 2019 19:59 (four years ago) link

Kim Richards = former child star turned "Real Housewives" reality TV star.
Lisa Rinna = former TV star turned "Real Housewives" reality TV star.
Eileen Davidson = IDK. Ok, apparently she was a former soap opera star turned "Real Housewives" reality TV star.

So it looks like this is a clip from a scene from whatever version of "Real Housewives" starred all three of those people. IDK and honestly couldn't care less now I know the probable source. Yeah, I'm an ASMR snob.

it's interesting how many of the best unintentional asmr videos feature older people, I wonder if asmr is in part a reaction against a trend towards higher energy & higher anxiety communication
