I have no idea how/why yahoo hasn’t been able to fix the thing.

Mad Piratical (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 18 March 2019 00:08 (five years ago) link

jesus. Half your team is relievers! They’re good ones at least, but I guess the yahoo auto brain saw no one was scooping them up (because we do sv+h I guess) and thought it was a great deal.
My other league is AL only, 10 team auction and whenever a team auto drafts, it’s a train wreck. Seems to have no awareness of how to properly fill out a team.

Mad Piratical (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 18 March 2019 00:16 (five years ago) link

Doesn't it just pick the highest ranked player in Yahoo's rankings, regardless of position?

NoTimeBeforeTime, Monday, 18 March 2019 04:02 (five years ago) link

That would explain it.

Mad Piratical (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 18 March 2019 04:33 (five years ago) link

drafted somewhat drunk and after another draft that has completely different player pools (lots of keepers but different keepers; no pitchers; points league; head to head) and tried just for fun a spreadsheet i found online. i was so busy with the stupid spreadsheet that i forgot to pay attnetion to my team, and about halfway through the draft i gave up on the sheet and just started winging it. i think my team is probably awful?

LuvWilTeheranUsApart returns for another year of mediocrity. Updated team name pending if I can think of a new one (usually I can't).

C Yasmani Grandal
1B Anthony Rizzo (the captain, my veteran keeper in his final year with the team)
2B Robinson Cano
3B Matt Chapman
SS Alex Bregman
OF Michael Brantley
OF Stephen Piscotty
OF Hunter Renfroe
Util Mat Olson

BN Mitch Moreland
BN Shin-soo Choo
BN Garrett Hampson
BN Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
BN Bo Bichette

SP Jacob de Grom
SP Trevor Bauer
SP Kyle Freeland
SP Mike Fiers

SP-RP Ross Stripling
SP-RP Brad Peacock

RP Adam Ottavino
RP Pedro Strop

The good:

I didn't draft too many pitchers like I do every year.
I'm set for 2021-2023 with a core of Bichette, Vlad, and Bregman.
The SS/3B controversy between Bregman and Chapman (Bregman had to make the switch to SS when I drafted Chapman) should push them both to excel, much like with Jeter and A-Rod.
I've been alternating three bad years with three good ones for a decade in this league which means I'm due this year.

The bad:

Relief core is weak.
OF is sketchy.
My starters are fragile and/or might get eaten by Coors Field.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Tuesday, 19 March 2019 09:52 (five years ago) link

you should change your name to the Oakland Athletics. because of all the Oakland Athletics.

Nth-consecutive autodraft (with certain jerks hastily filtered out beforehand). Roster tidying imminent.

Probably no point in keeping this guy much longer.

Tigers just announced that Michael Fulmer has been recommended for Tommy John surgery after undergoing MRI and consulting with Dr. James Andrews. He's seeking a third opinion.

It's all on Yahoo's FAQ about Advanced Metrics:

HR/FB%* - Hit Reach/Facebook - how many of their good hits end up as viral videos on social media platforms.
GB/FB* - Good bloopers/Facebook - how many of their mistakes end up as viral videos on social media platforms.
BABIP* - Bad Ass Boys In Pyjamas - how often they accidentally wear their PJs to the game.
ISO* - Isometric. Basically a measurement of how similar their height is to their width and depth. Bartolo Colon has a high ISO; Billy Hamilton, not so much.
CT%* - Chrono Trigger% - how many endings they have completed of Squaresoft's seminal 1995 Japanese RPG Chrono Trigger.
wOBA* - Short for Wobble. Basically, how awkward their running looks. Good for telling if they are likely to attempt to steal second.
wRAA* - How many near-homers they hit, only to get caught at the warning track and make you yell WRAAAAAA.
RC* - Royal Crown - How much non-Pepsi, non-Coke cola they drink.
TOB* - Time on base - how many hours, minutes, and seconds they spend either safe on a base, or defending a base. Tends to be higher for infielders.
GB* - Good Boys - how many good boys they know.
GB%* - Good Boy Percentage - how many good boys they know, divided by how many good and bad boys they know.
FB* - Future Bank - how much money they have yet to earn.
FB%* - Future Bank % - how much money they have yet to earn, dividing by past bank + future bank. Good indicator of how satisfied vs. hungry they are
OPS+* - Occurences playing Sheeran's "+" - how many times the player has spun the triple platinum Ed Sheeran album from 2011.
P/PA* - Pen-Pineapple-Apple. A measure of how many second pens they are missing.
GDPR* - God Damn Power Rifles. A measure of their Lootscore in popular video game Destiny 2.
SL* - Sleazy lines. You know when you see a guy get a single and talk to the first basemen? Sometimes they're gross about it.
WAR* - what is it good for? Absolutely nothing.

Mad Piratical (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 27 March 2019 18:58 (five years ago) link

the disparity between my team's offensive and pitching points is truly inspiring

https://imgur.com/pjTghwP

na (NA), Monday, 1 April 2019 15:07 (five years ago) link

I probably asked this before, but remind me why there are categories for both SLG & XBH? Seems like double dipping into the same skill set for its own sake.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Wednesday, 3 April 2019 02:24 (five years ago) link

(I guess I could do a regression and see how correlated they are, but I am not really feeling like doing yet another regression in my free time.)

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Wednesday, 3 April 2019 02:26 (five years ago) link

i think it's supposed to be double-dipping for power hitters (triple-dipping if you count homers), kinda like QS and W for SP?

they're not booing you, sir, they're shouting "Boot Edge Edge" (Will M.), Wednesday, 3 April 2019 14:27 (five years ago) link

Ah but QS and W are not correlated, as evidenced by Jake DeGrom last year (and my team, I was towards the top in QS but only midpack in W). QS is kind of an equalizer for good pitchers on low-scoring teams or with bad luck (or both, eg: DeGrom). Kind of a way to hack advanced stats using traditional stats.

I'll do a regression on SLG & XBH just to make my point. It seems to be pretty much double-counting power, with a little bit of a correlation with NSB.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Wednesday, 3 April 2019 16:08 (five years ago) link

Yeah, having HR and SLG and XBH seems way too power-shifted, this isn't 1996-2002 anymore. Perhaps chicks dig WAR these days.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Wednesday, 3 April 2019 16:10 (five years ago) link

we don't include defense at all right now, right? WAR would be at least a step towards that

na (NA), Wednesday, 3 April 2019 16:16 (five years ago) link

but more innings means higher likelihood of wins, no? and also qs is literally about more innings

i mean unless we have RPs out here throwing 160 innings a season

they're not booing you, sir, they're shouting "Boot Edge Edge" (Will M.), Wednesday, 3 April 2019 17:23 (five years ago) link

Exactly... Tampa's "openers" always get denied QS due to archaic scoresheet criteria.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Wednesday, 3 April 2019 17:27 (five years ago) link

I mean, not the openers, but the followers who pitch the bulk of the game.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Wednesday, 3 April 2019 17:27 (five years ago) link
