Camper Van Beethoven's cover of "Wasted" made the noms but not the Black Flag original >:(

ebro the letter (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 11 March 2019 07:33 (five years ago) link

lol this Earlimart song is a remix of a Blur instrumental

imago, Monday, 11 March 2019 10:54 (five years ago) link

Loved the Family Fodder track just before it though!

imago, Monday, 11 March 2019 10:56 (five years ago) link

I made a playlist of a certain subset of all the nominations, not stanning for any of them just a bit of fun, best effect if you skip each song after 1-2 seconds:

https://open.spotify.com/user/ledge/playlist/1uMkeSUpwlJHLzx1QkpyN9?si=LJOVMgCxQQOs0273IMaVkA

what if bod was one of us (ledge), Monday, 11 March 2019 11:11 (five years ago) link

aka the Gerogerigegege playlist lol

imago, Monday, 11 March 2019 11:14 (five years ago) link

Karl you must have missed the last batch of corrections I made in the nominations thread. One song is on there twice and I mentioned 'the' White Stripes and other splits with 'the'.

٩༼ º෴º ༽۶ (FlopsyDuck), Monday, 11 March 2019 12:57 (five years ago) link

xp to imago,
I didn't know that about Earlimart (a band I don't really care much about despite nominating that song). Maybe you are mistaken?
Family Fodder is one of my all time favorite bands.

٩༼ º෴º ༽۶ (FlopsyDuck), Monday, 11 March 2019 13:05 (five years ago) link

I am not mistaken. But it's a nice remix

imago, Monday, 11 March 2019 13:09 (five years ago) link

hmm. now I'm thinking I was mistaken and it's just the same (unusual) instrument

imago, Monday, 11 March 2019 13:12 (five years ago) link

ok, I approve of the Earlimart then :D

imago, Monday, 11 March 2019 13:12 (five years ago) link

Not well known (the song, not the band).

What's the Use (Pretty Things, 1970)

Possibly a belated answer-song to "She's Leaving Home."

clemenza, Monday, 11 March 2019 13:14 (five years ago) link

There definitely are some big similarities there imago. The thing that most intrigues me about the Earlimart song is when it hangs on the minor piano notes (from about 1:06 - 1:22) instead of finishing the sequence.

And since KM took the trouble to fix up the spelling, some great doo-wop from 1959 (of admittedly dubious sensitivity):

Ching a Long (Accents, 1959)

Contrary to the credits on the clip, it is "Ching a Long," not "Ching a Ling" (a point raised in the comments section). Seems to be listed as "Ching a Ling" all over the internet, but:

I've just realised that I've forgotten to nominate something. Are we accepting write-ins?

imago, Monday, 11 March 2019 13:33 (five years ago) link

u kidding m8

Uptown VONC (Le Bateau Ivre), Monday, 11 March 2019 13:34 (five years ago) link

it's this haha a neural network wrote a christmas song

imago, Monday, 11 March 2019 13:35 (five years ago) link

lol. it's good but not quite as good to further toy with KM's sanity imo

Uptown VONC (Le Bateau Ivre), Monday, 11 March 2019 13:36 (five years ago) link

ok fine, i won't mention it again. but it's going on my ballot :D

imago, Monday, 11 March 2019 13:41 (five years ago) link

I can proudly declare it's right there on the noms list too!

Uptown VONC (Le Bateau Ivre), Monday, 11 March 2019 13:42 (five years ago) link

For those that like their songs *really* short, here's a playlist I made of songs that are all 7 seconds or less

https://open.spotify.com/user/1000timesyes/playlist/3n34eIuHsO4ZARoSYymkwL?si=hZ1Gn9dsS02tj5Jkmw3pCw

59 songs in 5 min, 13 seconds

Also, let me know if there's any good ones (0:07 or less) on Spotify that I'm missing!

ebro the letter (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 11 March 2019 17:11 (five years ago) link

lol, my immediate thought was "death metal and tmbg" and i was not disappointed

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Monday, 11 March 2019 18:07 (five years ago) link

ebro the letter (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 11 March 2019 18:10 (five years ago) link

I was looking forward to exchanges like that in this thread <3

but i'm there are fuckups (Karl Malone), Monday, 11 March 2019 18:16 (five years ago) link

Thanks for your work on this Karl, still going through the playlist but looking forward to putting a ballot together.

Would like to put a word in for one of my non-Spotify playlist nominations:

Idk if you're allowed to campaign for your own nominations or if it's in bad taste but then again I am a vulgar, vulgar man, a real nouveau riche ilx type shithead, so I am gonna do it anyway and beg for your forgiveness later, MAYBE.

Brian Eno - The Microsoft Sound (0:06) - Just wanted to remind you all this is available to put on your ballot. IT'S REAL GOOD, Y'ALL!
Danny Elfman - The Simpsons Main Theme (1:39) - This too. It's fine? I don't even know if I'll vote for it, but it is iconic.
AFI - Hearts Frozen Solid, Thawed Once More by the Spring of Rage, Despair, and Hopelessness (0:32) - A real test of Poe's law here (or whatever the... not internet? equivalent? of poe's law? is?), I can't tell if this is just the most "angry pop punk" song ever or a send-up of the genre. Either way, 30 seconds of Davey Havoc screaming I WILL DIE SCREAMING is a joy, and this is probably the only AFI song I have ever liked. Plus, there has to be at least one representative from Fat Wreck's "short music for short people," an album of 100 thirty-second songs, right?
Project X - Straight Edge Revenge (1:20) - Yes, yes, you should vote for the Minor Threat song, blah blah blah, YAWN, but, like, this is the best update to the "short song about not doing drugs hardcore" microgenre ever. I'M AS STRAIGHT! AS THE LINE! THAT YOU SNORT UP YOUR NOSE! hahaha. Come on. vote for it
Mitski - Old Friend (1:53) - maybe my fave short song by my fave artist of the decade so you know i'll stan for it. with 50 spots i'm still worried i'll vote for her 5 times? but if someone said "one vote per artist" it's this. (or maybe my body's made of crushed little stars. shit. tough pick)

And some I didn't nominate, because, that's the CLASSY MOVE

Guayaba - Bye Bich --- daaaaaaaaamn one of the (very) few songs that I hit while shuffling the spotify and went WAIT WHAT? WHAT IS THIS. it is very good
Farrah Abraham - The Sunshine State --- NOBODY TOLD ME SHE IS A SECRET GENIUS? help this is amazing
Boards of Canada - .......all of it? ugh how am I supposed to pick from these?

they're not booing you, sir, they're shouting "Boo'd Up" (Will M.), Monday, 11 March 2019 18:41 (five years ago) link

If it helps you decide, I am going to be giving My Body's Made Of Crushed Little Stars a LOT of points

imago, Monday, 11 March 2019 18:45 (five years ago) link

and yeah the Farrah Abraham thing is glorious haha

imago, Monday, 11 March 2019 18:45 (five years ago) link

i'm planning on voting for crushed little stars too

KILL MEEE IN JERUUUSALEM

Neus Anneus (voodoo chili), Monday, 11 March 2019 18:53 (five years ago) link

one per artist is only like a code of honour thing tho, right? bc like... yeah i'm not gonna LIE and pretend i don't love both of those songs

they're not booing you, sir, they're shouting "Boo'd Up" (Will M.), Monday, 11 March 2019 18:53 (five years ago) link

imo two is fine and three is a bit much but probably tolerable

PPL+AI=NS (imago), Monday, 11 March 2019 18:55 (five years ago) link

My ballot has five Minutemen songs right now

ebro the letter (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 11 March 2019 18:59 (five years ago) link

Also, we should have let whoever nominate the whole Circle Jerks album because "World Up My Ass" is not on the list

ebro the letter (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 11 March 2019 19:00 (five years ago) link

yeah there's no limit, but i'm gonna limit myself to one artist per song so i can spread the wealth a bit and go a little bit less insane when choosing and ordering my ballot

Neus Anneus (voodoo chili), Monday, 11 March 2019 19:05 (five years ago) link

vote for the songs you like best imo

ebro the letter (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 11 March 2019 19:36 (five years ago) link

There's 3 different versions of the theme to 'Stingray', will they be collated seperately or together? i.e. does it matter which version I vote for?

Dan Worsley, Monday, 11 March 2019 19:37 (five years ago) link

I’m not familiar with the theme (and at work so I can’t listen), but if they sound pretty similar I will collate is there are votes for separate versions

but i'm there are fuckups (Karl Malone), Monday, 11 March 2019 19:39 (five years ago) link

if

but i'm there are fuckups (Karl Malone), Monday, 11 March 2019 19:40 (five years ago) link

Not sure if I'll vote for it, but definitely under consideration.

Dan Worsley, Monday, 11 March 2019 19:44 (five years ago) link

Vote for 'UFO' instead, Dan :)

Jeff W, Monday, 11 March 2019 19:51 (five years ago) link

Jesus, that was exhausting.
There was definitely something liberating about comparing the relative merits of C86 songs, hardcore, first-wave rock 'n roll classics, and incidental filler.
Anyway, ballot submitted.

enochroot, Monday, 11 March 2019 20:53 (five years ago) link

Attention Trump conspiracy hysterics: I voted twice.

(Don't worry, KM--the second ballot catches one of the subcategories I missed on the first one. The rest is blank.)

How ironic that a song called Martin Scorcese is brief

✖✖✖ (Moka), Tuesday, 12 March 2019 05:45 (five years ago) link

Every song: “What song is this?”
“Guided by Voices again”
“Put it on the list”.

I guess I didn’t realise they were actually quite good.

alrakis morissette (tangenttangent), Tuesday, 12 March 2019 06:05 (five years ago) link

From my noms I obviously want to campaign for all of them but I’ll settle for 3 that I’d specially recommend:

Tenorio Jr - Nebulosa

This is from the early 60’s but actually sounds like it is some instrumental hip hop song by nujabes or someone of that ilk. Which is to say it sounds decades ahead of its time. Short piece but every musician in it is so good and the song has such an energetic pace it feels like it’s much longer.

Buddy Holly - Slippin n Slidin (fast version)

This stripped down version is not only my favorite version of the song, it might be my favorite Buddy Holly song. I love his voice in this unadorned state. The whole apartment tapes are really good and better than the overdubs they made with them imho.

Storey Sisters - Bad Motorcycle

Because it’s awesome and deserves a top 20 spot in this poll.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Tuesday, 12 March 2019 06:24 (five years ago) link

Don't know if I'll be able to submit a ballot, but wanted to drop in to say that this playlist is the best thing ever
