haha, i sometimes run some browsers in a sandbox, so
it depends where i'm logged in from. so it also makes it
easier to read what i'm writing. i know it messes things up
on zing. sorry for that.

I joined just about when you'd get told off for starting a thread question without setting a category

correctly: the establishment of the ilx categories was the only good day's work i ever did here or anywhere, all lost now of course and that's good too

mark s, Friday, 8 March 2019 22:00 (five years ago) link

Which ilx poster has stepped away from the keyboard for a moment and gone on to greatest real-world success/notability (however subjectively that is measured) ?

For all the answers to this, nobody mentioned Callum?

emil.y, Friday, 8 March 2019 22:39 (five years ago) link

I mean, he's not the most famous ex-ilx0r, but for a persistently stupid troll he did pretty well for himself.

emil.y, Friday, 8 March 2019 22:40 (five years ago) link

(shit, Calum with only one 'l', sorry)

slightly aghast at the idea wins of all ppl might be the one taken in by a board joke

I too was briefly unnerved by this possibility

I would have mentioned Cal, but where is he now?

Mark G, Friday, 8 March 2019 22:49 (five years ago) link

where he is is lookable uppable

Mark G, Friday, 8 March 2019 22:52 (five years ago) link

i mean i am snarking at yr laziness a bit but only bcz i only right now just looked him up after emil.y's post and there he is, bibliography and filmography and everything

mark s, Friday, 8 March 2019 22:54 (five years ago) link

Yeah, but then.. Controversial Colin dot dot

Mark G, Friday, 8 March 2019 22:56 (five years ago) link

I just Googled Calum and HOLY MOTHER OF FUCK. Also, I'm friends (well, acquaintances at the very least) with someone who's pretty well known in the horror community and the idea of the two of them crossing paths is beyond bonkers to me. Part of me wants to warn said friend/acquaintance about this guy.

i believe we have more notable ilxors than that, ive never paid for a book by calum

~mine own~ bitcoin (darraghmac), Friday, 8 March 2019 23:41 (five years ago) link

Dunno how notable it is, but Al Ewing (Tom's brother, I forgot what his ILX handle was) went to become a prolific writer for Marvel Comics. His comics are really good too!

Tuomas, Saturday, 9 March 2019 00:15 (five years ago) link

I believe his ilx handle was “Al Ewing”

I have a friend who has amicably crossed paths with him online as she's big into both k-pop and horror - I told her he was a notable troll on ilx but mostly I just giggled to myself while mumbling about Nicky Wire in a banana suit.

Didn’t ta-nehisi coates post here a couple of times, or is that an ilx joke I took at face value

Yes, he posted in this 2003 thread about an article he wrote:
Village Voice/DC C. Paper writer on "vocal complexity" in rap & Prefuse 73 vs. Kogan, Frere-Jones take on production

jaymc, Saturday, 9 March 2019 04:16 (five years ago) link

How famous would someone have to be for ILX posts to come back and haunt their career?

٩༼ º෴º ༽۶ (FlopsyDuck), Saturday, 9 March 2019 04:19 (five years ago) link

xp I don't think he stuck around. Neither did Saul Williams.

jaymc, Saturday, 9 March 2019 04:20 (five years ago) link

iirc in 2003 you could just post on ilx without creating an account of any kind so ta-nehisi coates was more like a guy replying to a comment thread than "an ILXor"

Just realized that that TNC thread also features Neil Drumming, who is now a producer for This American Life and did a segment a few years ago about his friendship with TNC.

Um, I am pretty sure I sent the thread to he and City Paper writer Neil Drumming who both posted.

omar little, Saturday, 9 March 2019 04:31 (five years ago) link

anyway, the most famous ILXor is clearly adamrl (nordicskilla)

jaymc, Saturday, 9 March 2019 04:32 (five years ago) link

uhh i thought adamrl was like a hot sweater vested film type, not a hot rock star.

macropuente (map), Saturday, 9 March 2019 06:15 (five years ago) link

he was wearing the sweater vest before he went onstage

but there were liability issues with the fire insurance

sorry, one more... what was the name of that smug guy with glasses that posted here? i think he was a music writer. the sweater vest reminded me.

From my dealings with 'the horror community' on Facebook, Calum is as deeply divisive a figure within that as he was on ILX. His company, 88 films, put out some excellent martial art blu-rays that I will continue to buy in Fopp at £6 a pop.

AFAIK, he also remains the only person to threaten ILX (!) with legal action.

smug guy with glasses doesn’t exactly narrow it down tbf but are you thinking of matth3w p3rp3tua aka fluxblog

Strickler is the richest former ILXor, I would guess.

d00mie also threatened ilx with the law

(after alan mcgee's moral rectitude was questioned in a possibly over-forthright way)

mark s, Saturday, 9 March 2019 11:33 (five years ago) link

As one of the few ILXors I've known irl, I can confirm that matty perpz is chill.
