I hereby de-nominate my last five nominations (posted after Karl announced a final ten) but ONLY for Stevie D. They're all yours. Of course as a Dandies and Swirlies (I assume) fan you might opt to re-nominate a couple of 'em idk

Hey guys, this is Karl’s friend, logged into his account. He got fired because of this poll, earlier today, and he asked me to come on here and ask you all to send him money to cover his costs while he looks for a new one. He’s going to be busy out looking for a job for the next few weeks but you can just send the money to me and I will pass it onto him, as I see him just about every night.

Not sure if it makes a difference but Discogs has Elvis Costello & the Attractions - No Action at 1:58 on the old Rykodisc reissue CD (and 1:57 on the original LP). This would be in my top 10.

*wakes up covered in mud and dirty band-aids*

ok, thanks for all of the nominations list-cleaning! i made all of the little adjustments everyone mentioned above. removing all the doubles opened up several more spots, so i was able to almost all of the last wave of nominations to bring the total to the very satisfying and relevant number of 2019 songs. these were the songs i added:

Bill Wurtz - Alphabet Shuffle - 1:00
The Chap - Partly People - 1:56
The Dandy Warhols - The Dandy Warhols Love Almost Everyone - 1:54
Swirlies - No Identifier - 1:45
Teenage Fanclub - Hardcore / Ballad - 1:50
Phoenix - School's Rules - 1:32
Working for a Nuclear Free City - Euphone - 1:47
Depeche Mode - Sometimes - 1:54
Avi Buffalo - Two Cherished Understandings - 1:42
Midnight Oil - Bakerman - 0:56
Elvis Costello & the Attractions - No Action - 1:58 (this is above 2:00 on all versions on spotify, so i left it off there. but it's 1:58 on discogs)
Super Furry Animals - Do or Die - 1:59
Georgia Island Sea Singers - Hop Along, Let's Get Her - 1:04
Alameda Riddlle - My Little Rooster - 1:49
Hobart Smith - Last Chance - 1:30
Thingy - Drugs - 1:36
The Pipettes - It Hurts To See You Dance So Well - 1:53

The Pipettes one is interesting - on Spotify it's 2:09, and it's the version on We Are the Pipettes. It's legitimately that long. But I looked it up on Youtube and elsewhere, and the album version is indeed shorter, at 1:53. So i'm guessing they put a slightly different/longer version on the U.S. version of the album? at any rate, i've added it to the nominations list, but not the spotify playlist.

i have the remaining items before i can launch the voting/campaign thread later today:

- finalize points/tiers system (i will try to provide several options, including ranked and unranked ballots, and a few varieties of tiers for people who would rather do it that way
- set up voting system
- register a gmail account

whoops, one more addition (Alan Lomax - All The Pretty Little Horses 1:49)
(i realized one of nominees in the list was the beautiful "Artist - Track - Length", which is unfortunately ineligible for this poll. so i squeezed in one more late nom from fionnland)

getting closer, just preparing the google forms and stuff

re: the Pipettes, there are two versions of We Are the Pipettes, the (original) UK version and the US version, and they each have different arrangements.

And it's annoying that the obviously superior UK version isn't on US Spotify, but that would be the one we'd be voting on.

Gaseous Clay (Leee), Saturday, 9 March 2019 22:25 (five years ago) link

Which (UK) TV show was Alan Parson Project's 'Sirius' used in? It's been bugging me all evening. Maybe it was just continuity music during snooker coverage in the late 80s or something.

nashwan, Saturday, 9 March 2019 22:27 (five years ago) link

okeydoke, after some messing around i have a proposed points system. there will be up to 50 votes on each ballot.

there will be three voting options:

1-50 ranked
Rank, Points
01 500
02 475
03 450
04 425
05 400
06 375
07 350
08 330
09 310
10 290
11 272
12 255
13 240
14 230
15 220
16 210
17 202
18 197
19 192
20 187
21 182
22 177
23 172
24 168
25 164
26 160
27 155
28 151
29 147
30 144
31 142
32 139
33 136
34 134
35 131
36 128
37 125
38 122
39 118
40 115
41 112
42 109
43 106
44 103
45 100
46 97
47 94
48 90
49 86
50 83

this adds up to the pleasing total of 10,000 points. don't worry, when we do the final rollout i will multiply everything by a tiny number so that we can have pleasingly tiny results.

1-50 ranked
in an unranked ballot, every song receives 200 points, for a total of 10,000 points. wow, that's pleasing!

mixed/tiers ballot
based off of fionnland's suggestion above, but with slightly altered numbers so that everything adds up to 10,000 at the end. voters can submit a ranked 1-20 ballot, then three tiers from 21-30, 31-40, and 41-50.

01 500
02 475
03 450
04 425
05 400
06 375
07 350
08 330
09 310
10 290
11 272
12 255
13 240
14 230
15 220
16 210
17 202
18 197
19 192
20 187

21 - 30: 162 points each
31 - 40: 129 points each
41 - 50: 98 points each

all of that adds up to 10,000 points as well.

-----

in addition, there will be three side polls:
1) top 5 songs under 30 seconds (can include songs voted for as part of the regular poll too, of course)
2) your favorite ever <2 minutes artist/band
3) top 5 songs that aren't in the nominations but you believe are actually less than 2 minutes (meant to capture songs excluded from this song on a technicality, because spotify said it was over 2 but actually it's really not, or because it wasn't nominated, etc)

thank you very much flopsyducky! especially with the missing/duplicated songs. i tried my best to be careful as i entered them, but i knew there would be some mistakes. very glad to have someone help me catch them.

with the duplicate deletions and additions of missing songs + the last few fionnland nominations i didn't add earlier, we're still at 2019

but i'm there are fuckups (Karl Malone), Sunday, 10 March 2019 03:58 (five years ago) link

I have such a hard time micro-ranking things like this--I find general groupings much easier. Also, the 500-98 spread from #1 to #50 is too steep for me; I won't like my #1 that much more than my #50.

Can I use this instead?

#1-10 - 400 points each (= 4,000)
#11-25 - 200 points each (= 3,000)
#26-50 - 120 points each (= 3,000)

10,000 points.

clemenza, Sunday, 10 March 2019 04:36 (five years ago) link

i guess i can amend the google form to add "the clemenza option", as you outlined. just curious, though - you spread from 500 to 98 points is too much for you (a little over 5x the points for #1 vs #50). but the spread from 400 points to 120 points (3.3x the points for #1 vs #50) is acceptable?

but i'm there are fuckups (Karl Malone), Sunday, 10 March 2019 04:41 (five years ago) link

Not perfect, but closer.

clemenza, Sunday, 10 March 2019 04:42 (five years ago) link

since i'm making an entirely different option just for you, what would be perfect?

but i'm there are fuckups (Karl Malone), Sunday, 10 March 2019 04:45 (five years ago) link

The one above is perfect because it's so easy. But you could, if you want, set it up so "The Clemenza Option" is in flashing neon colours.

clemenza, Sunday, 10 March 2019 04:47 (five years ago) link

(Seriously, though--thanks.)

clemenza, Sunday, 10 March 2019 04:48 (five years ago) link

no really, i'm going to add a separate option that you can use (and others will be welcome to use it too), so if you want the spread a little closer just let me know! there's no real "easier" or "harder" here, they all involve adding a new section on a google form

but i'm there are fuckups (Karl Malone), Sunday, 10 March 2019 04:48 (five years ago) link

This is all terribly exciting. Thanks for your toil, KM.

I like how "Lightworks" appears here in three variations: the original, J-Dilla's appropriation and then MF DOOM rapping over the latter.

A couple of other things: entries for Mekons + The Mekons and Germs + The Germs (Perhaps not terribly important except that I panicked thinking "Lexicon Devil" and "Never Been in a Riot" had been eliminated.)

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Sunday, 10 March 2019 04:51 (five years ago) link

My estimate would be that I like my #1, I don't know, maybe twice as much as my #50? So if I changed the top 10 to 300 points, that'd be 3,000, and the bottom 25 to 150, that'd be 3,750, leaving 3,250 for the middle 15, which works out to...a decimal. So just leave it like it is--the numbers are easy to work with.

clemenza, Sunday, 10 March 2019 04:53 (five years ago) link

nice, thanks! I should have done a better job checking the The's section - but I ended up moving straight on to the rest of the prep work. Thanks for the fixes.

btw, for those who are up late on a Saturday night (or up super early on a Sunday morning): how long should the voting period be? 3 weeks sound about right (ballots due by the end of Sunday, March 31st)?

I know it's a ton of songs so we need a decent amount of time, but I don't want to do one of those interminable polls that go on and on (even this nominations process took forever, i thought)

but i'm there are fuckups (Karl Malone), Sunday, 10 March 2019 04:56 (five years ago) link

xpost

but i'm there are fuckups (Karl Malone), Sunday, 10 March 2019 04:56 (five years ago) link

clemenza, for your option how about:

1-10: 300 points (3,000)
11-25: 217 points (3,255)
26-49: 150 points (3,600)
50: 145 points (145)

it's a ridiculous compromise: you know you want to agree to this

but i'm there are fuckups (Karl Malone), Sunday, 10 March 2019 05:00 (five years ago) link

or if not, i'll just go with your option you mentioned above. but it's really not a big deal (on my end) to do the one i just posted, and then the spread would be a lot closer. others might like that too, and also they might appreciate your option because it's entirely made up of tiers
