There are a bunch of people on FB from ILX that I would like to friend but think it would through them off because they wouldn't know who I was. What to do?

I think a poke to a non-friend allows them to see your profile for a limited period ("yes, it is me - I sat next to you in Geography in 1983 and now I like embroidery and Wolf Eyes"); if they poke you back you can see their profile. From such jabbing beautiful "friend"ships are rekindled. Any subsequent pokes are for laffs.

So far I only have ILX0rs I've actually met in IRL as friends, but that's not a conscious decision on my part. I don't think I've actually added any ILX0rs yet anyway, they've added me. I was the same as you, wasn't sure if I should or not!

xpost the pokes I was talking about were from people who are already friends, so it wasn't to add me or anything, that's why I wondered what it was for.

i got poked, poked them back, never heard back from them again. which is how i like it. usually the etiquette seems to be that you get poked, then add the person.

i know i asked to join the ILX group. i think nath allowed me in. can't remember, and can't check 'cos am at work using steam-powered browser of all fucking doom.

can't say the groups/associated discussions do much for me, really. two weeks in (is it? i think) and i'm still just enjoying the fact that a) it's a lazy-ass way to keep in touch with dudes around the globe, and b) the fact that a (second) GRATE LONG-LOST FRIEND popped up the other day, with typical insouciance, and it made my fucking month to hear from him. srsly: this is the dude who got me into SO MUCH music when i was 15/16; the last time i saw him, we were in a dodgy club back home and someone was dropping a bottle on his head. i've tried to get in touch with him a couple of times; having him suddenly appear from nowhere and add me as a friend was glorious.

so yeh, i still like this thing. how long before the backlash?

What is the point of poking people? I don't want to poke any of my friends, particularly, but I might if I knew the point of it.

I think it's just a way to say hi without having to think of a specific message to send.

I got a notification with a picture of a finger on it to say that Ailsa had poked me, and asking me if I wanted to poke her back. But our math teacher is, like, a real hardass? So I decided not to.
